CapĂtulo 1224: One Man Can Change a City
By the time Ethan and the others reached the Kane Familyâs residence, Maxwell Kane still wasnât back.
No surprise. With the compound turning upside down today, he definitely had his hands full.
But Ryan and his sister Aurora were home.
The second Ryan saw Ethanâs group walk in, his hands started sweating. The calm, steady soldier from yesterday was goneânow he looked like a man trying very hard not to panic in his own living room.
Aurora, on the other hand, strode up immediately.
âEthan, youâre here!â she said, practically glowing. âCome inâplease!â
Her eyes were full of raw admiration.
Aurora had grown up in a military family. Sheâd worshiped strength since she was a kid. Her father Maxwell had always been her number-one idol⊠but after seeing Ethanâs group on the battlefield todayâso dominant, so decisiveâMaxwell suddenly didnât feel quite as untouchable.
Maxwell was strong, sure. But he had too much to consider. Too many chains.
These people didnât.
They ignored rules, struck without hesitation, and even against a top-tier family like the Hales, they wiped them out like it was just another job. And an enormous place like Atlas City couldnât do a damn thing about it.
To Aurora, that was what a true powerhouse looked like.
They sat down.
Aurora didnât even wait for tea. âEthanâare you recruiting? What about me? Iâll do anything. Just let me join.â
ââŠ..â
âAurora!â Ryan shot her a look, then turned back to Ethan, mortified. âSorry, Ethan. Thatâs my sister, Aurora. She can be⊠a little impulsive.â
âItâs fine.â Ethan chuckled. âYour sisterâs⊠pretty cute.â
Compared to Victoria, Aurora was a breath of fresh airâno princess attitude at all.
Same background, totally different vibe. Family environment mattered. And it was obvious Maxwell had raised Ryan and Aurora with a tight hand.
Aurora leaned forward, eyes shining. âSo? Do I have a chance?â
âNo.â Ethan shook his head. âOur minimum standard is Awakened, and the ability has to be seriously strong.â
ââŠ..â
Aurora visibly deflated.
Even Ryan looked a little speechless. That âminimum standardâ probably ruled out 99.999% of the country.
Aurora coughed and tried to salvage her pride. âFine, but even if Iâm not Awakened, my Tier 6 ability is really strong!â
Ethan activated [True Sight] and gave her an easy once-over. He actually looked mildly surprised, then nodded.
âGravity Manipulation. Thatâs not bad at all.â
Auroraâs eyes went huge. âHow do you know that?!â
Big Mike puffed up like he was taking credit. âOur captain can not only tell what ability you haveâhe can tell what color underwear youâre wearing.â
ââŠ!â
Ethan shot him a look. âIf you donât talk, nobodyâs gonna think youâre mute.â
Aurora didnât even seem to register Big Mikeâs comment. She was still staring at Ethan like he was the answer key to the universe.
âEthan, then do I really have no hope?â
âNope.â Ethan shook his head again. âIf youâre not Awakened, you donât get into Fallen Star Squad.â
Technically, Ethan could transfer abilities. But the squad was already full in his mind, and he wasnât planning to expand it right now.
One more person meant one more share of resources. That slowed everyoneâs growth.
Unless he ran into an Awakened that truly made his eyes light up, it wasnât worth it.
Auroraâs Tier 6 skill was solidâbut Tier 6 abilities didnât grow or mutate the way Innate Abilities could. The ceiling was the ceiling.
âOkayâŠâ Aurora sighed. But she was the upbeat typeâshe recovered fast, sliding over to Mia and Emily to chat like nothing happened.
Ryan let out a quiet breath, then said to Ethan, âI already had someone notify my father. He should be back soon. Letâs wait for him.â
âWorks for me.â Ethan nodded.
They chatted casually for a bit. Before long, Maxwell hurried back.
âEthanâmy apologies, seriously. I got swamped and kept you waiting.â
âItâs fine, General Kane.â Ethan smiled. âIf you werenât busy today, thatâd be the weird part.â
Maxwell gave a helpless look, then turned. âRyanâhave the chef start serving.â
âGot it!â
Maxwell glanced back at Ethan. âDrink?â
He nodded toward a cabinet. âIâve got a few bottles of rare bourbon. Not exactly easy to find these days.â
âSure.â Ethan nodded. âIâll have some.â
With a lot of things settled, there was no need to stay wound up 24/7. It was okay to relax a little.
Soon, dish after dish hit the table. Maxwell brought out his prized bottles and poured everyone a glass.
Chris and the others raised their cups.
Only Mia and Emily didnât drink.
Partly because they werenât drinkersâbut more importantly, because someone always needed to stay sharp.
Emilyâs [Cleanse] could detox and also sober people up. Miaâs crowd control could buy them time if anything went sideways.
As long as those two stayed clear-headed, everyone else could drink without worry.
After a few rounds, the real conversation finally surfaced.
âEthan,â Maxwell said seriously, âI looked into what happened today. Iâm pretty sure someone deliberately targeted you.â
âI know,â Ethan said calmly, popping a bite of foie gras topped with caviar into his mouth.
âThe Hale Family was a threat.â
âSo I eliminated them.â
ââŠâ
Maxwell exhaled, tension easing out of his shoulders. âGood. I was honestly worried youâd take it out on the entire compound.â
âNot really,â Ethan said. âBut I do think Atlas Cityâs whole structure needs to change.â
Maxwellâs eyes narrowed. âWhat do you mean?â
âThe Five Families sharing power isnât good for development,â Ethan said bluntly. âI suggest you, General Kaneâyou take control of the compound.â
Maxwell nearly choked. âEthanâdonât say things like that casually.â
âIâm not.â Ethanâs tone stayed matter-of-fact. âFive families means five agendas. Five sets of private interests. You want stability? Stop splitting authority.â
Maxwell rubbed his forehead. âI wonât pretend unified management wouldnât be better. But the families wonât accept it. Everyone thinks they deserve the chair. Unifying them isnât that easy.â
Ethan looked at him. âDo you want to run it or not?â
Maxwell didnât hesitate. âYes.â
âThen thatâs it.â Ethan set his glass down. âYou take over. Anyone who disagreesâIâll go âvisitâ their home. Iâm sure theyâll come around.â
ââŠâ
It was a decision that could reshape Atlas City, and they were discussing it like they were picking appetizers.
Maxwell gave a crooked smile, half bitter, half resigned. âIâll⊠talk to them tomorrow.â
âWhatâs there to talk about?â Ethan said. âTomorrow, call them into the conference room. Iâll handle it.â
ââŠâ
Maxwell stared at him for a long second, then finally sighed. âAlright. Letâs eat.â
After dinner, Ethan and the others headed out.
Maxwell had already arranged a large mansion for them near the Kane Familyâs area. No need to go back to their previous place.
Ethan wasnât about to be polite about it. Their old lodging had been decent, sureâbut it wasnât a mansion.
When they arrived, everyone was immediately satisfied. It wasnât on the level of the custom-built setup back in Fallen Star City, but it was even bigger than the mansion theyâd had in Clearford City.
That was the perk of being strong.
Wherever you went, you got special treatment.
