CapĂtulo 1268: Then We Take a Bigger One
Ethan walked over to Marekâs corpse and looked down at what was leftâonly half a body. He shook his head.
No crystal core.
Just like them, Marek had a constellation map in his mind instead. That meant the body wasnât worth anything except as feed for mutant beasts.
Zombies and mutant beastsâthose kinds of mutated creaturesâformed a crystal core in their heads after mutation. It automatically absorbed mysterious energy and strengthened them over time.
Humans, on the other hand, leveled up by lighting the stars on the constellation map inside their minds. Which meant Marek was probably human too⊠or at least a high-intelligence species close enough.
No wonder he could speak.
Humans could eat crystal cores to boost their strength fast.
Zombies and mutant beasts could speed up their growth by eating corpses.
The two paths were similar. The main difference was that crystal cores were condensed energyâso you got power immediatelyâwhile eating corpses required digestion and time.
But that didnât mean humans had some guaranteed advantage.
Because crystal cores were so concentrated, you couldnât use them across too big a gap.
A Tier 14 human couldnât touch a Tier 16 crystal coreâtry it and the energy would blow their body apart. Instant death.
Even a Tier 15 crystal core had to wait until you hit the peak of Tier 14, so you could break through in one shot. Use it too early, and it would cause irreversible damage.
That was one of those unwritten rules humanity had already learned the hard way over the last half year.
Mutant beasts didnât have that restriction.
The stronger the corpse, the better it was for them. If the gap was too large, they could just eat less at a time.
Theyâd digest slowly, finish, then eat more.
If a mutant beast got its hands on a corpse far beyond its current level, it could nibble and digest over timeâand by the time it finished, its strength would skyrocket.
So each side had its own advantages. No clear âbetter,â just different.
Miles came up beside Ethan. âCaptain⊠do we even rebuild this place? Or do we just move everything to Harrison City?â
Ethan looked over the Fallen Star City ruins. His mood was sour enough to bite through steel.
âHowâs the Harrison City compound coming?â
âBarely started,â Miles said.
âThen forget it.â Ethanâs eyes narrowed. âTell them to stop building. Weâre moving into the Silverlake City compound.â
Miles blinked. âYou meanâŠ?â
âThey smashed our compound,â Ethan said flatly. âSo weâll take a bigger one.â
He jerked his chin toward the wreckage, then continued, voice steady. âSilverlake City is a major city. Itâs the state capital of Golden Delta. Itâs better than Harrison City in every wayâand itâs not even that far. We can take it over instead of wasting time building from scratch.â
He looked at Miles. âOnce youâre there, expand it however you want.â
Miles nodded hard. âYeah. That works.â
âBring Fallen Star Guard back,â Ethan said. âTomorrow, we go together. Itâs time to let everyone else see what Fallen Star City can really doâso every stray dog doesnât think they can come here and start shit.â
âGot it.â Milesâs eyes were sharp. âAnd while theyâre at it, they can clean up whatâs left here.â
Ethan gave a short nod. âAlsoâGrace and the others are at Harrison City, right? Call them back too.â
âWill do.â
Off to the side, under Henryâs treatment, the remaining five white-furred apes finally had their injuries stabilized.
Their wounds were healing⊠but their condition was still awful.
Their leader, Blizzard, was dead. Two more of their companions were dead too. Only five were left.
Of course they looked like hell.
The bond between them ran deeper than most humans could understand.
Skinny Pete didnât try to take control of the others.
Those apes had done a lot for Fallen Star City. Now that Blizzard was gone, the plan was to give the survivors their freedom. If they wanted to leave, theyâd be allowed to.
In the end, the white-furred apes didnât go.
Since coming out of that world, theyâd lived here. Fallen Star Cityâs people had treated them wellâalways sharing grilled meat, always feeding them first.
The apes werenât dumb. They knew who was kind to them and who wasnât.
They were devastated, sure.
But they werenât abandoning this place.
Not long after, more than twenty thousand people finally returned.
The moment they saw Fallen Star Cityâalmost nothing but rubbleâevery last one of them froze, eyes stretched wide.
As the few remaining people whoâd stayed behind explained what happenedâeveryone talking at once, voices overlappingâthe shock turned into something hotter.

Faces tightened.
Hands clenched.
And fury spread through the crowd until it felt like the whole ruined city was burning.
Compared to Ethan and the othersâwho were constantly away from the compoundâthe Fallen Star Guardâs attachment to Fallen Star City ran a lot deeper.
