Chapter 416: Chapter 416: She Will Do Her Best to Avenge Him
"Her power is truly unfathomable."
Ms. Carter sat back down.
No one had expected Montagueâs attack, which was meant to pin Nina Jacobs down, to be neutralized in an instant.
Montague had planned to orchestrate something from behind his shield, but he was exposed in a flash.
"Yes, truly unfathomable.
But Montague is finished now."
The man in the suit was Wyatt Holden, the supervisor of Team 5. Montague appeared to be an ordinary member of Team 5, but he was actually their man.
Whenever someone went on a winning streak, Montague would appear and use various methods to defeat them.
This included the bottle of "Carefree Water" that had just dropped to the ground, a substance that prevented people from concentrating enough to summon their Superpowers.
The ingenious part about this "Carefree Water" was that even when used on an opponent, it was very difficult for them to notice.
"Iâll submit a request to the higher-ups to have him transferred somewhere else,"
Ms. Carter said.
"Thatâs true. If..."
Before Wyatt Holden could finish his sentence, the situation in the arena changed dramatically.
A scream mingled with an enraged curse rang out.
Stone Spikes had shot up from the ground, piercing both of Montagueâs thighs.
"Nina Jacobs, let me remind you, you canât kill me!"
Montague was in excruciating pain. Nina Jacobs hadnât killed her opponents in the previous two matches.
But Nina Jacobs simply held up the small silver bottle for all to see and shook it. She then mercilessly stomped on his wounds, letting him continue to scream.
"So, youâve been winning all this time by doping your opponents?
No wonder you dared to come up here despite being so weak.
Now, the question is, who gave you this drug?"
Everyone present heard Nina Jacobsâs words loud and clear.
In the audience, Dominic Sloan clenched his fists.
He stared intently at the object in Nina Jacobsâs hand.
After his last winning streak, he had been defeated by Montague. Heâd had plenty of Superpower left at the time, but for some reason, he couldnât use it.
It all happened after he was scratched by Montagueâs vines. The smell coming from the wound then was the same one heâd smelled on Montague.
Although he had fought with all his might to save his own life, he still lost the match.
He had been completely convinced of his loss to Nina Jacobs.
But Montague... he didnât deserve his victory.
And Nina Jacobs was right. Who on earth gave Montague that drug?
"No wonder I always felt Montagueâs wins were strange. So he was cheating!"
"Montague only fights people on a winning streak. You donât think this is some conspiracy from the higher-ups, do you?"
The crowd buzzed with discussion.
Montague had no reason to do these things on his own.
The most likely possibility was that someone didnât want them getting out this way.
Just then, the referee hurriedly announced the result of the match.
Seeing that her goal was achieved, Nina Jacobs walked off the stage, her expression as calm as ever.
The moment she stepped off the stage, Montague, who was still on it behind her, was suddenly engulfed in fierce flames!
"AHHH!!"
As the bloodcurdling screams continued, the referee stood there, dumbfounded.
"Didnât you... You..."
the referee yelled at Nina Jacobs, who had raised her hand to unleash the fire.
"You already announced the match results, didnât you?"
Nina Jacobsâs words left the referee speechless.
She was right. She hadnât killed her opponent during the match.
Montagueâs screams continued to echo through the arena. He rolled around, begging for help, even trying in vain to use his Wood Element Superpower to extinguish the flames, but it was no use.
The fire burned at a slow, steady pace.
Anyone with eyes could see that Nina Jacobs was doing this on purpose.
She was slowly torturing Montague.
The referee didnât dare call for help, simply because Nina Jacobs hadnât left.
It wasnât until twenty-some minutes later that the screams finally subsided.
Although no blood had been spattered, the sight of the charred corpse was horrifying.
This time, there were no excited cheers from the arena, only fear.
In the corridor outside the fighting arena.
Nina Jacobs walked over to a glass window.
She gazed out the window at the empty space beyond and murmured softly,
"Mr. Crawford, even though we never met, I have avenged you."
