CapĂtulo 1048: She Chose the Wolves
Once the others had left, Mia turned to Zach again, her tone more serious.
âWhen you take control of the Safe Zone, you need to start planning an evacuation from Starlight City as soon as possible. Ethan reminded me of something we were already worried aboutâheâs right. The number of zombies here is insane. If a higher-tier zombie shows up and rallies them, we could be looking at hundreds of thousands swarming the city. Thereâs no way weâd be able to hold it.â
Zach nodded. âIâve thought about that too. Iâll start making arrangements.â
Then he gave her a strange look. âFrom the way youâre talking⊠youâre not planning to come with us, are you?â
Mia smiled faintly. âMayor Marks is dead. Uncle Reyes has been avenged. And now that Captain Ethanâs here⊠itâs time for me to return to the squad.â
âYouâre really planning to join them?â Zach asked, clearly puzzled. âYou think theyâre safer than the military?â
âIâm not chasing safety,â Mia said, eyes shining with conviction. âIâm chasing strength. And I feel like Iâll grow the fastest with them.â
âDid he agree to take you in?â
ââŠâ
âIâll figure something out,â she said, a little embarrassed.
Zach sighed. âAlright. If thatâs your choice, I wonât try to stop you. Theyâre strongâif you can join their squad, itâs not a bad thing.â
âColonel Reyes asked me to look after you, but honestly, youâve been the one helping us all along. If there ever comes a day you donât want to stay with them anymore, youâre always welcome back. This place will always be your home.â
Mia nodded. âYou guys be careful too. Donât end up like my dad or Uncle Reyes. Itâs the apocalypseâlearn to adapt. Think about yourselves and your people more.â
âWe will.â

Meanwhile, Ethan was lounging in the waiting room, enjoying the overly attentive service of the receptionist.
Maybe Mia had said something before she left, because this girl was going all outâmaking coffee, checking on him every few minutes, chatting about life in the compound. She was so enthusiastic, Ethan almost forgot he had two people still waiting outside.
Eventually, Mia walked in, carrying a large backpack.
âMia,â the receptionist greeted her quickly.
âYouâve done enough. Go ahead and get back to work,â Mia said with a nod.
âYes, maâam.â
As Mia approached, Ethan stood up.
âYou brought the stuff?â
âYeah, Iâve got it.â
âHand it over, then.â
âNo need. Iâll carry it myself.â
ââŠWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âCaptain, Iâm rejoining the squad.â
Pfftâ Ethan spat out his tea.
âWhen did I ever say you could rejoin?â
âIâm a reserve member of the Fallen Star Squad. Naturally, I should be with the squad. You said you were evaluating me, right? How are you supposed to evaluate me if Iâm not with you?â
ââŠâ
âWhy are you still trying to follow us?â Ethan frowned. âMayor Marks is dead. You donât need me to help you get revenge anymore. Once the military takes over the Safe Zone, theyâll be the biggest power in Starlight City. Wouldnât it be better to stay with themâlive comfortably, eat well?â
âItâs not the same,â Mia said, shaking her head.
âSoldiers are loyal to the nation. No matter how the world changes, that wonât. If Washington sends someone to take over the Safe Zone, theyâll cooperate without question. And I wonât be able to stop it.â
âBut thatâs not the life I want. I want freedom. I want to chase strength without being shackled by rules.â
âLife in the Fallen Star Squadâthatâs what I want. Do what you want, grow stronger, and if someone pisses you off, you deal with it. No red tape, no need for evidence. Everythingâs decided by power.â
âYouâre only seven people, but you crushed the governmentâs strongest faction. That says everything. If I want to grow stronger, thereâs no better place.â
âHonestly, the first time I met you, I already wanted to join. I just didnât have the guts to ask. I thought youâd turn me down.â
âSo when you suddenly invited me last time, I didnât even hesitate.â Miaâs voice softened a little, her words tumbling out faster now, a bit shy.
Ethan finally took a good, serious look at the woman standing in front of him.
Twenty years old. Five-foot-six. Face that could put most A-list actresses to shame. Body? Equally top-tier.
And on top of all that, she was smart as hell.
That was pushing it.
People always said when God opens one door, He closes another. But with this woman? What, did God get drunk and just throw open every damn door?
âYou really plan on sticking with us?â Ethan asked, his tone turning serious.
Mia nodded without hesitation. âYes.â
âYouâre not afraid Iâll⊠do something to you?â
âI looked into your records,â she said calmly. âBefore the apocalypse, you were a college student. No criminal history. After the world went to hell, sure, youâve been ruthlessâbut never abusive. Well⊠youâve bullied men, but never women.â
ââŠâ
âAlright,â Ethan said, rubbing his temple. âYou can tag along for now. But youâre still just a reserve. Whether you officially join the Fallen Star Squad depends on your performance.â
It wasnât that he didnât want her in the squad. She was beautiful, smart, and Awakenedâwhatâs not to like?
But their team was all guys. Bringing in a woman changed the dynamic. Could be good, could be bad. Heâd have to see how it played out.
If things went smoothly, heâd make it official later.
âGot it! Thanks, Captain!â Mia beamed, her whole face lighting up.
âLetâs go.â
Ethan turned and headed for the compound gates.
Inside, the place was buzzingâeveryone was packing up, prepping for the move.
As they walked, plenty of people greeted Mia along the way. Clearly, she was well-liked here.
Up on the third floor of one of the taller buildings, Zach and two other Majors stood by a window, watching the two of them leave.
They didnât go down to see them offâdidnât want to make a scene and risk making Ethan uncomfortable.
After all, if he could kill Mayor Marks in a Safe Zone with over a hundred thousand people, he could just as easily wipe them out here. No point playing games.
âZach, youâre really letting Mia go with them just like that?â one of the Majors asked. âWhat if something happens? How are you gonna explain that to Colonel Reyes in the afterlife?â
âWhat do you want me to do?â Zach said, arms crossed. âShe doesnât want to stay. You think we can force her?â
âI just donât get it. The compoundâs safe. Why would she choose to run around with those guys, risking her life?â
âWho knows? Maybe thatâs just how young people think. Honestly, those guys are strong. Following them might not be such a bad thing.â
âTheyâre strong, sure,â the older Major muttered. âBut theyâre brutal. Word is, they wiped out the entire Harlan familyâthousands of people.â
âItâs the apocalypse,â Zach said flatly. âYou think you can survive without being ruthless? If they werenât like that, they wouldnât have made it this far.â
âLetâs just hope we never end up on their bad side.â
âAs long as youâre not an idiot, you wonât.â