Now that the place theyâd lived in was nothing but rubble, plenty of them couldnât hold it in anymore. Guys whoâd survived hell without blinking were standing there with tears on their faces.
âCommander, we canât just let this go!â someone shouted, eyes red. âThey destroyed Fallen Star Cityâthen we wipe their compound off the map!â
âYeah! Flatten their compound!â
Ethan looked at the Fallen Star Guardâtwo-plus thousand pairs of bloodshot eyes, fists clenched whiteâand nodded.
âAlright. Rest up tonight. Tomorrow, Iâll take you there and weâll level their compound.â
âLetâs go!â
âThatâs our Commander!â
The roar that answered him shook the ruins.
âGood,â Ethan said. âNow clean up the bodies, and pack up anything important thatâs left. We move out tomorrow.â
âYes!â
Fallen Star Guard immediately got to work.
Disposing of the corpses was simple: burn them.
With over twenty thousand people, there was no shortage of fire-type abilities. The flames spread fast, turning the battlefield into a sea of smoke and heat.
Atlas City, the compoundâŠ
Maxwell hung up the phone, his expression⊠complicated.
The others in the conference room tensed up immediately.
âWhat now, General Kane?â someone asked. âWhat happened this time?â
In this era, even a rumor could make your heart stutter.
âGarrett led thirty thousand high-Tier Enhanced to Fallen Star City,â Maxwell said slowly. âThey were completely wiped out. Not a single one survived. And one of them was a being from the Void Realm.â
âWhat?!â Everyoneâs eyes widened.
âIs Garrettâs head full of rocks?â someone blurted. âHe dared go after Fallen Star City? Thatâs Yang the Banditâs home turf!â
âFrom what we heard,â Maxwell continued, âhe relied on a Void Realm powerhouse accompanying him and tried to pick a fight with Ethan. He didnât expect Ethan to cut that Void Realm powerhouse down with his own hands. After that, the whole force got buried with him.â
âJesusâŠâ Gabrielâs eyes went huge. âBased on the footage Silverlake City sent over, those Void Realm guys were at least Tier 17 or Tier 18, right? And Ethan still killed one?â
âSo our guess was right,â another person said, voice tight. âThat figure in Nova City really was him. Itâs insane. Same starting lineâhow did he get that far ahead? To the point where even Void Realm powerhouses arenât his match?â
Arthur leaned forward, curiosity getting the better of him. âGeneral Kaneâyour daughter Aurora called you just now, right? Sheâs with them. Can you ask her how Fallen Star Squadâs strength is rising so fast?â
Maxwell shot him a flat look. âDonât even think about it. She knows what she can say and what she canât. Donât drag her into trouble.â
Arthur coughed, embarrassed. âI was just asking.â
Charlesâs brows were drawn tight. âEthanâs strength is terrifying. But his methods are brutal too. Thirty thousand high-Tier Enhancedâhe killed them all.â
âYou know what heâs like,â Maxwell said, rubbing his temple. âHeâs the kind of guy who doesnât go looking for trouble, but he sure as hell doesnât swallow it either. If someone provokes him, thatâs just asking to die.â
He paused, then added, voice turning heavier.
âAnd you think thatâs the end of it?â
Charles stared. âWhat else is he planning?â
âHeâs taking people to attack Silverlake City compound tomorrow.â
âWhat?!â Chairs scraped. Several people shot to their feet at once.
âNo!â someone blurted. âSilverlake City compound has over two million people! The Atlas Federationâs population is already thinâif he keeps killing like this, we wonât even need zombies. Heâll wipe us out himself!â
âYeah,â Gabriel said, and for once even he couldnât stay neutral. âGeneral Kane, we have to talk him down. Silverlake City compound is an innocent victim here. They didnât participate in any of this.â
âYou think I donât know that?â Maxwell snapped, then immediately sounded tired. âIâm the one losing sleep over it. But you all know his temper. Heâs furious right now. Iâm not exactly eager to go stick my head under his boot.â
âThis is on Garrett,â Charles said, anger boiling over. âThat bastard deserves to die ten times over!â
âBlaming Garrett doesnât solve tomorrow,â Arthur said, frowning. âWe need a way to stop this.â
âWe canât stop it,â Maxwell said flatly. âEthan already announced it in public. At best, we figure out how to get him to kill fewer people.â
Gabriel looked straight at Maxwell. âThen it has to be you two. Either you call Ethan⊠or you have Aurora talk to him.â
Maxwell exhaled, long and heavy. ââŠAlright. Iâll try.â
He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling like it might offer answers.
âWhat the hell kind of world are we even living in anymore.â
