Chapter 383: Chapter 383: Two Purposes
"By the tank, weâre at about 80 so far."
Felix Finch replied.
Nina Jacobs nodded. "The next few days are going to be tough. Thank you for all your hard work."
This was the first day, and it was already a good start.
For now, the water tanks were still their primary means of collecting water.
Fortunately, Gralem Prison already had its own independent water supply system.
Once they cleaned and disinfected the dedicated water supply equipment and tanks, they could supply water to the entire area.
However, she and Felix Finch had already inspected the system; the main supply unit required a certain minimum volume of water to function.
They needed to store as much water as they could.
"Itâs no trouble. Compared to how things were before, this is a hundred times better,"
Felix Finch said.
He didnât know why, but even though this was only the beginning, he already felt a sense of belonging.
Nina Jacobs didnât have a perfect plan, but everyone here was bustling with activity, working toward the same goal.
Perhaps because of everything they had all been through, they cherished the present all the more.
"Letâs call it a day. Thereâs still a lot to do, so get some rest."
Nina Jacobs was exhausted, too.
She had rarely depleted her Superpowers since reaching the Intermediate level, but today, she was completely drained. And that was even with the help of the systemâs Superpower Recovery Potions.
Gralem Prison was comprised of many buildings.
Two of them were staff dormitories.
Cordelia had thoughtfully prepared a room for Nina Jacobs. It was a two-bedroom suite with a living room and a clean, spacious balcony.
Juliette Ainsworth had already installed solar panels on the balcony, so running a fan wouldnât be an issue.
"This is wonderful. Thank you."
Nina Jacobs wasnât picky about her surroundings, but every detail here radiated Cordeliaâs care.
"Donât thank me. Iâm just happy if you like it."
After Cordelia left, Nina Jacobs went to check on Wayne Warnerâs room.
It was also spotless, with an exceptionally large bed.
"Weâll be staying here for a while. Once Iâve finished up, weâll go back,"
Nina Jacobs said to Wayne Warner.
"Okay."
Wayne Warner seemed to be getting ready to do laundry. Nina Jacobs glanced at the washbasin, and her face instantly flushed.
In it were the clothes she had just changed out of.
"Who put you up to this? Iâll do my own laundry from now on."
With a sigh, Nina Jacobs took the washbasin and left.
On their way back, they had run into that girl, Eulalia Lewis. Sheâd been going on about washing her idol Silas Crowleyâs clothes, saying it was only natural and proper.
âShe suspected Wayne Warner had taken it to heart again...â
That night, Nina Jacobs used her communicator to tell Vera Coleman she was at a base.
Of course, she didnât mention that it was Gralem Prison, which she had just seized.
Vera Coleman was greatly relieved to hear her daughter was at a base. She also told Nina that Adrian Shaw and Shirley Lucas had returned safely a couple of days ago.
Probably to keep Daniel Hale and Vera Coleman from worrying, Shirley Lucas had even made a point of explaining that Nina Jacobs had gone to another base to "gain experience."
âSo they made it back safely...â
Nina Jacobs thought back to how she had left Mornfell without saying a word to anyone.
More than ten days had passed since sheâd left Mornfell.
She had come to the Keldorn region with two goals: collect resources, and use those resources in trades to upgrade her system as quickly as possible.
But her progress was clearly lagging.
Achilles Renner, Tristan Lynch, and the others had already gathered some resources.
Most of these resources were locked in the prisonâs underground warehouse, while the rest was with Damian, the Space Superpower User.
The next morning, Nina Jacobsâ first stop was the underground warehouse.
The underground warehouse here was much larger than she had imagined.
âLooks like we can use this as our main warehouse from now on.â
The warehouse area was clearly demarcated. It was located beneath the two largest buildings in Gralem Prison, so its footprint was massive.
However, the current amount of resources was so small it only took up one sad little corner of the vast space.
âWe really have nothing...â
Nina Jacobs shook her head. It was one thing to be low on resources, but they didnât even have a single Crystal Core.
âLooks like Iâll have to fleece some Crystal Cores from Lornwood Base when the time comes...â
On the second day, Cordelia continued to lead Nina Jacobs around the perimeter to set up defenses.
But the defenses they built that day were not walls.
Looking at the large patch of sandy ground before them, Cordelia tossed a rock into it.
The rock was immediately swallowed by the sand.
"So this is a quicksand trap..."
Cordelia said in amazement.
Nina Jacobs had used her Superpower to turn nearly ten meters of ground ahead into sand. Cordelia suspected that if zombies came, they wouldnât even make it to the defensive wall ten meters beyond before being swallowed by the quicksand.
Whatâs more, there was a two-meter-wide stretch of Stone Spikes between the quicksand and the wall.
Those Stone Spikes were exceptionally sharp. Even if zombies felt no pain, any that tried to climb the wall would be skewered if they fell.
"Okay, this area is done. Letâs move on,"
Nina Jacobs said.
"Oh! Right. Okay."
Cordelia snapped out of it and immediately started up their small trike.
She finally understood how Nina Jacobs had been so confident she could finish all the defenses in three days.
Nina Jacobs had created what looked like a massive field of quicksand and Stone Spikes in just a single day.
That day, Nina Jacobs once again completely exhausted her Superpowers.
"She set up three different types of traps around the entire perimeter in just two days, all by herself. Thatâs some insane power!"
"This place is as big as Lornwood Base, you know? With a leader this powerful, I think we have a bright future here."
"Exactly. If we contribute more to the new base now, we might get put in important positions."
"That makes sense. Captain Finch and his guys have taught us a lot these past two days. Maybe this time... things will really be different."
A few Water Element Superpower Users were gathered together, chatting.
"Give me a break. None of you can produce as much water as Miss Jacobsâs Water Element cat."
Eulalia Lewis said, walking over after overhearing them.
"Water Element... cat?"
Laura turned her head and asked in confusion.
"Thatâs right. The cat thatâs always with Miss Jacobs has a Water Element Superpower, too. I contributed three tanks of water today. The cat contributed six."
The only reason Eulalia Lewis was so eager to contribute water every day was to get praise from Silas Crowley.
But when she went to check the log, she found that a cat had been at the top of the list for two days running.
"Thereâs a log?"
Gwendolyn hadnât noticed.
Eulalia Lewis nodded. "There is."
Felix Finch had created the log simply to track their current water reserves, so he recorded everyoneâs daily contribution.
At that, Lynn Carter stood up. "My Superpower... has recovered a little. Iâm going to go make another contribution."
"Iâll go too."
Laura quickly followed.
Nina Jacobs was in The Aquifer, listening to Felix Finchâs work report.
"Aside from whatâs happening here, you need to start handling the baseâs other affairs as well."
Nina Jacobs said to Felix Finch after hearing his report.
At first, Felix Finch didnât catch the implication in her words. He simply said:
"Iâve said it before, Miss Jacobs. You can command me as you see fit, no matter how dangerous the task."
"Managing a base isnât what Iâd call dangerous. Itâs just tedious and a lot of work."
Nina Jacobs said matter-of-factly, gazing at the hundreds of water tanks before them.
"Manage... the base?"
Now it was Felix Finchâs turn to be stunned.
âWhat did she mean by that?â
