Chapter 759: Mudwave
The shrieks of the zombies rang out one after anotherâbut were quickly drowned beneath the thunder of artillery fire.
Aboard the Command Frigate, Garrick stood at the helm, fully in control. The low-level zombies were nothing more than cannon fodderâutterly harmless against their firepower.
âNot a single one worth fighting,â Garrick muttered under his breath, hands clasped behind his back.
The others, seeing his calm demeanor, felt their nerves ease a little.
Maybe this mission wasnât going to be as tough as theyâd feared.
All they had to do was keep blasting their way forward until that white-shirted Zombie King finally showed up.
Against these low-tier undead, human tech was still king. It was like mowing down cavemen with machine gunsâa total one-sided slaughter.
But then, just moments later, a sudden flash of red lit up the horizonâlike a meteor streaking across the desolate earth.
As it drew closer, a wave of raw, violent energy surged ahead of it, crashing over the battlefield like a tsunami. The oppressive aura of a powerful Zombie King rolled in, chilling everyone to the bone.
âHold up!â
Everyone on the Command Frigate froze.
âWhat the hell is that?â
They didnât have to wonder long. A figure emergedâclearly a Zombie King, radiating a terrifying presence, his face twisted in seething rage.
It was the Bloodveil Zombie King.
With a sweep of both arms, he unleashed streams of mutated bloodâlike twin beams of crimson energyâslicing through the sky.
Several aircraft were hit instantly, their hulls corroding and splitting in half mid-air, trailing black smoke as they spiraled down in flames.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions rocked the battlefield, shockwaves rippling outward in every direction.
âRRAAAHHHâ!â
The zombie horde below felt the surge of power and roared in unison, their bloodlust ignited. They grew more savage, more frenzied.
Their boss had arrived.
And when a horde is led by a true king, it stops being a mindless mobâit becomes a war machine.
The Snout Zombie King grinned wide. âPerfect timing. I was just about to hit my limit.â
âHell yeah! Boss Bloodveilâs finally here!â his underlings shouted, pumped up and ready to tear into the enemy.
Sure enough, the aircraft in the sky scrambled to retreat, pulling up fast and abandoning their bombardment of the horde.
Garrickâs brow furrowed as he stared down at Bloodveil.
That pressureâjust his presence alone was enough to shift the tide of battle. The sheer force of it made Garrickâs soul shudder, like he was staring down a natural predator.
Only one kind of creature could radiate that kind of power.
The Voidborn Undying.
âSo soonâŠ? Heâs already here?!â
This was supposed to be the outskirts. There shouldnât be any Voidborn Undying out here.
Unless⊠theyâd been planning this all along.
âInstructor Garrick! Weâve confirmed itâitâs a Voidborn Undying! We need to report this to Commodore Howard, ASAP!â
âYeah, do it. ButâŠâ Garrickâs eyes narrowed. âThis guyâs not the one in the white shirt, is he?â
Back during the Battle of the Skywall, theyâd captured footage of a Zombie King in a white shirtâthe one whoâd led the assault. But this one? Totally different.
Bloodveilâs blood-red eyes scanned the sky, locking onto the aircraft above. They were sleek, advancedâexactly what heâd come for.
âPerfect,â he muttered to himself, eyes gleaming.
Then his gaze locked onto the Command Frigate.
That one was clearly the most advanced of the bunch. It could practically serve as a mobile zombie nest all on its own.
A prize like that? No way he was letting the other Zombie Kings get their hands on it.
âThat oneâs mine.â
He bent his knees, muscles coiling like springsâthen launched himself into the air with explosive force.
The ground beneath him shattered, spiderweb cracks spreading outward before collapsing into rubble.
Bloodveil shot into the sky like a missile, rocketing straight toward the Command Frigate.
âInstructor Garrick! H-heâs coming straight at us!â someone shouted, panic rising in their voice.
âGet us upânow! Full ascent!â Garrick barked without hesitation.
The massive Command Frigate, like a mountain with engines, roared to life. Hundreds of thrusters ignited beneath it, spewing fire and smoke as the ship surged upward into the sky.
But Bloodveilâs eyes gleamed with malice. âTrying to run?â
With a vicious snarl, he whipped his arms forward. Twin chains of mutated blood lashed out like living whips, wrapping around two corners of the frigate.
Then, with a brutal yank, he used the momentum to hurl himself even faster toward the ship.
Panic erupted on the Command Frigateâs deck.
Garrickâs face was grim. If a Voidborn Undying made it aboard, it was game over. Even with a full crew of elite soldiers, they wouldnât stand a chance.
âWe canât let that bastard set foot on this ship,â Garrick muttered, as if making a final decision. He turned and strode toward the hatch.
âInstructor Garrickâ!â
The crewâs eyes widened. They knew exactly what he was about to do.
Garrick reached a sealed airlock, slammed his palm on the green-lit panel, and the doors hissed open with a metallic clunk.
A violent gust of wind tore at his graying hair as the hatch opened to the open sky.
Below, a crimson glow surged upwardâBloodveil was closing in fast, his killing intent like a blade in the air.
No time to hesitate.
âStonefist,â Garrick growled.
A dull yellow light surged across his body as earth-element energy gathered, concentrating around his right fist. It hardened, thickenedâbecoming a weapon of pure force.
Without another word, he leapt into the open sky, fist cocked back, aiming straight for the incoming Bloodveil.
Garrick wasnât just any soldierâhe was SS+ class. Just a hairâs breadth from breaking into SSS. His power was nothing to scoff at.
His fist blazed like a meteor, friction igniting sparks as it tore through the air, trailing a fiery tail behind it.
âOh?â Bloodveilâs eyes narrowed. He felt the pressure barreling toward him.
He immediately released the blood chains. The mutated blood around his arms writhed and shifted, forming a thick, crimson shield in front of him.
BOOOOM!
The two collided mid-air with a deafening crash, like steel slamming into steel, like a comet striking the earth.
The shockwave rippled outward, distorting the air around them.
Their bodies plummeted from the sky.
BAM! BAM!
They hit the ground almost simultaneously.
Garrick landed hard, his Earth Armor absorbing the impact. Cracks spiderwebbed out beneath his boots, the ground fracturing under the force.
Bloodveil stood across from him, equally steady, his feet planted in the shattered earth.
Two titans, face to face.
âHeh heh heh⊠Not bad. Looks like I wonât just be taking a shipâI might get a nice crystal core out of this too,â Bloodveil sneered, eyes gleaming with hunger.
He could already sense itâthis human was strong, but not quite SSS. Still below him.
âTry me and find out,â Garrick shot back, voice cold, unshaken.
Bloodveilâs grin widened, cruel and eager. âThen letâs see what youâve got!â
In a flash, he vanished into a streak of blood-red light, charging straight at Garrick.
âMudwave,â Garrick whispered.
He stomped the ground.
Earth-element energy surged downward, and the terrain beneath them rippledâlike water.
Bloodveilâs footing suddenly gave way. His momentum faltered as his legs sank into the shifting ground, his speed dropping sharply.
A real, literal quagmire.
âThe hellâŠ?â Bloodveil frowned, glancing down at the strange, undulating earth.
But before he could react, a gust of wind slammed into himâGarrickâs armored fist was already in his face.
CRACK!
The punch sent Bloodveil flying over a hundred feet before he managed to stop himself, skidding across the ground.
Garrick stood tall, unmoving, his Earth Armor gleaming in the dust.
âSub-SSS?â he said, voice like stone. âI dominate.
Above SSS? Then we both fall.â
