Chapter 413: Chapter 413: To Treat an Illness
Sheâd originally been suspicious of Harlan and Evander Langdonâs relationship.
She even suspected Harlan was controlling Evander Langdon through medical techniques or Hypnosis, but that theory didnât seem to connect to the combat tournament.
So why did Evander Langdon go watch the combat tournament every day?
If she couldnât figure that out, Nina Jacobs felt all her previous deductions would fall apart.
Her deal with Harlan was temporarily settled, so Naomi Summersâs condition should stabilize.
The next problem was how to get Naomi Summers out of the Correctional Pod.
"Trying to get her out of here is impossible."
Harlan was gesturing over a corpse, a sharp cutting knife in his hand.
"But she canât stay here with you forever."
To be on the safe side, Nina Jacobs still hadnât told Tobin about Naomi.
"Itâs not entirely impossible."
Harlan stopped his cutting knife. "Let her stay here as my assistant. That way, no one will dare to touch her."
Nina Jacobs sneered. "You want to use her to threaten me?"
âIf Naomi stays, Harlan will always have something to hold over me.â
Harlan shrugged. "If you want to think of it that way, thereâs nothing I can do."
âClassic player line.â
Nina Jacobs cursed inwardly.
But she really didnât have any better options.
"Once I find a way to cure my patient, I might be able to return her to you, safe and sound."
Harlan leaned over and cut off the corpseâs head.
âA patient?â
"Whoâs your patient?"
Nina Jacobs asked. She hadnât noticed anyone sick here.
Zachary Sterling and the others had said it tooâin the Correctional Pod, you were either alive or dead. There was no in-between.
"A friend of a friend.
But I promised this friend Iâd cure him for her."
Harlan answered without looking up.
The room reeked of formalin and disinfectant.
As Nina Jacobs left and closed the door, she could still see Harlanâs intensely focused expression.
âA mad doctor who loves dissecting is actually trying to cure someone?â
The nights inside the Correctional Pod were also quite lively.
That evening, Zachary Sterling dragged Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner to the so-called "superstore."
Nina Jacobs found it was just a small shop with a meager selection.
Most of the items inside were extremely expensive.
A single pack of instant noodles sold for 3,000 Crystal Cores.
A man and a woman were running the shop. The woman seemed to be in charge of counting the Crystal Cores; next to her was a wooden crate already more than half full of them.
Nina Jacobsâs eyes lingered on the wooden crate for only a moment before she picked up a single pack of crackers.
Wayne Warner had already eaten in his room before they came out. Seeing Nina Jacobs grab crackers, he took an identical pack, along with a bottle of fruit-flavored milk.
Theseus York and the others were clearly used to these prices, selecting two bags of goods without flinching at the cost.
When it was time to pay, Nina Jacobs noticed that those two bags alone cost 200,000 Crystal Cores.
The male proprietor casually took Zachary Sterlingâs points card, swiped it, and shot him a look.
"This is the charm of the Correctional Pod, hahaha."
Zachary Sterling had their accompanying Space Superpower User store the items, then followed them out of the shop, laughing heartily.
However, they had barely stepped out of the small shop before a large group of people surrounded them, blocking any escape.
"Crap. Theyâre probably after our points card,"
Sophia Spencer said.
"Or it could be about tomorrowâs combat tournament," Zachary Sterling added, skillfully materializing a scimitar.
This sort of thing happened every day in the Correctional Pod. Especially the night before a fight, it was common for the next dayâs competitors to be attacked and injured, affecting their performance in the match.
"Whatâs this? You guys hit the jackpot and youâre not going to share a little with your brothers and sisters here?"
A man in a black T-shirt standing in the center of the crowd stared at the surrounded group with a smirk.
"Ansel, if youâve got the guts, go earn it yourself! Are you just trying to show off how many guys you have?"
Zachary Sterling retorted rudely.
He also had a vague feeling that something was off. The other side had managed to gather over 300 people so quickly.
"Shouldâve just spent it all,"
Sophia Spencer muttered.
"Scared now? Just hand over the points card.
We can all still be friends."
Ansel Garner said.
"What do you think, boss? Do we hand it over?"
Someone asked Theseus York.
If they didnât, a bloody fight was inevitable.
"Huh?"
Theseus York scratched the back of his head, looking conflicted.
Everyone had been celebrating this all day.
He didnât want to give it up.
"We earned this fair and square. Of course weâre not handing it over."
A voice cut in. Theseus York and the others all turned to look at Nina Jacobs.
"Fair and square? Youâre plenty capable, alright.
But here and now, might makes right."
Ansel Garner wasnât intimidated in the slightest.
Because all 300 of his people were Superpower Users.
"Yeah, how tough can one Earth Element Superpower User be, anyway?" the person next to Ansel Garner added.
A smile played on Nina Jacobsâs lips.
âThese guys came at the perfect time.â
Just after entering the shop, she had unexpectedly sensed her Little Zombie Rat from the day before.
She had left the rat in a ventilation duct, and right now, it was right beneath their feet.
In other words, there was very likely an underground tunnel right below them.
"You want to see what an Earth Element Superpower can do? Fine."
Nina Jacobs waved her hand, summoning her Superpower.
Ansel Garner and his men assumed it was an attack and immediately raised their guards to defend.
But a few seconds later, a rumbling tremor came from the ground.
SHIIINK!
Sharp spikes shot up from the ground. The earth beneath their opponentsâ feet cracked open, revealing a faint light from the fissure below.
âSo it is here.â
"All of you, stop! What do you think youâre doing?!"
An unexpected voice rang out. It was Ms. Carter, the first to arrive on the scene.
A number of guards followed behind her.
Nina Jacobs had no choice but to stop. She hadnât expected anyone to arrive so quickly.
"It was Ansel! He started it! He tried to rob us!"
Sophia Spencer hurriedly explained.
"Everyone, leave this area immediately!"
Ms. Carter glanced at Ninaâs group and commanded.
Nina Jacobs felt a twinge of regret, but she left with the others.
Immediately after, the supervisors of several teams were summoned.
All except for the seriously injured Everett Young.
Before Ansel Garner could even speak, Reinhard Caldwell lopped off his head.
"Oh dear, was I too quick?
I forgot to ask whose idea this was."
Reinhard Caldwell said with a grin. The man in the suit beside him shook his head.
"A shame. He was still so young."
While the supervisors spoke, the rest of the crowd stared at Ansel Garnerâs headless corpse, trembling too much to make a sound.
This continued until a short, thin man walked toward Nina Jacobs.
"Youâre the young lady who made me lose my bet, arenât you?"
He stood with his hands behind his back, his thin face creased with wrinkles.
The wrinkles were likely from rapid muscle atrophy.
"Making you lose, Old Ghost, just means that I won.
You old gambling ghost, Nina Jacobs is fighting again tomorrow. Are you betting on her to win or lose?"
Harlan had sidled up next to Nina Jacobs without a sound. He twirled a pair of surgical scissors in his hand as he asked in a casual tone.
"Donât worry, I can afford to lose."
The Old Ghost glanced at Nina Jacobs, then moved back to the front, his hands still clasped behind his back.
Nina Jacobs knew that Harlan had just gotten her out of a tight spot.
