She had originally planned to keep Wyatt Jacobs alive until Liam Grant returned, hoping she could use him to eliminate Wyatt.
But as things stood, Wyatt Jacobs was a liability.
She hadnāt expected Wyatt Jacobs to know about the "City of Zombie" in Keldorn.
Fortunately, he hadnāt revealed it to anyone yet.
Early morning.
A new figure appeared in the small courtyard, but it was one no one could see.
Treasureās ears perked up, and it stood.
It sniffed a familiar scent, tilting its head in confusion.
Then, as if it understood something, it wagged its tail and returned to its doghouse...
ćInside the Enforcement Bureau.ć
A staff member pushed a food cart, making their usual delivery rounds.
Nina Jacobs, still invisible, stood by a door.
As the staff member delivered the meal, she dripped a few drops of a potion into a bowl of porridge...
...
That morning, the treatment room at the base hospital was bustling with activity.
Healers were taking turns treating a poisoned inmate.
But the numbers on the monitor were far from encouraging.
"His condition is still deteriorating. The poison is too potent; the healing technique is most likely useless."
A male doctor in a white coat said, shaking his head.
"Doctor Lynch, is there really no other way?"
"Heās still awaiting trial. Canāt you just keep him alive for a few more days?"
York was already drenched in sweat.
An inmate awaiting trial had been poisoned. This was the Enforcement Bureauās problem.
"Heās already confessed and signed the papers anyway. Itāll be fine, right?"
Sherry Renner said reassuringly from the side.
"Just be quiet!"
"Iām just asking if he can be kept alive for a few more days!"
York asked again, his voice strained with anxiety.
The doctor shook his head. "Weāve tried everything. Iām very sorry."
"Nina! Youāre here."
Seeing her arrive, Sherry Renner quickly waved her over.
Nina Jacobs nodded. "How is he?"
Someone from the Enforcement Bureau had just notified her to come to the hospital. They said Wyatt Jacobs wasnāt going to make it and wanted to see her one last time.
In truth, Nina Jacobs hadnāt wanted to come.
She had been using her Five Senses Enhancement to monitor the situation from a floor above.
She already knew Wyatt Jacobs was beyond saving.
It was the same poison she had taken from the Ice Ability User, Dariel Young, during the mission to rescue Holden Shaw.
She hadnāt been sure of the poisonās efficacy and had planned to return to finish the job after her Invisibility Potion wore off.
But now, it seemed that wouldnāt be necessary.
"Sigh... The doctor says heās not going to make it,"
Sherry Renner replied, shaking her head.
"Itās you?"
The doctor in the white coat removed his mask, his face lighting up with pleasant surprise as he looked at Nina Jacobs.
"Youāre... Doctor Lynch?"
Nina Jacobs almost didnāt recognize him.
Back in Hawthorne Village in City J, it was Easton Lynch who had treated Wayne Warner and prescribed two types of medicine for them.
"You two know each other?"
Sherry Renner asked curiously.
"Yes. Miss Jacobs saved me and the people I was traveling with back then. She saved all of us,"
Easton Lynch replied.
"So, this Miss Jacobs is quite the good Samaritan."
A voice spoke up from behind them.
Nina Jacobsās heart skipped a beat. āItās Heath Chandler.ā
āWhy is he here?ā
Though she was worried, Nina Jacobs composed her features into a suitable expression.
"And you are?"
She looked at Heath Chandler. Several others stood behind him.
Including Adrian Shaw.
"He is Ian Chandlerās father, Heath Chandler."
"We came to check on Wyatt Jacobsās condition,"
Adrian Shaw explained.
"Mr. Chandler, you know my cousin?" Nina asked deliberately.
"I wouldnāt say I know him. Iām just curious as to why he was poisoned."
"The last person to see him yesterday was you, wasnāt it?"
Heath Chandler had originally planned to visit Wyatt Jacobs in a couple of days.
He hadnāt expected Wyatt Jacobs to be poisoned so soon after his arrival.
According to his information, the last person to see Wyatt Jacobs before the incident was Nina Jacobs.
