"How do you know about him?"
A flash of anger crossed Mordecai Quinnâs eyes at the mention of Sean Joyce.
"I heard people at the base talking about him yesterday,"
Nina Jacobs replied.
Mordecai Quinn took a deep breath. "Heâs the one who took the baseâs supplies. He was also the person I trusted most."
Before Sean Joyce disappeared, many people saw him leave the base alone.
He was never seen again after that.
"I see."
By now, Nina Jacobs had already retreated three kilometers away with the others.
She remembered what Zachary Ziegler had said when she used her Five Senses Enhancement: Sean Joyce was the one who blew up this road.
âWhy would Sean Joyce come here and destroy the road?â
An answer flashed through Nina Jacobsâs mind, but she kept it to herself.
It seemed neither Mordecai Quinn nor the people from the base knew Sean Joyce had been here.
Let alone that he had destroyed this stretch of road.
"If he really did run off with the supplies, I just hope heâs doing okay now.
Once I see him again, Iâll beat the hell out of him."
Mordecai Quinn got out of the car.
He watched Nina Jacobsâs back, still unsure what she was about to do.
He saw Nina Jacobs place her hand on the ground. Then, he witnessed a glow that seemed otherworldly.
The light flowed like a liquid across the filthy ground, gradually spreading forward.
"What is this?"
he couldnât help but ask.
"A trap."
Nina Jacobs noticed that the speed at which she could condense her liquid fire was much faster than back in City D.
"A Fire Element Superpower can do that?!"
Staring at the strange sight, the group almost forgot the task Mordecai Quinn had given them.
They were supposed to be setting more traps.
Mordecai Quinn had guessed Nina Jacobsâs trap would be effective, but he hadnât expected it to be *this* effective.
The zombies they hadnât finished off earlier were already catching up.
Those that stepped into the liquid fire vanished into the sea of flames from a distance.
The more zombies there were, the more fiercely the flames burned.
Even when a Mutated Zombie tried to shield itself with its Superpower, it was quickly pinned in place by Stone Spikes that erupted from the ground.
"To think our Base Leader knows someone this incredible..."
Seeing this, many of them started to get excited.
All they had to do was stand here and lure the zombies over.
This was awesome!
"Are you okay?"
Mordecai Quinn walked over and asked.
He was worried such a massive trap would excessively drain Nina Jacobsâs Superpower.
To his surprise, however, her complexion was rosy, showing no signs of Superpower exhaustion.
"One more thing. I ran into Zachary Ziegler before I got here."
Nina Jacobs pulled Mordecai Quinn aside and said to him.
"Where is he?"
Mordecai Quinn frowned. Nina Jacobs hadnât been separated from the group for long.
He had assumed sheâd just shaken off Zachary Ziegler, who had been following her.
"Dead."
Nina Jacobs replied.
"Dead?"
"All of them are dead. No one else knows about this,"
Nina Jacobs answered.
Because she and Wayne Warner had already killed Zachary Ziegler and all the people he brought with him.
Mordecai Quinn was only surprised for a moment. Remembering their capabilities, he quickly accepted it.
âZachary Zieglerâs death was no great loss.â
"But Zachary Ziegler confessed a few things before he died."
After a momentâs thought, Nina Jacobs decided to tell him what she knew about Sean Joyce.
"What did you say?!"
Noticing people in the distance looking over, Mordecai Quinn realized his reaction had been too loud.
âSean Joyce was the one who blew up this road?â
"The road ahead splits. One path leads into Veridia, the other goes to Keldorn... Could he have gone to Keldorn?"
Mordecai Quinnâs thoughts were in a turmoil.
"Not necessarily. Since Zachary Ziegler knew about this, thereâs another possibility.
Sean Joyce was being hunted by them and was forced to destroy the only road out."
As soon as Nina Jacobs finished speaking, Mordecai Quinn froze on the spot.
âThatâs right... Why would Zachary Ziegler know that Sean Joyce blew up the road?â
Everyone at the base, including him, only knew that the last place Sean Joyce was seen before his disappearance was just outside the base entrance.
âUnless he was there at the time!â
And the one hunting Sean Joyce was very likely Zachary Ziegler.
Mordecai Quinn looked devastated. âWhat on earth did Sean Joyce go through that day?â
"If thatâs true, then he didnât intentionally run off with the supplies,"
Nina Jacobs said.
"Youâre right. If Sean Joyce is still alive, he must be somewhere up ahead."
A flicker of hope ignited in Mordecai Quinnâs heart.
Whether or not they could recover the supplies, he was more concerned with finding out what Sean Joyce had truly been through.
Nina Jacobs was also planning to head into Veridia.
Because just a moment ago, the systemâs "Free Shopping Mission 45" had refreshed.
The mission location was in Veridia, just ahead.
Meanwhile, the group noticed that the number of zombies was indeed increasing.
"If weâd stayed back there, who knows if weâd be dead or alive right now,"
Oswin Marshall said to Daniel Lewis.
The trap up ahead had already incinerated at least a thousand zombies.
"Yeah. Her combat experience must be greater than any of ours."
Daniel Lewisâs gaze toward Nina Jacobs was now filled with respect.
An hour later, Nina Jacobs simply stopped replenishing the liquid fire.
By this time, the others had used the opportunity to rest, and the wounded had all been stabilized.
"Keep pushing forward! We clear this road today, no matter what!"
Mordecai Quinn ordered.
Although they had braced themselves, their legs couldnât help but tremble when they saw the massive pit teeming with zombies.
There had to be eight thousand, if not ten thousand, zombies in there!
After seeing Mordecai Quinn lead his men to clear out some of the zombies on the upper edges, Nina Jacobs got out of her car as well.
"Weâve run into this kind of situation on the road before. Itâs basically a natural trap."
Nina Jacobs directed her liquid fire to flow directly into the pit.
Seeing this, the other Fire Element Superpower Users also began hurling Fireballs into the pit.
To the sound of the zombiesâ roars from within the pit and the sight of thick black smoke billowing up, everyone felt it was an image they would never forget.
"Never felt so damn good in my life,"
Daniel Lewis said.
Incinerating so many zombies with almost no effort was an unprecedented experience.
The massive fire burned for a full forty minutes.
During this time, the systemâs "Selfless Savior" title was triggered repeatedly. Including the reward from the earlier Intermediate Zombie, she had obtained over a thousand bottles of Healing Potion.
Nina Jacobs also used the systemâs "One-Click Collection" skill to gather all the Crystal Cores from the pit into her storage.
"All Earth Element and Gold Element Superpower Users, step forward!"
Mordecai Quinn commanded.
They had to fill this pit within the day.
Nina Jacobs was clearly experienced. Under her guidance, the pit was filled in just over two hours.
Although there were still plenty of zombies on the other side of the road, the group felt like they had energy to spare.
"Weâre finally through."
Mordecai Quinn said with emotion, standing at a fork in the road.
Just then, Nina Jacobs walked toward a sign on the side of the road.
A warning was written on the sign: "Warning: City-wide zombie alert ahead. Stay out if you want to live."
Below the text was a drawing of a skull. The cartoonish face looked almost comical and completely out of place with its surroundings.
Mordecai Quinn followed Nina Jacobsâs gaze, and then his eyes widened as he strode quickly toward the sign.
"What is it?" Nina Jacobs asked.
Mordecai Quinnâs expression was one of intense excitement.
"This face... heâs the only one who draws them like this,"
Mordecai Quinn replied, his eyes fixed on the sign.
