"Damian..."
Her voice cracked.
"Why... did you come here?"
He looked at her, blood running from his mouth, his body held together by nothing but Will.
"Why... did you throw away your life for me? None of my visions showed you here... None of my futures had you in them."
Her purple eyes shimmered with tears she couldnât suppress.
"You shouldnât have come... Thereâs no escape. Iâm supposed to die today. My Seer skill showed it. Every path leads to death... Every future ends here with my corpse on burning ground."
She swallowed against the lump in her throat.
"So why struggle? Why make yourself suffer for something that canât be changed? Why throw away your future for someone already dead? "
Damianâs telekinesis pulled his broken body closer to hers, bringing their faces level.
He met her eyes directly.
"I know."
Elizabethâs face showed confusion.
"You... you know?"
"I know youâre supposed to die here."
His voice was steady despite everything.
"I know your visions showed your death. I know every probable future ends with you not surviving this day."
He pulled himself even closer.
"I... know all of that."
Another movement, his destroyed leg dragging behind him, leaving a trail of blood.
"And I. Donât. Care."
His crimson eyes blazed with fury that transcended physical pain.
"So what if youâre supposed to die here?! So what if every vision showed your death?! So what if fate itself decided today is your last day?!"
His voice rose, carrying across the battlefield.
"Does that mean we should just give up?! Does it mean struggling is pointless?! Does it mean everything is already decided and weâre just puppets dancing on strings?!"
He positioned himself beside her despite being barely able to move.
"
NO!
"
The word came out as a roar.
"No one gets to decide how my story ends except me! Not fate! Not destiny! Not some fucking future that hasnât happened yet!"
His Slaughter Intent blazed brighter than ever, the translucent flames consuming his entire body.
"Everyone is supposed to die someday! Every future ends eventually! But if death comes to take you today, you fight it for one more day! One more hour! One more minute!"
Blood ran from his wounds but his voice never wavered.
"And if you manage to snatch even one more second from deathâs jaws, if you survive even one heartbeat longer than you were supposed to... YOU WIN!"
His eyes burned with absolute conviction.
"I will change fate! Today is the day I prove the future isnât written! Today is the day I show the universe that prophecy means NOTHING compared to human will!"
The Domain around them pulsed in response to his declaration, the darkness deepening, the crimson sky blazing brighter.
Elizabeth stared at him, tears streaming down her face, something breaking and reforming in her chest.
âYou absolute madman...â
More enemies charged, sensing the end, moving in for the kill.
Damianâs Slaughter Intent erupted with renewed fury, the flames wrapping around his telekinetically-controlled axe, his entire being glowing with dark light.
The weapon moved through the air like a living thing, guided by his Will, striking with precision that defied his broken state.
****
What followed was butchery elevated to art.
Damian used his
Telekinesis
to control both his axe and compensate for his destroyed limbs. His single remaining arm pushed against the ground, keeping his torso elevated, while his mind guided his weapon through enemies with surgical precision.
One strike one kill.
An enemyâs head flew, anotherâs chest opened and a third split vertically.
His
Self-Healing
burned through remaining Aura, knitting flesh as fast as new wounds opened. He was a machine running on fumes, held together by nothing but conviction.
Behind him, Elizabeth fought despite her destroyed leg, despite her missing arm, despite knowing it was futile. If Damian could keep fighting, so could she.
Her sword found throats from her position on the ground, Lightning sparked from her blade and bodies fell.
They carved through attackers together, two broken warriors refusing to die.
The remaining A ranks fell one by one to their combined assault, Damianâs Domain creating crucial openings while his axe claimed lives and Elizabethâs blade found exposed throats.
****
But there were still enemies remaining, circling like wolves, waiting for the moment when exhaustion finally won.
Then the world changed.
CRACK
The sound echoed across the battlefield like thunder, wrong and final.
Bellaâs purple Domain shattered, lightning trees disappearing in an instant, the reality sheâd been maintaining collapsing completely.
BOOM
The backlash hit her like a physical blow, blood exploding from her mouth, her nose, her ears, her eyes, every orifice weeping red as the Domainâs feedback tore through her consciousness.
She dropped to her knees, body convulsing, hands pressed against her head as agony beyond physical pain consumed her.
âI lost... The Domain battle... I lost.â
The orange haired man had outlasted her, his superior Will and experience wearing down her defenses until she couldnât maintain the construct anymore.
And now the Inferno Citadelâs flames spread uncontested, burning hotter without her interference, consuming everything.
The heat intensified immediately, air becoming furnace-hot, ground glowing orange, Murdock family members screaming as fire wrapped around them.
Bella looked toward Elizabeth and Damian, toward her nephew Adrian lying unconscious, and something resolved in her chest despite the agony.
âAt least... at least they survived the assassins...â
Then movement happened in her peripheral vision.
The man vanished from his black tower.
****
Elizabeth and Damian didnât see it coming.
They were too focused on the enemies in front of them, too broken to track S rank movement, too exhausted to register the danger.
One moment the man on the tower was distant.
The nextâ
BOOOOM
Two figures appeared simultaneously where the orange-haired man should have materialized.
The manâs flames.
And a massive bald figure, bulky and powerful, intercepting the S rank before he could reach the broken teenagers.
The shockwave from their collision flattened everything within a hundred-meter radius, the raw force creating a crater, earth buckling under S rank power meeting S rank power.
BOOM
Kuro expanded instantly, his newly-advanced B- rank body growing massive, covering Damian, Elizabeth, and Adrian completely. His death energy formed a shield that absorbed the shockwaveâs impact, protecting them from destruction.
The Domainâs flames pressed against Kuroâs barrier but couldnât penetrate, the ravenâs death energy repelling the fire.
Damianâs consciousness flickered, exhaustion dragging him toward darkness.
But through failing awareness, he managed to whisper.
"...I almost... thought he... wouldnât help..."
His eyes closed, body going limp.
Elizabeth looked at the two figures clashing in the distance through Kuroâs protective barrier, their movements too fast to track, their power too overwhelming to comprehend.
âWho... who is that?â
