Chapter 1064: Move
âUm⊠can I ask something?â Chris suddenly spoke up, unable to hold it in any longer. âThis compound youâre talking aboutâdoes it have someone named Joe Walker?â
âJoe Walker?â The older man from earlierâGeorgeâblinked in surprise. âYou mean Old Joe?â
âYou know him?!â Chris rushed forward, grabbing George by the shoulders, eyes wide with hope.
âUh⊠there is someone in the compound named Joe,â George said, a little startled. âBut I donât know if heâs the one youâre looking for.â
âCan you tell me how old he is? What he looks like?â Chris asked carefully, trying to keep his voice steady.
âNow that you mention it⊠you actually kinda look like him,â George said, squinting. âYou wouldnât happen to be his son, would you?â
âYes! I am! Iâm his son!â Chris said, his voice trembling with excitement. âSo my dadâs really in the compound?â
âHeââ
âGeorge!â Harris suddenly barked, cutting him off.
Boom!
A dull thud echoed across the field as Harrisâs body was sent flying.
Pfftâ
He hit the ground hard, coughing up blood, eyes wide with shock as he stared at Ethan, who stood where heâd been a second ago.
âSay another word,â Ethan said coldly, âand you die.â
Heâd already been patient with this guy. But Harris just kept pushing.
âHarris!â the others shouted, rushing over to help him up. Their eyes burned with anger as they looked at Ethan.
But Harris, to his credit, wasnât completely stupid. He waved them off, signaling not to escalate.
Chris turned back to George, trying to stay calm. âItâs okay. Donât worry about him. Just tell meâwhat happened to my dad?â
George glanced at Harris, saw no objection, then sighed. âOld Joeâs definitely in the compound. Heâs a good manâhelped a lot of people. But⊠he got on the wrong side of the higher-ups. Stuck his nose where they didnât want it. Now heâs not doing so well.â
ââŠ!!â
Chrisâs heart clenched. âWhat about my mom?â
âI havenât seen her,â George said, shaking his head. âFar as I know, he came in alone.â
ââŠ!!â
Chris took a deep breath, steadying himself. âWhere is this compound?â
George hesitated.
But then Harris, still wiping blood from his mouth, suddenly spoke up. âTell them.â
George gave him a puzzled look but nodded. âItâs at the old high school in Pine Hollow. They converted it into a compound.â
âGot it.â Chris nodded, then turned to Ethan.
âLetâs go,â Ethan said.
The group headed back to their cars.
As they were about to leave, George stumbled over, calling out, âHey, kid! If youâre really going to the compound, listen to meâif you want to stay alive, donât mess with Knoxâs people. Whatever they tell you to do, just do it.â
âGot it,â Ethan replied casually, not even turning around.
The engines roared to life, and the cars rolled out toward town.
George watched them go, then turned to Harris, still confused. âHarris⊠whyâd you change your mind and tell them?â
âYou think they wouldnât have found it anyway?â Harris said, brushing dirt off his clothes.
âWell⊠yeah, I guess.â
Harris stared after the retreating vehicles, something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
He hadnât told them to protect the compound. He just didnât want to see another group of young people walk into that place and end up like them.
But now⊠now he wasnât so sure.
These people werenât ordinary.
Maybeâjust maybeâtheyâd be the ones to change things.
âCome on,â he said. âLetâs head back.â
âBut we havenât finished the task yet.â
âWeâll deal with it later.â
ââŠAlright.â
Pine Hollow â inside a small compound still under construction.
The place was buzzing with activity. Dozens of men were hard at work, hauling materials, hammering frames, and reinforcing barricades.
A middle-aged man in his forties had just slung a heavy bag of cement over his shoulder and was about to move whenâthudâanother sack landed hard on top of it, nearly buckling his knees.
He staggered but clenched his jaw and forced himself upright.
âCome on, Joe. Two bags already got you wobbling? I was about to toss you a third,â a young man nearby sneered.
âCareful, man. Donât crush him. Weâre still short on labor around here. If you kill him, Knoxâll have our asses.â
âI know, I know. Just two bags. Heâll live.â
âStill, kinda sucks for the guy. Shouldâve kept his mouth shut. Pissed off Blake for no reason.â
âYeah, in a world crawling with zombies, best to mind your own damn business.â
Joe said nothing. He just limped forward, dragging his broken body toward the construction site, both bags of cement weighing him down.
Crack!
A whip lashed across his back, the sound sharp and cruel.
âMove it! Quit dragging your damn feet!â barked a cold voice behind him.
Joe didnât respond. He just gritted his teeth and kept going, refusing to fall.
Up close, it was clearâhis leg was crippled, and one of his arms hung uselessly at his side, clearly broken.
The overseers didnât care. They lashed him whenever they felt like it, and Joe took it all in silence.
Around him, the other workers glanced over with pity in their eyes. But none of them dared speak up. The last few who tried had been whipped too. Now, no one said a word.
Joe finally reached the site and dropped the cement with a grunt, already turning to go back for more.
âOld Joe,â a nearby worker mixing cement whispered, âwhy donât you sneak a break? Youâre gonna collapse at this rate.â
âYou think theyâd let me?â
âDamn it, man⊠why couldnât you just keep your head down?â
âItâs done,â Joe said quietly. âNo point regretting it now. If it werenât for my boy, Iâd have joined his mother a long time ago.â
âHey, Joe! You slacking off again?â a young man shouted, spotting them.
He stormed over, whip already in hand.
âI told you not to chat!â
âI told you not to slack!â
The young man lashed out, each strike harder than the last.
He was enjoying this.
Joe was one of the few people Knox had specifically told them to âkeep an eye onââwhich really meant: make his life hell.
Now that he had an excuse, he wasnât holding back.
Joeâs back was quickly torn open, blood soaking through his shirt.
âStop! Youâll kill him!â the worker whoâd spoken to Joe tried to intervene.
âWhat, you want a taste too?â
âN-NoâŠâ
âThen shut it and get lost.â
The man backed off, helpless, watching as Joe writhed on the ground, trying to shield himself from the blows.
But the young man didnât stop. He kept whipping him, over and over.
As long as he didnât kill him, it was all fair game.
âŠ
Outside the compound, two vehicles pulled up and came to a stop.
Nine people stepped out.
âThis should be the place,â Ethan said, eyes scanning the perimeter.
âLetâs go in,â Chris said, barely able to contain himself.
Ethan nodded, then instinctively activated [True Sight]to get a read on what was happening inside.
The moment his vision pierced the compound walls, he froze.
He saw someone being beatenâwhipped mercilessly on the ground.
And the manâs faceâŠ
Fury exploded in Ethanâs chest.
âMove!!â he barked.
