Ji Dong carried the feverish Xiao’ai to the Military Region Hospital, coaxing her as they walked. He found that the child stayed very quietly in his arms, her hot forehead softening his heart as if it were water. He gently stroked the child’s soft hair, tenderly coaxing, “Xiao’ai, you’re sick. Uncle will take you to see the doctor first, okay? Your little aunt will be here soon, so don’t be scared, alright?”

The little person in his arms nodded slightly, her fine, soft hair brushing against Ji Dong, making his heart ache.

Ji Dong, holding Xiao’ai, sat down in a nearby seat, softly reassuring the little girl not to be scared while waiting.

In contrast, Xiao’ai seemed utterly calm, even more so than he, which made Ji Dong secretly admire her. It’s always said that kids are scared of hospitals and injections, but this little girl from the group captain’s family seemed like she was used to the big scenes, showing no fear at all. Instead, her pair of glittering, glassy eyes wandered around curiously.

Ji Dong wasn’t much of a talker, and he usually seemed somewhat indifferent.

That he could say so many words to soothe a child was already beyond his limits.

Somehow, every time he was with this little girl, he felt a nervous thudding in his heart, always anxious that she might be uncomfortable, and he couldn’t help but care for her.

Xiao’ai, on the other hand, always seemed very relaxed around him; even Su Shu found it strange, noting that Xiao’ai usually didn’t like getting close to people. And yet, every time she met Company Commander Ji, she was very proactive.
