CapĂtulo 1208: The Warning from General Cross
Ryan led Ethan and the others into a private meeting room tucked inside that cluster of luxurious buildings.
General Maxwell Kane was already inside, sitting there with a cup of coffee, like heâd been waiting for them.
The moment Ethanâs group walked in, Maxwell stood up immediately.
âGlad you could make it. Sitâplease.â He gestured warmly at the chairs across from him.
Ethan and the others were honestly a little stunned to see himâbecause they knew who he was.
Not âknewâ personally, obviously. More like⊠there were very few people in the entire Atlas Federation who wouldnât recognize him.
Maxwell Kane was the highest commander in the Atlas Federationâs militaryâa marshal whoâd built a mountain of achievements for the federation. Before the apocalypse, his face had been all over TV and the internet.
âGeneral Maxwell Kane, itâs an honor,â Ethan said. Even his tone turned polite in front of someone like this.
Maxwell chuckled. âNo need for formalities. That was a long time ago. Just call me Maxwell.â
âAlright⊠Maxwell.â Ethan nodded.
Maxwellâs relaxed attitude made him immediately easy to like.
After everyone sat, Maxwell poured tea for them himself as he spoke.
âYou entered the compound today?â
âYeah. Not long ago.â
âAnd you came on flying mounts?â
Ethan paused for half a beat, then nodded anyway. âWe did.â
âI know about you,â Maxwell said with a smile. âYouâre Ethan, right?â
âYou know my name?â Ethan blinked, then a thought hit him. âWait⊠General Cross?â
âMm. Cross is an old subordinate of mine.â Maxwell nodded. âHe mentioned, in passing, that there was a group of extremely capable young people in his compound. That should be you.â
ââŠSo General Cross canât keep his mouth shut either,â Ethan said, a little helpless.
âDonât misunderstand.â Maxwell waved it off. âHe only brought it up while we were talking. He didnât spill much at all.â
Maxwellâs expression shifted into something like admiration.
âThat manâs tight-lipped. Even when I asked as his old commander, he refused to say more. He only gave me your nameâand warned me that if I ever ran into you, I should never pick a fight with you.â
He let out a breath, half amused, half serious.
âI thought he was exaggerating. After seeing you in person, I realized his warning was completely right.â
âYouâre flattering me.â Ethan scratched his nose, awkward.
âIâm not.â Maxwellâs eyes sharpened, deadly sincere. âThe instant I saw you, I knew that if you decided to make a move, Iâd die. And the entire compound wouldnât be able to save me.â
He tapped the table lightly, as if emphasizing the point.
âMy instincts donât miss. Thatâs something you get after walking the edge between life and death more times than you can count.â
At those words, Ryanâs eyes widened. He immediately looked at Ethanâs group with full, wary focus.
Ethan put on his most harmless expression. âYouâre making it sound scary. We donât go around attacking people for no reason.â
âI believe that,â Maxwell said, nodding. âSoâwhat brings you to Atlas City?â
Ethan didnât bother circling. âWe heard Atlas City has a special spatial world. We got curious, so we came to take a look.â
âSo thatâs it.â Maxwell nodded, and Ethan could see the tension easing from his shoulders. As long as they werenât here to cause trouble, it was fine.
âAtlas City does have one. Itâs sealed off right now, but if you want to see it, I can have Ryan take you there.â
âThen Iâll be bothering you.â Ethanâs mood lifted immediately. He honestly hadnât expected things to go this smoothly.
âItâs no troubleâsmall matter.â Maxwell paused, then added bluntly, âBut Iâll say this upfront: weâve swept that space many times. If youâre going in hoping to find treasure, you probably wonât find much left.â
âThatâs fine,â Ethan said. âWeâre just curious. We want to see what a special spatial world looks like.â
âFair.â Maxwellâs face grew heavier. âItâs worth seeing. You may run into more of them later. Honestly, I suspect that after the apocalypse, a lot of these special spaces appeared on Earth. I just donât know if thatâs a good thing or a bad thing.â
âWhy do you say that?â Ethan asked. âIs there something alive in there?â
âNo,â Maxwell said. Then his eyes narrowed, like he was staring through the wall at something far away. âBut I have a feelingâsome spaces might have living things.â
âAnd if they do, their strength could be terrifying.â
He spoke slowly, each word weighed.
âWe can enter those spaces. That means whatever lives in those spaces could also come out onto Earth.â
âWhen that happens⊠Iâm not sure we can hold.â
Worry crept across his face.
Ethan leaned back slightly. âWhy think that far ahead? At least right now, it hasnât happened. All we can do is deal with whatâs in front of us.â
Maxwell stared at him for a second, then laughed softly, as if Ethan had pulled him back from spiraling.
âYouâre right. The apocalypse is already hereâwhat else is there to be afraid of? Problem comes, we solve it. Worrying early doesnât change anything.â
His expression loosened again.
Ethan hesitated, then asked anyway, curiosity winning out. âSo⊠Maxwell. What kind of good stuff did you guys get out of that special space?â
âUhâŠâ
Maxwell clearly hadnât expected Ethan to be that direct. For a moment, he didnât seem to know how to answer.
âIf itâs inconvenient to say, forget it.â Ethan shook his head.
âItâs not that I canât say.â Maxwell hesitated, then answered honestly. âItâs just⊠mostly weapons, books, technical documents, and special materialsâthings beyond our current understanding. Right now itâs only being researched by internal personnel. Nothingâs been released to the public yet.â
âOh.â Ethanâs interest spiked immediately. âSo there really is a lot of good stuff in there. Come on, Ryanâtake us over. Iâm kind of dying to see it.â
Ryan looked to Maxwell. After Maxwell gave a small nod, Ryan said, âAlright. Follow me.â
He led Ethan and the others out of the room.
After they left, Maxwell sat there thinking for a moment. Then he picked up the phone, found General Crossâs number, and dialed.
MeanwhileâŠ
Victoria stormed back home in a fury and found Alexander Hale resting inside.
âGrandpa, someone bullied me!â Victoria grabbed Alexanderâs hand and whined, acting spoiled.
âOh?â Alexander chuckled, indulgent, and patted her head. âTell Grandpaâwhat idiot has the guts to bully my precious Victoria?â
âItâs that arrogant guy I told you aboutâthe one I ran into in Clearford City. Heâs in Atlas City now. And he bullied me again just now!â Victoria said, livid.
âHm?â
Alexanderâs casual expression vanished. His brows drew together sharply.
âYou mean the person you ran into in Clearford City⊠came to Atlas City?â
âYeah! Itâs him!â
Alexanderâs face darkened.
His son Leonard had been killed in Goldcrest City. That wound had never closedâit was a thorn lodged deep in his heart. And the intel from Goldcrest City had already confirmed it: one of the killers was the same person Victoria had run into back in Clearford City.
Alexander had originally planned to wait until this upcoming conference ended, then personally go to Clearford City and demand General Cross hand the man over.
He hadnât expected the bastard to walk right into Atlas City on his own.
âHah. Big guts.â Alexanderâs voice went cold with rage. âHe killed my son and still dares come to Atlas City? So he really doesnât take the Hale family seriously.â
He turned to the chief steward standing nearby.
âGo bring Dominic back.â
âYes, sir!â
