Chapter 1152: Little Baby

To be precise, it was a middle-aged man followed by a group of ten or so young women—each of them looking fresh-faced and college-aged.

Some of them smelled heavily of alcohol, stumbling slightly as they walked, not paying attention to where they were going. One of them almost collided with Gu Zi, but fortunately, Su Shen reacted quickly and shielded her, gently guiding her aside.

The group erupted in laughter, the sound echoing through the hallway as they continued on, clearly not bothered by the incident.

Gu Zi turned her head to glance back and noticed someone quickly duck out of sight—Tang Xue. What was she doing here? And why was she mingling with these people?

Gu Zi’s mind raced as she walked out of the hospital with Su Shen.

Inside, Tang Xue, now breathing a sigh of relief, saw that Gu Zi hadn’t noticed her. She should have been more careful. If Gu Zi hadn’t greeted her, it meant she hadn’t seen her. That was a good thing. Tang Xue couldn’t let anyone from the school know she worked at a bar.

Back at the Su family’s house, the older two children had barely slept, too worried about their mother to rest. They were both up early, and Su Bing was busy preparing breakfast while Su Li went to wake up his sister.

Su Li, chewing on the breakfast his older brother had prepared, looked troubled.

“How could Mom be okay one minute and then suddenly have stomach pain the next? I hope she’s doing better now,” he said, worry lacing his voice.

Su Bing, just as concerned, responded thoughtfully, “Mom’s going to be fine. What we need to do is take care of ourselves so she doesn’t have to worry about us.”

At that moment, Su Le, still half-asleep and rubbing her eyes, heard them talking about their mother. She instinctively turned toward the door and, just as she spotted Gu Zi returning, she jumped up and ran to greet her.𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

“Mom! Mom’s back!” she cried.

But just before Su Le could throw herself into her mother’s arms, Su Shen intercepted her, lifting her up with a stern yet gentle expression.

“Lele, don’t be so reckless. Mom’s carrying a little baby now. Be careful, okay?”

Su Shen had been on edge since the previous day, especially after Gu Zi had eaten so many cold and cooling foods. He wanted to be extra cautious now that she was pregnant. He couldn’t afford to let anything happen to her or the baby.

But Gu Zi, brushing off his concerns, smiled and reassured him, “Stop overreacting. I’m not that fragile. Come on, Lele, let’s go inside.”

Though still young, Su Le had a keen sense for others’ emotions, especially when it came to her family. Gu Zi, worried that Su Shen’s nervousness might make Lele feel abandoned by her, decided to take matters into her own hands. She gently asked Su Shen to put Lele down and then took her hand to lead her inside.

Behind them, Su Bing and Su Li froze, hearing their father’s words.

A baby? They were going to be big brothers!

Su Bing immediately rushed over to his mother, concern mixed with excitement in his voice.

“Mom, sit down for a moment,” he said. “Have you had breakfast yet? Let me bring you something.”

Gu Zi settled on the couch, smiling at her thoughtful son. “I had some porridge earlier, but I’m a bit hungry again. Could you bring me some breakfast, dear? I know you and your brother have been taking care of each other while your dad and I were away.”

Though Su Bing had a twinge of worry—was Mom still going to love them once she had her own baby?—he felt reassured by his mother’s words. She still cared for them. That made him feel better. He promised himself he would take care of her and the baby.

Su Bing quickly returned with a warm roll he had specially heated for her, while Su Li bounced over with a curious look. He gazed at her stomach, his mind already working.

“Mom, is it going to be a brother or a sister?” he asked innocently. “Can you give me a little brother?”

Su Li was hoping for a brother, convinced that if Mom had a son, he could teach him to box and practice martial arts. Then, his little sister could focus on studying with their older brother, and he’d have a partner in crime for all things fun and action-packed. Together, they would be the perfect combination—brains and brawn.

Gu Zi laughed softly at Su Li’s innocent excitement. It had only been a month since she had become pregnant, and it was still too early to know the baby’s gender.

She smiled and gently teased him, “I don’t know yet if it’s a brother or a sister. What if it’s a sister, though?”
