Chapter 1058: Canât Let Go
When Su Li arrived home, he finally found Gu Zi in the kitchen.
âMom,â he said eagerly, âXu Shengâs dad is back. He wants to take us to the hospital to visit Xu Sheng. Can we go?â
Gu Zi stilled for a moment. So, the man had finally shown up.
From what Su Shenâs investigations had uncovered, even if he wasnât Xu Ye himself, he was certainly someone deeply connected to him.
And now, he was inviting Su Li to visit Xu Sheng?
She didnât feel comfortable letting her son go alone. But this was an opportunityâwho knew what useful information she might gather from the visit?
After a brief moment of contemplation, she said, âItâs not safe for just the two of you to go alone. How about this? Iâll take you both. Your dad left his car at home today, anyway.â
Su Li lit up with delight. He had no objections to his mother coming along. As they were about to leave, they ran into Xu Shengâs father at the door.
Su Li, brimming with excitement, announced, âUncle, my mom said sheâll drive us to see Xu Sheng. Weâll meet you at the hospital!â
The man cast a glance at Gu Zi before offering a polite nod. âMrs. Su, hello. Xu Sheng has told me about youâhow you saved his life. Iâm very grateful.â
Gu Zi returned his greeting and studied him carefully. He wore a watch so exclusive that even money couldnât necessarily buy it, paired with a tailored suit that practically screamed wealth. This man was undeniably someone with serious connections.
He appeared to be around the same age as Su Shen, but while Su Shen exuded an unyielding, masculine force, this man had a more restrained, melancholic aura.
âIt was a matter of life and death,â Gu Zi replied coolly. âAnyone would have done the same. Thereâs no need to dwell on it. But as for Huang Feiâif the same situation happened again, I would make the same choice. I wonât tolerate anyone repeatedly trying to harm me.â
She had sent Huang Fei straight to the police station. There was no way her husband wouldnât know about it. And yet, here he was, greeting her with remarkable composure.
She was curiousâwhat exactly was his stance on the matter? So, she deliberately brought up Huang Feiâs name, watching his reaction.
The man saw through her intent immediately. Without hesitation, he stated, âIâm aware of what happened between you and Huang Fei. I wonât interfere, nor do I hold any grudges. She was in the wrong. But at the end of the day, she is my wife and Xu Shengâs mother. Once she has learned her lesson, I will arrange for her release. When that time comes, I hope you will refrain from taking further action.â
Gu Zi was momentarily surprised. Was it just her, or did this man seem to have little affection for his own wife? But whatever his personal sentiments were, they werenât her concern. Her goal was simply to ensure that Huang Fei received the punishment she deserved. If he wanted to bail her out later, that wasnât her problem.
âAs long as she receives the punishment she deserves and issues a public apology with compensation, I wonât interfere any further,â she said matter-of-factly.
The man nodded. âThen Iâll see you at the hospital.â With that, he turned and left.
Gu Zi got into the car, driving Su Li and Gao Ming to the hospital. Along the way, she made a quick stop to pick up some fruits and snacks.
Upon arriving at the hospital, she led the children to Xu Shengâs roomâonly to discover that he was staying in one of the hospitalâs exclusive suites, complete with a private doctor and a dedicated team of nurses.
Xu Sheng himself looked much better, though there was a distinct stiffness in the way he interacted with his father. It didnât take much to guess that this was a relationship defined by long absences and minimal bonding.
Gu Zi turned her gaze to Xu Shengâs father. Over the past few days, Su Shen had discreetly ordered an investigation into the man. With his formidable background and calculating mind, there was no way he hadnât noticed the scrutiny. If that were the case, it would be far more efficient to ask him directly.
âYou donât seem very familiar with your son,â she remarked.
The man didnât bother hiding anything. âIn our family,â he said flatly, âraising children and running the household are a womanâs responsibility. From past generations to now, I have never known what it means to have a father-son relationship. Nor do I understand why such a thing would be necessary.â
Gu Zi let out a quiet sigh. Xu Sheng really was unfortunateâto be born into such a cold and detached household. What good was wealth and power if a child had to grow up in an emotional icebox? A child raised in this environment would either become just as frigid or be left with an insatiable hunger for love. Either way, it was a psychological burden no child should have to bear.
And suddenly, she understood. No wonder Xu Sheng was so attached to Huang Fei. In his world, her presence was likely the only semblance of warmth he had ever known.
Tangled up with a family like thisâit was a stroke of misfortune for all her three children. And yet, this man wanted to take them away from the Su family?
Now that she had seen things clearly, she was more certain than ever. No matter what his reasons were, neither she nor Su Shen could afford to let go of those children.
