Chapter 1127: This Was Never Random
âBut⊠I already promised my squad captain Iâd return. I canât go back on my word,â Emily said, clearly torn.
âIâll talk to your captain myself,â Henry said firmly. âFrom now on, youâre staying with Fallen Star Squad. No discussion.â
It was a rare display of authority from himâat least, rare outside of combat. But here, in front of his sister, Henry sounded different. More forceful. More decisive.
Even Ethan raised an eyebrow. It wasnât the Henry they were used to.
âHenry, come with me,â Ethan said suddenly, then turned and walked toward the backyard.
âOkay,â Henry replied quickly, following without question. The others stayed behind, quietly giving them space.
Out in the backyard, Ethan lowered his voice. âYour sister told you about your parents, right?â
âYeah.â Henry nodded, expression sinking at once. Grief flickered across his face.
âDid anything about it feel⊠off to you?â
âOff?â Henry looked confused. âEthan, did you notice something?â
âI did,â Ethan said quietly. âI donât think what happened to your parents was random.â
Henry frowned.
âIn the apocalypse, everything revolves around survival and profit,â Ethan continued. âYour folks didnât have supplies. They didnât have enemies. So why would a group of people suddenly jump out and kill two defenseless civiliansâon a public roadâon their way to a compound? Not even bandits are that reckless. And if it was about⊠well, attraction to your sister, they wouldnât try anything that bold in the open, especially that close to a secure zone.â
Henryâs face darkened as realization started to creep in. He hadnât thought about it like that beforeâbut yeah. It did seem off.
âI also asked your sister,â Ethan went on. âShe said she had to use her ability on the way here. She used it in the open.â
Henryâs expression sharpened instantly. âYou think someone saw what she could doâand set it all up to grab her?â
âYeah. Whoever was behind it sent in expendables.â Ethanâs voice dropped to a near-whisper. âAll those thugs that attacked? Heard they were wiped out. Their skills were decent at bestâpawns, probably.â
Henryâs jaw tightened. âSo who was pulling the strings?â
âAsk yourselfâwho benefited the most?â
Henry clenched his fists. âSilverfox Squad.â
Ethan nodded. âWhen I tried to bring your sister with me, their captain and a few of their higher-ups reacted⊠off. At first, I figured they were just upset I was taking their healer. But thinking back, their faces didnât just show worry. There was fear.â
Henryâs eyes narrowed, fury building behind them. âSo they really are hiding something.â
âItâs just a theory for now,â Ethan said. âBut Iâll push the military to investigate it tomorrow. With their reach, somethingâs bound to surface.â
âGot it,â Henry said, voice clipped.
The two of them returned to the living room. Chris and the others were chatting in one corner, while Emily and Mia were in the kitchen, cooking together.
Ethan blinked. âWait⊠your sister cooks?â
âOf course she does,â Henry said, a little proud now. âBack when we were kids and my parents werenât home, she made dinner for me all the time.â
âNice,â Ethan said with a grin. âGuess I donât have to cook around here anymore.â
As they crossed the room, Chris popped up with a welcoming smile. âHey, Henry! Come on, sit down. Got some water for you.â
Henry took the glass without sitting yet, suspicious. âThanks⊠What do you want?â
Chris looked innocent. âNothing. Just curiousâhow close would you say we are as friends?â
Henry didnât miss a beat. âAs long as youâre not thinking about my sister? Weâre best buds.â
Chrisâs grin faltered. ââŠWow. Ice cold, dude.â
Henry squinted. âWait. No freaking way. You are thinking about my sister?â
Chris held up his hands fast. âRelax. Youâre overreacting.â
Henry kept staring. âSo youâre not?â
Chris offered a noncommittal shrug. âLook, all Iâm saying is⊠I already told the guys to stay away from her.â
Henry narrowed his eyes. âSo now youâre what, claiming territorial rights?â
âIâm protecting her,â Chris replied, stone serious. âAnd if some random guy shows up and makes a move, I canât guarantee I wonât âaccidentallyâ stab him in the back.â
ââŠâ
Ethan gave Chris a long look and sighed. âAnd people wondered why you were the only one with a girlfriend back in the dorm.â
Henry just stared at Chris, completely speechless.
It wasnât that Henry disliked Chrisâfar from it. He just couldnât wrap his head around the idea of one of his buddies turning into his brother-in-law. That mental image was asking too much.
âThatâs up to my sister,â Henry said. âWho she likes is her business. Besides, itâs the apocalypse now. Whoâs got the time or energy to think about romance?â
âFair,â Chris said thoughtfully. âBut what if she ends up falling for Ethan? Wouldnât that lead to a full-blown catfight between her and Mia?â
ââŠâ
âWhy am I suddenly in this equation?â Ethan asked, deadpan.
âIâm just saying!â Chris held up his hands again.
Henry shot him a look, but Chris leaned in, suddenly serious. âListen, man. Iâm being real with you. You gotta manage this right. If we start getting all twisted up over relationships, itâll mess with team cohesion.â
âThis part heâs not wrong about,â Ethan said, his tone switching from amused to firm. âLet me be clear: No matter what, no drama over emotions or romance. Anyone who stirs up conflict in the squad over thisâIâll deal with them personally. Harshly.â
âRelax, Captain,â Big Mike chimed in, snickering. âWeâre in the damn end times. Strength and survival come first. Only someone like this walking pile of feelings,â he jabbed a thumb at Chris, âwould still be dreaming about love. No wonder he got cheated on.â
âBig Mikeâswear to God, you bring that up one more time, and I will throw hands!â
âWhat, canât even take a joke? Can get cheated on but canât get roasted?â
ââŠâ
Ethan clapped his hands. âAlright, thatâs enough. Chrisâthis stuff takes time. Focus on leveling up first. Everyone else, just keep some boundaries, got it?â
âGot it,â Chris muttered.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the two women were deep in their own conversation.
âMia, youâre seriously stunning,â Emily gushed, wide-eyed. âLike, prettier than most actresses I used to see on TV. And your figureâhow is it that perfect?â
Mia laughed lightly. âCome on, youâre the one whoâs pretty. Didnât you see the way Chris was staring at you? Guy practically had stars in his eyes. Compare that to how they look at meâtotally indifferent.â
âMaybe theyâre just so used to you, their eyes got tired of being blessed,â Emily said with a grin. âIf you stepped outside, every guy would be looking your way.â
Mia just shook her head.
âIn a world like this,â she said softly, âstanding out too much isnât a good thing. If your strength doesnât match your beauty, that attention turns dangerous. If I hadnât lucked into joining Fallen Star Squad⊠I honestly wouldnât mind being less attractive.â
Emily nodded deeply. âYeah⊠I get it.â
âBut donât worry,â Mia added. âYouâre part of Fallen Star Squad now. No one hereâs gonna dare cross the line. Do whatever you want, wear whatever you likeâyouâre safe.â
âThanks.â Emily gave a small, grateful smile.
After a pause, she asked curiously, âMia⊠seriously, youâre gorgeous, and this squadâs all guys. Are you telling me none of them have tried anything?â
Mia smiled faintly. âWeâre teammates. That kind of thought doesnât come up.â
Of course, she knew exactly why, but she didnât feel the need to explain. It was better this way. She hadnât come to Fallen Star Squad for romance. She was here to grow strongerânothing else.
âI see⊠Then I guess they really are different from other guys. No wonder theyâre so strong.â
âAnyway, foodâs done,â Mia said, wiping her hands. âLetâs go call the others.â
âOkay!â