Heath Chandler didnāt know Nina Jacobs, but when he voiced his suspicion, he found everyone around him giving him strange looks.
"Sir, Miss Jacobs risked her life to save over a hundred of us."
"Iām certain she would never do something like this!"
Easton Lynch said.
Nina Jacobs hadnāt just saved them; she had also left them with ample supplies and even told them the way to a shelter.
āHow could such a kind person possibly poison someone?ā
"Then I can vouch for Nina, too."
"She saved my life as well,"
Sherry Renner chimed in.
"Ahem, Mr. Chandler, please donāt take this the wrong way,"
"but actually..."
Adrian Shaw wanted to say that Nina had saved his life, too, as well as Ian Chandlerās.
But Nina Jacobs didnāt let him continue.
"I did see him yesterday."
"I am willing to cooperate with any investigation,"
Nina Jacobs said, her expression unchanging.
"Nina, the patient is fading fast! He said he wants to see you!"
A nurse, Josie Joyce, ran out, her face etched with anxiety.
Most of Heath Chandlerās suspicions had already dissipated.
He had no evidence to begin with.
"Go on and see him."
He followed behind Nina Jacobs.
Seeing this, Nina Jacobs simply nodded.
Inside the room, Wyatt Jacobsās face was ashen. The poison had already seeped into his vital organs.
But when he saw the people behind Nina Jacobs, he forced out the words:
"Get out... I only want to see her."
"Letās go."
Heath Chandler sighed.
In his eyes, there was no way Nina Jacobs could be the one who poisoned him.
Nina Jacobs frowned as she looked at Wyatt Jacobs.
āDoes he suspect me?ā
But in the next moment, Wyatt Jacobs spoke.
"Iām sorry, Nina. Iām so sorry..."
Seeing Ninaās uncomprehending gaze, Wyatt Jacobs continued,
"I should have saved you back then."
"You saved me so many times..."
"In this world, only you... COUGH, COUGH... have ever treated me with genuine kindness."
Wyatt Jacobs coughed up a mouthful of dark blood, and his face grew even paler.
"Thatās right... you donāt know anything at all."
"Itās better this way. Much better."
"Nina, I heard you have a new little sister. Congratulations..."
"I actually had a gift prepared for you..."
"Oh, right, Nina. Tell that Shaw guy... not to trust Liam Grant too much."
"Heās an incredibly ambitious, yet... yet incompetent fool."
"He couldnāt succeed in our last life, and he wonāt succeed in this one either, hehehe..."
"Heāll definitely get his... his just desserts..."
Wyatt Jacobs suddenly began to gasp, struggling for breath.
"You donāt suspect who poisoned you?"
Nina asked.
āIs he repenting to me?ā
She had come here fully prepared for him to expose her.
She never expected to hear this instead.
"Heh... Who cares."
Wyatt Jacobs let out a self-deprecating laugh.
He couldnāt be bothered to think about it anymore.
"Nina, you have to live on, no matter what."
"Donāt trust... donāt trust anyone ever again..."
The monitor beside the bed let out a long, piercing wail.
When the others rushed in, they found that Wyatt Jacobs was already gone.
Nina Jacobs sat beside him, completely still.
"Nina, are you okay?"
Sherry Renner couldnāt help but ask softly.
For some reason, she felt there was something strange about the sight of Ninaās back.
"Donāt bother her right now. No matter what kind of person Wyatt Jacobs was,"
"they were still family."
Daniel Hale and Leo Hale had also arrived.
"Iām fine."
Nina Jacobs stood up, her expression as impassive as ever.
āShe just hadnāt expected it. Even in death, Wyatt Jacobs hadnāt suspected her.ā
āIt left her feeling momentarily unsettled.ā
"Nina, I brought you some red bean cakes and peach juice."
Outside the door, Ian Chandler and the others were already waiting.
Besides Ian Chandler, Chase Gallagher and Jessica Vance were there as well.
Even Chester Pearson was there.
"You guys..."
Nina Jacobs was taken aback for a moment, and then the trace of turmoil in her heart vanished.
