The woman’s smile didn’t falter. Even in the face of his frosty reception, she remained composed. “You must be Mr. Su’s eldest son, right? I’ve heard so much about you from your father. I’m here to speak with him—please, could you let me in and pass on a message?”

Su Bing eyed her suspiciously. It was late, and he couldn’t fathom why anyone would be coming to see his father at this hour. “What do you need?”

At that moment, Su Li, oblivious to the tension in the air, bounded over from behind Su Bing and ran into the house, calling out enthusiastically, “Mom, there’s a lady here to see Dad! You should come out and take a look!”

The woman turned to Su Bing, her tone calm yet persistent. “Young Master Su, this is a work-related matter. I really need to speak with your father. Please allow me to enter.”

Meanwhile, Gu Zi, having heard the commotion, exchanged a glance with Su Shen before walking out. As she stepped into the hallway, she saw the woman standing just inside the door.

The woman looked to be in her twenties, dressed in a professional suit, paired with a form-fitting skirt and black stockings. Her hair was styled in soft, mature waves, and her sharp eyes radiated competence.

Su Shen, following Gu Zi, looked at the woman and then turned his gaze back to Gu Zi. The woman, without acknowledging Gu Zi, stepped forward and addressed Su Shen. “Mr. Su, Mr. Chen asked me to bring you this document. He needs you to sign it.”

She handed the file to Su Shen, her focus entirely on him, as if Gu Zi wasn’t even there. Gu Zi, however, remained composed, standing next to Su Shen and silently watching the unfolding scene.

Su Shen, ever the gentleman, took the document and, without missing a beat, pulled Gu Zi closer. “This is my wife,” he said firmly. “Since you’re assisting me, you should know who my wife is. I’ve received the file, and I’ll take it to Mr. Chen tomorrow. You may go now, and please remember—unless it’s urgent, there’s no need for such late-night deliveries in the future.”

The woman didn’t seem bothered by Su Shen’s cold tone. Instead, she beamed a wide, ingratiating smile. “Of course, Mr. Su. And Mrs. Su, I apologize for the intrusion. Should you need anything, feel free to contact me anytime.”

Seeing that Gu Zi wasn’t responding to her, Su Shen, clearly irritated, cut her off with a firm, “It’s late. You should head home now.”

The woman hesitated, casting a brief glance at Gu Zi before nodding and leaving. As her figure disappeared into the night, Gu Zi observed her with quiet calculation. Young, elegant, and beautiful, she was everything a man with money could attract. It wasn’t a surprise, really; after all, wealth had its way of drawing such attention.

Su Shen, sensing Gu Zi’s discomfort, quickly interjected, “She’s a secretary that Chen Yu arranged for me. I told him I didn’t need her, but he insisted, saying she’s multilingual and would save us time when dealing with foreign clients.”

Gu Zi finally lifted her eyes to meet his. “I understand the need for effective communication in your line of work,” she said coolly. “But using someone just for their skills, especially someone with ulterior motives, can lead to trouble.”

Gu Zi wasn’t one to make a fuss without cause, but the secretary’s behavior had left her unsettled. It wasn’t an urgent document, so why the rush to deliver it in the middle of the night?

More troubling, during the entire interaction, the secretary had barely acknowledged her as the rightful lady of the house, not even offering a polite greeting until Su Shen had introduced her.

And that final glance? It carried a subtle challenge, a glint of something far from professional.

“I’m not just blaming the woman,” Gu Zi continued, her voice steady. “After all, these things don’t happen in a vacuum. But I can’t ignore the signs.”

Su Shen, understanding her concerns, nodded. “If she makes another move like this, I’ll have Chen Yu transfer her. It won’t happen again.”

Gu Zi raised an eyebrow, not entirely convinced. “So, you still want to keep her around for now? Be honest with me, Su Shen. I don’t trust her. I’ll make it clear right now—if I ever find out there’s something more going on between you two, or if she continues to make me uncomfortable, I’ll seriously consider divorce.”

Her words were sharp and unyielding. She wasn’t the kind of woman to wait for problems to fester. If something felt off, she addressed it immediately. She wasn’t about to let these things slide; her peace of mind was paramount.

Su Shen met her gaze, recognizing the unwavering determination in her eyes. “I understand, Gu Zi. I won’t let this happen again.”

Gu Zi nodded, satisfied for the moment. She wasn’t one to accept repeated heartache, and she was making sure Su Shen knew where she stood.
