Cheng Su and Qi Taiguo rushed to the hospital; Hualing hadnāt left yet, seemingly waiting for her to come. But seeing Qi Taiguo there too, Hualing was stunned for a moment and pulled Cheng Su aside.
"Why did you bring him too?" Hualing seemed a bit flustered and a bit embarrassed.
She had told Cheng Su that this was a matter for women; what was the point of bringing Qi Taiguo along?
Cheng Su purposely said, "If I donāt bring him, how can we start tearing into it?"
Hualing became more awkward and said, "Why not wait until itās clear before saying anything? What if weāve got it wrong, wouldnāt that be mortifying?"
"Arenāt you just waiting to see my joke?" Cheng Su replied with a half-smile.
Hualingās thoughts were exposed, and her face turned red with anger as she said, "Cheng Su, donāt be like this, Iām saying this for your own good!"
"Okay, okay, itās not what you think. Old Qi already explained it to me; she is a widow of a comrade named Zheng Guixiang." Cheng Su stopped teasing her.
Hualing was taken aback; what, a widow of a comrade?
Heaven, what kind of big misunderstanding is this!
However, this name Zheng Guixiang seems so familiar, like Iāve heard it somewhere?
"Where is she, in which ward?" Qi Taiguo walked up and asked.
Hualing was startled for a moment, then replied, "In 303."
Upon hearing this, Qi Taiguo strode towards the inpatient building, followed closely by Cheng Su.
After thinking for a moment, Hualing followed them too.
In room 303, there were several hospital beds, all occupied; some people were talking, and others were lying down.
Qi Taiguo scanned the room but didnāt see Little Yu; he looked again at the patients on the beds and his gaze fell on the innermost bed.
He walked over and found a pale and frail little girl lying there asleep.
"Niannian," Qi Taiguo murmured softly.
Cheng Su approached, glanced at the little girl, and asked, "Is it her?"
Qi Taiguo nodded, "Itās Little Yuās daughter."
Cheng Su looked at the information card hanging at the foot of the bed and called Hualing over, asking, "What illness does she have?"
Hualing glanced at it and said, "Malnutrition and pneumonia caused by high fever." Then she asked, "Who is she?"
"The daughter of Platoon Leader Zheng, a posthumous child," Cheng Su whispered in her ear.
Hualingās throat tightened, and she instinctively touched her own raised belly.
Her face heated up, feeling ashamed and embarrassed for her own sordid thoughts.
"Uncle Qi." Sometime during this, Niannian awoke, opened her eyes, and hoarsely called out.
"Ah, Niannian." Qi Taiguo walked over, bent down, and rubbed his nose against the little girlās nose, clearly a gesture they were familiar with.
"Uncle Qi hasnāt come to see Niannian for a long time!"
"Uncle has been busy and had tasks to do! Itās Uncleās fault; he should have come to see Niannian sooner." Qi Taiguo brushed away the fine hair on her face with his big hand, saying, "But Niannian, why are you sick again? Uncle told Niannian to run ten big laps every day, didnāt he?"
The little girl shyly said, "Niannian ran, but Niannian didnāt succeed; she still got sick, worrying Mom and making Uncle look down on her. Niannian really isnāt good!"
"Uncle isnāt looking down on Niannian, heās just concerned. Youāre a good child; you need to get better quickly!" Qi Taiguo said softly, "Once Niannian gets better, Uncle will take Niannian to the amusement park, okay?"
The little girlās eyes lit up when she heard this, she hurriedly nodded and extended her hand, "Pinkie promise!"
Qi Taiguo reached out and linked pinkies with her.
Cheng Su and Hualing watched from the side, their eyes warm.
Then, suddenly, there was a clattering sound of a water basin being overturned. Everyone looked, only to see a woman hastily rushing out of the ward.
