Chapter 1084: Buying Instant Noodles for Gu Zi
Without hesitation, Gao Lang forked over a small fortuneāfive times the standard priceāfor two measly motion sickness pills.šš»š®š®š¬ššššøš«šš”.š¬šøš
Granted, heād expected a markup, but the sheer audacity of the price still sent a ripple of disbelief through the group. āAbsolute daylight robbery,ā someone muttered.
Passengers nearby, who had just been toying with the idea of purchasing the pills themselves, immediately retracted their intentions, whispering among themselves, āForget it. Weāll just hold it in. Even puking seems more reasonable than throwing money at that kind of scam. I mean, those people bought sleeper seatsātheyāre obviously loaded. Weāre not in their league.ā
Gao Lang paid the mutterings no mind. His focus was on his son. He gave Gao Ming the medication, and mercifully, the child stopped retching. But he wilted completelyāno longer the bright-eyed boy eager to soak in the scenery with Su Li. Now, just sitting upright seemed an insurmountable task.
Gao Ming had been so excited about his first train ride, imagining it would be an unforgettable adventure with his friend. Instead, he ended up listless and pale, slumped against his fatherās shoulder, fast asleep within minutes.
Su Li watched his friend quietly for a while, concern flickering across his features, but the pull of childhood curiosity soon got the better of him. Not long after, heād immersed himself in a whirlwind of games with the other children on the train.
He had brought along a Go board, and in no time, he was holding court in the aisle, the undisputed star of the sleeper car. Su Li won every match with effortless flair, earning admiration and wide-eyed gasps from the other kids.
Back straight, chest puffed out, Su Li basked in his moment of glory. As long as he wasnāt playing against the likes of his older brother Su Bing, who was almost terrifyingly good, or the brilliant Gao Ming, when he wasnāt motion-sick, or the elusive Xu Sheng, whom he had yet to beat even once, Su Li was a legend in his own right.
āThat was nothing,ā he said smugly, as he prepared another move. āHere, watch closelyāIāll teach you a killer trick.ā
Meanwhile, Su Shen was on parenting duty.
Gu Zi, curled up in a window seat, was gazing dreamily at the ever-changing landscape. She was undeniably strikingāelegant, poised, effortlessly out of place in the drab train carāand it wasnāt long before she began to draw attention.
A pair of female students passed by, unable to contain their curiosity. One of them whispered excitedly, āDid you see her? She has to be a celebrity. Sheās gorgeous! She doesnāt even look like she belongs on the same planet as us.ā
Her companion, equally smitten, sighed. āIf she were at our school, sheād be the undisputed campus queen. Did you see her hair? That soft, bouncy curlāso chic. Do you think I could pull it off?ā
Back in the world of grown-ups, a few passengers were looking for a fourth player for a game of cards and turned to Su Shen. He politely declined, scooping up the sleepy Su Le from the floor. āIām on kid duty,ā he said with an apologetic smile. āMaybe another time.ā
Gu Zi watched this unfold with faint amusement and a tinge of satisfaction. Goodāhe was being responsible. She was feeling a little worn out, and now she could rest easy.
Turning to Su Shen, she said, āLele will need her formula soon. Donāt forget to make it for her. Iāve already boiled water in the kettleāshould be just the right temperature. Iām going to catch some sleep.ā
Su Shen gently pulled a blanket over her midsection and nodded. āGot it. Rest while you can. Iāll wake you up in a bitāyou donāt want to sleep too long and end up wide awake tonight.ā
Whether she heard him or not, no one could say. Within moments, Gu Zi had drifted off, lulled by the rhythmic hum of the train.
About twenty minutes later, Su Shen gently tried to wake her. But she groaned, turned over with an exaggerated huff, and pulled the blanket over her head like a stubborn child.
Well, that was that.
Later that evening, Su Shen returned with boxed meals in hand.
Gu Zi stirred at last, squinting at the darkened window and then at the food neatly laid out on the little table. She stared at him accusingly. āItās already dinner time. Why didnāt you wake me?ā
Su Shen smiled with warm indulgence. āI tried. You didnāt respond. You mustāve been exhausted. No harm in getting a little extra rest.ā
She rubbed her temple, trying to recallābut she remembered nothing. Zero. Her stomach growled softly. āWhatās in them?ā she asked. āI want something light.ā
With the gentle patience of a man well-trained in the fine art of keeping her happy, Su Shen opened both boxes and explained, āOne has stir-fried carrots with eggs and seasonal greens. The other has steamed egg custard with braised eggplant and green beans. Take your pickāwhichever one you donāt want, Iāll eat. And if neither works for you, Iāll grab you some instant noodles.ā
Gu Zi blinked at him, taken aback by his unflinching attentiveness. She picked up her chopsticks, paused, and instead reached out to gently pinch his cheek.
āBoss Su,ā she murmured with a sly smile, āyouāre supposed to be cold and domineering. Donāt go getting soft on me like this.ā
Because the truth was, with Su Shen around, she didnāt have to lift a finger. He anticipated her needs, met every request, and never lost patienceāeven when she was being finicky.
She really didnāt feel like eating boxed food. Noodles sounded way better.
Su Shen blinked at her little gesture, then stood up, already reaching for his wallet. āIāll get you your noodles. These can go to Su Li and the kids.ā
The moment Su Li heard the word noodles, his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. He glanced at the boxed meals in front of himāsuddenly, they looked utterly unappetizing. Tugging at Su Shenās pant leg, he pleaded, āDaddy, me too! I want instant noodles too! Please get me one!ā