Behind her, Wayne Warner stood guard silently.
For the past few days, she had been privately inquiring about Jared Crawford.
Once she learned that Montague was the main culprit behind Jared Crawfordâs death, she had no intention of letting him live.
Although Montague had certainly been acting under someone elseâs orders, she would take her time dealing with the rest.
The things Jared Crawford had left behind were a great help to her.
Besides, she had made a promise to Jared Crawfordâs wife, Chrysanthe Abbott.
She would do her best to avenge Jared Crawford.
Sensing someone approaching, Nina Jacobs looked over.
The newcomer was wearing a suit; it was the man who had appeared earlier with the supervisors of the other teams.
"Iâm Wyatt Holden, supervisor of Team 5. Miss Jacobs, would you be interested in a chat?"
Wyatt Holden got straight to the point.
"A chat?"
Nina Jacobs looked at him suspiciously.
"Thatâs right. I mean no harm.
Perhaps we can discuss a way for you and your friends to get out of here?"
Wyatt Holden laid out his terms.
Just as they had expected, Nina Jacobs agreed.
She was led out of the building.
Outside, the sun blazed down, its light blinding. Even the concrete pavement underfoot was cracked from the heat.
Wyatt Holden walked ahead, putting some distance between them.
She vaguely sensed that something was wrong.
A shadow flickered across the scorched ground, and Nina Jacobs immediately stopped in her tracks.
But Wyatt Holden, who was ahead of her, kept walking without pause.
A distant wall began to ripple and warp, and then, without warning, several long, sharp arrows shot out toward the back of the distant person!
BANG!
The metal arrows were blocked by a wall of sand.
The collision of sand and metal produced a shower of dazzling sparks.
CRACK.
The sand wall actually showed faint signs of cracking. Nina Jacobs quickly dodged to the side and summoned a normal Stone Shield.
"Not bad."
The nearby metal wall gradually reshaped itself and retracted.
A vaguely familiar figure appeared from behind the wall, accompanied by laughter.
It was General Hughes.
Behind him stood two other people, who looked like attendants of some sort.
Anselm Hughes looked at Nina Jacobs, his tone holding both admiration and wariness.
"Are you an Intermediate Superpower User?" he asked.
"Whatâs an Intermediate Superpower User?"
Nina Jacobs feigned confusion.
âThe surprise attack just now was strange. Wyatt Holden reacted as if heâd known about it in advance. Thatâs why I deliberately suppressed my Superpowerâs effect, weakening the defensive power of the Diamond Sand. It seems my suspicions were correct.â
"Itâs nothing. Your reflexes are indeed very fast,
and you have a Dual Element Superpower. Youâre a promising candidate."
A calculating look flashed in Anselm Hughesâs eyes.
Then, he turned to Wyatt Holden, who was waiting in the distance, and said, "Wyatt Holden, you can take her now."
"Yes, General Hughes."
Wyatt Holden nodded, his attitude toward Nina Jacobs becoming a bit more courteous.
When she saw that the person sitting before her was Ms. Carter, Nina Jacobs feigned surprise, even though sheâd already had a hunch.
Ms. Carter didnât offer any explanation, either. She simply smiled and placed a file in front of her.
"Weâve looked into your case. You only arrived at our base a few days ago. The reason you came here was for these Superpower Users, wasnât it? Are you friends?"
She pointed to several names in the file.
The names of Cordelia and the others were written there.
Seeing that Nina Jacobs only frowned and didnât object, she continued.
"You went to all that trouble to get into the correction pod just to save this person, Tobin?"
"I have to say, I really admire you for being so loyal to your friends. According to the results of our review, both you and your friend, Wayne Warner, are innocent,"
Ms. Carter said.
"What do you mean?" Nina Jacobs asked.
âThis Ms. Carter doesnât seem to be mentioning the fact that I killed that bald captain at all.â
"It means the two of you can leave this place. You donât have to serve any time,"
Wyatt Holden added from the side.
