Chapter 1310: Desperation
Atticus was grateful for the information. But that didnât erase the fact that the king had come to kill him. If Atticus wasnât as powerful as he was, they wouldnât be talking.
âThereâs also thatâŠâ There was something else that had caught Atticusâ attention, something that made him pause.
âIt is my hope that you wouldnât kill any of my warriors,â the king started.
âAs long as they fall in line.â
The king nodded, then hesitated, but he forced himself to continue.
âI have a feeling your potential will get you to the top. And my second in command is far too stubborn not to reach the top with you. I want you to deliver a message for him, your eminence.â
He took Atticusâ silence as permission. âWhen you reach the top, please revive my wife and daughter.â
âThere it is again.â Atticusâ eyes narrowed. This was why he had chosen to hear the kingâs last wish.
Revival.
It was one of Atticusâ own goals, to reach the top and bring back those he had lost. His grandmother especially.
Atticus was facing an inner dilemma he rarely experienced. Kancilot had tried to kill him. It was only right that he kill him too.
But the desperation in the kingâs eyes was undeniable. He would do anything to bring his family back.
âI can use it.â
Atticus would be extremely busy in the middle planes, dealing with other worlds, training, politics, and preventing his own worldâs destruction.
From what Whisker told him, enemies would come from all sides. Having someone dedicated to finding out how to revive the dead could be useful.
Plus, the king was right, controlling the god meant controlling the world.
âDid you make any pact with the man?â Atticus finally asked.
Kancilot shook his head fiercely. âNo, no,â he said quickly. âIâm sure he assumed I wouldnât betray him because of my familyâs revival.â
âAdmit defeat.â
At those words, the kingâs eyes flew wide.
âŠ
Whiskerâs expression had twisted, and he avoided Ozerothâs mocking gaze.
He had confidently claimed that Atticus would only need a second to deal with the king, but several seconds had passed, and nothing had happened.
The warriors of Kariot clenched their fists, hope flickering to life within them. Lancaster had already informed them of where their king had gone.
If their king had lasted this long in the arena, then maybe, just maybe, he had found a way to match the child monster.
None of them dared engage Ozeroth or Whisker. If their king won, the world would be theirs regardless.
As they all waited with bated breath, a frown appeared on Ozerothâs face.
âBond is taking too long.â Even he had to admit that Atticus was taking longer than expected. They had all seen how overwhelming the odds were.
Suddenly, streaks of light tore across the horizon, surging toward them. Magnus, Avalon, and a handful of other Eldorians appeared in front of them.
âWhereâs Atticus?â Magnus asked, his killing intent slamming into the circle members with crushing force.
Lancaster raised a hand, stopping the others from responding with their own killing intent.
âWe have to wait for the king,â he said firmly.
âHeâs in the arena of gods,â Ozeroth responded, his tone drawing narrowed looks from Magnus and Avalon.
Even Oberon noticed the trace of uncertainty in Ozerothâs voice. But before they could question him, a golden light erupted across the skies, its radiance overwhelming.
âFinally.â
Ozeroth felt Atticusâ presence before anyone else. But as the light began to dim, his frown deepened. Why was there another presence near Atticus?
When the light finally vanished, all eyes turned to Atticus, and then to Kancilot. The latter was wrapped tightly in Atticusâ will, his earlier arrogance completely gone. He even looked⊠submissive.
Atticus allowed the king to speak to his warriors before appearing before his own people.
âAre you okay?â Avalon asked, while Magnusâ gaze was equally sharp and questioning. By now, all the Eldorians had gathered.
âIâm fine,â Atticus replied with a reassuring smile.
âWould you mind enlightening these primitive minds as to why you took so long?â Whisker said with a forced smile.
It would take him a while to live down the embarrassment, especially since Ozeroth had heard him. The spirit would never let it go.
âWe were talking.â
Everyone looked confused.
âFirst off,â Atticus turned to Whisker, âwhy didnât you tell me about the ascension trial?â
Whisker blinked, feeling all eyes on him. âI couldnât,â he said with a shrug.
âWhy?â
âBecause the star of the Verge forbids it. If I had told you, he wouldnât have allowed you to ascend.â
Atticus frowned. âThe starâŠâ
He hadnât met this star yet, but after everything that had just happened, he wasnât sure he wanted to. Not that heâd have much of a choice.
âWe were targeted,â Atticus finally said. The Eldoriansâ expressions turned cold, and Ozerothâs aura erupted, a heavy weight pressing down over the area.
âBy who, Bond?â
âThe Redflame representative,â Atticus answered.
Whisker sighed. âI just knew it.â
Atticus understood his sentiment. Whisker had been among those who told him not to join a faction, but he had also warned him about how stuck up and arrogant they all were.
âStop whining,â Ozeroth said sharply. âThey dared make an enemy of us. We wonât let this slide.â He glanced at Atticus as he said the last words.
âI have no intention of letting it slide, donât worry,â Atticus said, and Ozeroth smirked.
âOnly the Red Flames would do this openly,â Whisker said after a pause. âIf the Abyss representative took offense, theyâd attack from the shadows. The Nature faction too, they act peaceful, but theyâre rotten on the inside.â
There was a bitterness in Whiskerâs tone when he mentioned the Nature faction, a hatred that Atticus and Ozeroth didnât miss. Neither of them commented on it.
âThe Iron representatives are the only ones we donât need to worry about. Theyâre too rigid and militaristic to bother with something this petty.â
âSo, the Redflame, Abyss, and Nature representatives,â Atticus confirmed.
Whisker nodded.
âAlright!â Ozeroth cracked his knuckles with a grin. âWhen we get to the middle planes, weâll make them pay!â
Atticus and Whisker gave Ozeroth a look. They shook their heads in unison. The spirit clearly hadnât realized just how massive the scale of their enemies was.
âBy the way,â Oberonâs cautious voice cut in. He waited for a long pause before daring to speak in the middle of such a tense conversation.
âIs there a reason you spared their god, supreme ruler?â he asked.
Hey yâall. Iâll first like to apologize for the erratic uploads of July. Iâm determined to make sure it doesnât happen again. August should be free of that. Thank you all for your understanding and love. Btw, weâre dangerously below in the golden tickets ranking, letâs keep the tickets flowing and rank high. Thank you!
Ps, the bonus chapter incentive for last months still holds. Rank 10 and above for extra chapters. I know Iâm still owing a few, ill work on repaying them. Cheers!
