The woman smiled warmly. “All right, Gu Zi, was it? I’ll remember that. And don’t worry too much—most people around here are decent. Oh, by the way, my name is Jiang Nan. My parents were hoping for a boy, so they gave me this name. I thought about changing it when I got older, but it felt like too much hassle. So Jiang Nan it is. If you ever need anything or have questions, just come ask me, all right?”

With that, Jiang Nan bustled off, leaving Gu Zi standing at the doorway, troubled.

She stepped back inside the house with a heavy heart. The place might be charming, even picturesque, but it certainly didn’t feel safe—not with burglars prowling about and convicted murderers lurking nearby. No matter how lovely the courtyard looked in the dappled afternoon sun, she didn’t feel the slightest urge to appreciate it now.

What worried her most was that the thief hadn’t even succeeded in stealing anything, which meant he might only get a slap on the wrist—perhaps a few days in detention, and then he’d be back out.

If what Jiang Nan said was true, and this man really did have some underworld connections, then it was entirely possible he’d be let off after a simple verbal warning. The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt.

Su Li, seeing the worried look on her face, still had no clue what had happened. He balled his little fists and tried to reassure her, “Mommy, don’t worry. If bad people ever come into the house again, I’ll punch them with both fists and chase them out! I’ll protect you!”

Su Bing, ever the more observant and grounded of the two, frowned slightly. “You may know kung fu,” he told his brother calmly, “but you’re still just a kid. The men around here are tall and strong—you can’t take them on. Don’t make trouble. Let Mom have some peace.”

Gu Zi was quiet for a moment, then looked at both boys seriously. “Su Bing is right, which is why I need both of you to remember—this neighborhood is still new to us. Don’t wander around on your own for now, okay?”𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

After giving that firm instruction, Gu Zi returned to her room.

Su Shen still hadn’t come back after escorting the thief to the police station the night before. Given the fall the burglar had taken from the tree—and the encounter with Big Yellow—it was likely he was quite seriously injured.

Su Shen probably had to wait for him to be treated at the hospital before proceeding with the police statement. It might be a while before he returned.

By dusk, Gu Zi had already turned on all the lights. She was still feeling unsettled.

It wasn’t until after dinner that Su Shen finally walked through the door. Gu Zi was in the living room, trying to watch television, but the signal was so poor it was more of a frustrating distraction than anything else.

The moment she heard him come in, she stood up quickly. Of course, she couldn’t admit that she’d been too afraid to stay in her room alone, so she said instead, “You’re back. I saved you some dinner—it’s still warm. Sit down and eat.”

The children were outside playing with Big Yellow, so the house was unusually quiet. Having Su Shen back home brought her a huge sense of relief.

Su Shen nodded, sat down, and began to eat. As he did, he updated her calmly, “The man’s a local. Name’s Jiang Yao. He was badly hurt—didn’t even regain consciousness until this afternoon. He’s a repeat offender, notorious for theft. And… he’s previously killed someone.”

Gu Zi stiffened. It really was the man Jiang Nan had mentioned.

Her expression turned serious. “Does he have any connections… you know, from the underworld?”

Su Shen paused, clearly surprised that she already knew this much. She must have spoken to someone. She must have been scared while he was gone.

He nodded slowly. “Yes. He’s… complicated. From what I gathered, the police probably won’t press charges seriously this time. Might just let him off with a warning.”

Then he looked at her intently and added, “But Gu Zi, don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

She hesitated for a beat, then quickly added, “I’m not afraid. I’m just worried about the children’s safety. Su Shen, we need to do something. We need to make this place more secure.”

Finishing his meal, Su Shen got up to clear the table. “Leave it to me,” he said gently. “I’ll handle it. I’ll get someone in to rework the layout—tighten security where it’s lacking. If there’s anything else you want to change, just tell me.”

At the top of his priority list was the bathroom layout. He wanted to separate the wet and dry areas, just like in their previous home. As for the rest, he’d follow her preferences to the letter. She could be a little particular at times, but that was exactly the woman he loved.

Despite his reassurance, it wasn’t until later that night—when Gu Zi lay in bed with his arms wrapped tightly around her—that she truly felt safe. Thankfully, the bed was new, soft, and comfortable.

She nestled against him and said softly, “Su Shen, I’ll have to report to the university in a couple of days. I still don’t know how far it is from here. Can you come with me tomorrow to check it out?”

Su Shen tightened his hold and murmured, “I went today. Had a look around. You just rest for now, get your energy back. When it’s time, I’ll take you there myself. Don’t worry, it’s not far.”

Hearing that, Gu Zi playfully pinched his cheek—he was just so handsome.

Unable to resist, she planted a loud kiss on his face. “Su Shen, you are, without a doubt, the most competent husband I’ve ever seen. I love you.”

His entire body tensed. His eyes darkened as he leaned down and whispered against her lips, “Gu Zi, I love you too.”

And then he kissed her—deeply, with mounting intensity. His love for her surged like wildfire, scorching through his veins, setting his heart ablaze…
