CapĂtulo 1050: Everyone Gets Nine Chances
âEthan, this crystal core should go to you,â Henry said, handing over the glowing core.
Ethan waved it off with a grin. âWhatâs there to assign? Obviously, itâs going to Skinny Pete.â
âI knew it! I knew Captain would give it to me!â Skinny Pete beamed as he took the core.
âWe all knew heâd give it to you,â Sean said, his tone turning stern. âBut itâs one thing for the captain to assign it. Itâs another if you just help yourself. Got it?â
âGot it! I wasnât gonna use it without asking. Thatâs why I waited till we got back.â
âAlright, donât get too uptight,â Ethan said casually. âWeâre not buried in red tape here. Fallen Star Squad isnât that kind of team.â
âEven so,â Miles chimed in, âI think we should have some basic rules. For high-tier crystal cores like this, itâs better if youâre the one assigning them, Captain. Avoids any future drama.â
Ethan nodded. âFair enough.â
Then he turned to Skinny Pete. âGo ahead and advance to Stage D. Iâve been curious about your ability.â
âOn it!â
Skinny Pete sat down immediately and swallowed the crystal core.
Five minutes later, he opened his eyesâhis expression a little⊠off.
âWhatâs up? What ability did you get?â Chris asked, leaning in.
âWind-type. Wind Cutter,â Skinny Pete said.
âThatâs solid,â Chris nodded. âIâve felt that one before. Itâs strong.â
âI know the new skill,â Pete said, âbut the weird part is⊠my original ability. It feels like something new got added to it.â
âWhat kind of ability?â Chris asked, intrigued.
âI think⊠I can control animals now?â Skinny Pete said, uncertain.
â!!!â
âFor real!?â
Everyoneâs eyes went wideâeven Ethan looked surprised. If that was true, it was a game-changer.
âIâm not 100% sure, but thatâs what it feels like.â
âWanna try it on Pumpkin?â Chris suggested.
âLetâs not mess with Pumpkin,â Skinny Pete said, a little nervous. âWhat if I fry his brain or something?â
âThis kind of control might mess with the targetâs mind,â Ethan agreed. âLetâs not risk it. Tomorrow, weâll find a mutant beast outside and test it.â
âYeah, good call,â Pete nodded.
âJesus⊠if Iâd known your ability had this kind of potential, I wouldâve fought you for that core,â Big Mike said, staring at Pete with open envy.
Beast Control. If he could command a horde of mutant beasts, he could wipe out a city with a wave of his hand. Just thinking about it was terrifying.
âHeh, youâre the one who didnât want it back then,â Skinny Pete said smugly.
âSpecial-type abilities are way rarer than elemental ones,â Ethan said seriously. âNaturally, theyâve got more potential.â
He continued, âI think Iâm starting to figure some things out.â
âAbilities awakened before Stage D are Innate Abilities. They grow with you. Every time we light up a star in our constellation, the ability evolvesâeither getting stronger or branching into something new.â
âLike my True Sight evolved into Telekinesis. Skinny Peteâs Enthrallment evolved into Beast Control. For others like Sean and Chris, their abilities just got stronger.â
âBut once you hit Stage D, the ability you choose is an Acquired Ability. Maybe âskillâ is a better word. These donât evolveâtheyâre fixed attack methods.â
âIf Iâm right, every time we light up a star, we get to choose one skill. The later stars probably unlock stronger skills.â
âThe ones available at Stage D are mostly basicâFireball, Wind Cutter, stuff like that. So being weak at Stage D doesnât mean youâll stay weak.â
âIn theory, everyone gets nine chances to shape their destiny. Even if your early picks suck, one lucky pull later on could change everything.â
âYeah, Captain, that makes a lot of sense,â the others nodded, taking it in seriously.
âHoly shit⊠then youâre basically a god, Captain!â Big Mike said, eyes wide. âWeâre all rolling the dice, but you get to pick every timeânine times! You can just choose the best, most perfect skills for yourself!â
The others suddenly realized it too. One by one, they turned to Ethan, their eyes full of envy.
âUh⊠donât look at me like that,â Ethan said, scratching his head. âIâm your captain. Itâs normal for me to be a little stronger, right?â
âYeah⊠fair enough.â
âWait⊠whatâs that burning smell?â Garrick sniffed the air.
Everyone turned toward the kitchen.
âAhâsorry! I got too caught up listening,â Mia suddenly snapped back to reality and rushed into the kitchen.
Everything Ethan had just explained was completely new to her. Sheâd been so absorbed, she forgot she had food on the stove.
âCaptain⊠whoâs she?â someone finally asked, just now noticing the unfamiliar beauty in the house.
âNew team member,â Ethan replied simply.
âHaha, finally! Our bachelor squadâs got a female member!â someone cheered.
âRememberâsheâs a teammate. Donât get any ideas.â
âGot it, we get it,â the guys all nodded, though a few of them shot Ethan some suspicious looks.
âDinnerâs ready!â Mia called out, bringing out dish after dish and setting them on the table.
âSorry, I got distracted and burned the lasagna. Iâll eat that oneâyou guys can have the rest,â she said, a little embarrassed.
âIf itâs burnt, toss it. No point eating that,â Ethan said, walking over and dumping the lasagna straight into the trash.
Mia gave a helpless nod. Figures. This was the Fallen Star Squadâclearly, supplies werenât a problem here.
Everyone gathered around the table and dug in fast. Theyâd burned a lot of energy today.
âMmm⊠Mia, your cookingâs pretty damn good. Almost as good as Ethanâs,â Big Mike said, mouth full.
âThough honestly,â Skinny Pete added, âyou mightâve made a bit too little. I donât think this is gonna fill us up.â
âAh, sorry. Iâm not used to cooking for this many people. Iâll make more next time,â Mia said, a little flustered.
After over a month of apocalypse living, sheâd gotten used to rationing. Who wouldâve thought this place was so well-stocked?
âEthan, when are we heading back to the hometown?â Chris asked. He already had a bad feeling, but he still wanted to go back and see for himself.
âIn a couple days,â Ethan said. âOnce the others hit Tier 6, I should be close to Tier 7. Then weâll move out.â
âYouâre almost Tier 7!?â Mia stared at him, stunned.
âWhatâs with the shock? This is the Fallen Star Squad. Thatâs pretty normal around here.â
ââŠâ
âCaptain, whatâs your hometown like? Think itâs a good spot to build a compound?â Miles asked.
âItâs surrounded by mountains on all sides. Whole countyâs population is under three hundred thousand. Honestly, itâs a great location.â
âThen why donât we just set up a compound there?â Miles suggested.
âThatâs the plan,â Ethan nodded. âBut after checking out two compounds today, I noticed a lot of issues. Weâll build oneâbut weâre keeping it small. Quality over quantity.â
âToo many people just means more problems. Resources get stretched thin. Right now, Iâve got enough supplies to raise two thousand completely powerless people to Tier 4 Enhanced. So weâll start with around two thousand.â
âBut recruitment is based on character, not strength,â Ethan added firmly.
âUnderstood!â Miles said with a nod.
âAlright, letâs eat. Miles, Iâve got a surprise for you tonight.â
âA surprise?â Miles looked curious, but mostly excited.
âYouâll see when the time comes.â
âLooking forward to it.â
