Yu Fang didn’t know how to rebut her son’s words, but her intention to bring back all three children hadn’t wavered.

She tried once more to convince her youngest son, “Xu Fan, but we’re their closest blood relatives, aren’t we? Your brother would surely want them to know their roots.”

Xu Fan shook his head coldly, his expression unreadable. “The children’s adoptive father is just as much their blood relative as we are. You think he, as their adoptive father, their actual uncle, is going to forgive the way my eldest brother treated their mother back then? Mom, if you don’t want the children to hate you, I suggest you leave their family’s life undisturbed.”

Yu Fang didn’t expect her son to be so firm on the matter.

Xu Fan had predicted that she would find out about the three children’s situation eventually, but he didn’t think it would happen so quickly. Still, his decision was unwavering. The children would fare far better with the Su family than they ever would with the Xu family.

As for the inheritance left behind by his late brother, Xu Fan planned to transfer it into the children’s names once he had the paperwork in order. It was the least he could do to repay them for what his brother had left them.

In the corner, Xu Sheng, who had been lurking there, was still frozen in shock. He had merely wanted to ask about his mother’s situation at Guangcheng Prison, but what he overheard was nothing short of earth-shattering.

Su Bing and his siblings were the biological children of his late uncle. That meant they were his cousins.

For the first time, Xu Sheng felt his thoughts jumbled in confusion. He didn’t sleep well that night, and the next morning, he went to school in a daze.

He was so out of sorts that the teacher had to call his name three times before he responded. Even when the teacher asked him to come up with a solution to a problem, Xu Sheng’s mind was completely absent, and he miscalculated the answer in a way that was entirely out of character for him.

His classmates, noticing his odd behavior, gave him curious glances.

Su Bing was especially aware of the change. Xu Sheng had always been a diligent student, so it was strange to see him make such a careless mistake. When the bell rang for the end of class, Su Bing headed toward the library to borrow a couple of extracurricular books. But before he could leave the classroom, Xu Sheng stepped in his path.

Su Bing looked up at him, his gaze questioning. “Do you need something?”

Xu Sheng studied Su Bing’s features with a strange intensity. He’d seen a photograph of his late uncle as a child in the study once, and the resemblance was uncanny. Yesterday, after overhearing a conversation between his father and grandmother, he went back to that photo and checked—the resemblance was undeniable.

Xu Sheng knew his uncle had been a soldier, but he was unaware of any mistakes his uncle had made in the past. He’d always thought highly of him.

Now, with a sudden curiosity, Xu Sheng asked, “Su Bing, you’re not really your dad’s biological son, are you? Have you ever wondered who your real father is?”

Su Bing furrowed his brow, a little taken aback. “I’m my dad’s son, and that’s all there is to it. I don’t have a biological father. My brother, sister, and I—we were all born of my mother.”

It wasn’t a surprise that Xu Sheng knew about the adoption; after all, the fact that the three siblings were adopted by Su Bing’s father was hardly a secret. What baffled Su Bing, however, was why Xu Sheng was so interested in it.

Xu Sheng pressed on, “But no one has just a mother, no father at all. I’m just curious. You’re so smart—your real father must be an exceptional man. Do you have any memory of him?”

A memory of his biological father? Su Bing instinctively tried to remember, but a flood of dark thoughts overwhelmed him. The man, his father—he remembered him, but his face was blurry.

What stuck out more than anything was the image of him walking away from them, leaving without a backward glance. And every time he left, his mother would turn from gentle to violent, tearing at him with words—accusations that he wasn’t enough, that he couldn’t even keep his father around, calling him a harbinger of misfortune. Even his biological father couldn’t possibly love him.

Su Bing clutched his head and sank to his knees, the memories threatening to overtake him.

Xu Sheng, shocked by his reaction, rushed to his side. He hadn’t realized how difficult it would be for Su Bing to recall such painful memories. “I’m sorry,” Xu Sheng said urgently. “I shouldn’t have asked. Let me take you to the school nurse.”

After that moment, Su Bing withdrew, his attitude toward Xu Sheng cooling considerably. He didn’t want to give him any further opportunity to speak.

But Xu Sheng’s curiosity didn’t dissipate. He now considered going to Su Li, who was entirely different from Su Bing in personality. If anyone would spill the truth, it would be him.

But when he saw Su Li again, Xu Sheng was stunned. In just two months, Su Li had grown significantly taller. How fast was this kid growing? What on earth was he eating?
