Chapter 1173: I Want A Daughter
Gu Zi didnât even get a chance to speak before Chen Yu jumped in, grinning as he declared, âSecret recipe? Nonsense! Iâm telling you, this babyâs going to be a girl. Havenât you heard the old wivesâ tale? When a womanâs carrying a boy, she gets uglier, but when itâs a girl, she blossoms like a flower. Just look at her glow! Iâm afraid you two will have to try for a second one after this.â
He chuckled as he finished, though there was a trace of genuine sympathy on his faceâmostly for his old friend Su Shen. The man was barely in his early thirties, had only just gotten married after years of bachelorhood, and was finally expecting his first child⊠only for it to be a daughter. A daughter! And knowing how head-over-heels Su Shen was for his wife, if she decided this was their one and only, then wouldnât that brilliant genetic stock of his go completely to waste? No heir, no one to carry on the family name. It was downright tragic.
Those three kids Su Shen had helped raise over the years? Sure, they were close. But they werenât his flesh and blood. And Chen Yuâever the pragmatic traditionalistâcouldnât help but think: Gu Zi, as the legitimate wife of such a man with such an empire, really ought to give him a son. After all, human hearts are unpredictable. Those children might be sweet now, but who could say if theyâd take care of their adoptive parents in the future? A biological son, now that would be a guarantee.
Chen Yu had fully expected Su Shen to feel at least a little disappointed. But to his surprise, the man actually lit up like heâd just won the lottery.
âGu Zi, did you hear that?â Su Shen turned to his wife with a delighted smile. âEven Old Chen says itâs a girl. A daughter! Thatâs wonderful. One and doneâwe donât need any more after this.â
Gu Zi caught the odd look on Chen Yuâs face, and she could guess easily enough what was going through that old-fashioned brain of his. But really, his opinion didnât matter. He was an outsider. There was no reason to get riled up by a few outdated, patriarchal remarks.
Besides, Su Shen still had business dealings with him. What mattered most was that Su Shen wasnât like thatânot at all. That thought alone was enough to keep her mood light.
She smiled and said simply, âWhatever you say.â
Chen Yu stared at the couple, utterly baffled by their obvious joy. Were his eyes deceiving him? Did they actually want a daughter?
Unable to help himself, he blurted out, âOld Su, Gu Zi⊠if you only have a girl, what happens to your family fortune? Arenât you worried someone else might swoop in and take everything?â
Gu Zi very nearly rolled her eyes. She wasnât even going to grace that with a reply. But Su Shen, ever the gentleman, responded calmly, âI want a daughter. Son or daughterâit makes no difference. Our child will inherit our legacy either way. A daughter is just as much a Su as a son.â
Chen Yu simply could not wrap his head around it. Sure, he knew there were some couples who liked the idea of having a daughterâbut that was usually after theyâd secured a son. That way, the family line was safe, and the daughter was the cherry on top. But to want a girl right from the start? Who thought like that?
Besides, when a daughter got married, she left the family, didnât she? Who was to say she wouldnât take part of the inheritance with her and give it all to her husbandâs family?
He opened his mouth to argue some more, but before he could get a word out, Sun Yiâhis long-suffering wifeâkicked him hard under the table and snapped, âYou know absolutely nothing. God, youâre such a fossil. What century do you think this is? Girls are treasures too! If you donât know what youâre talking about, shut your mouth for once. Honestlyâcanât even eat in peace with that yap of yours.â
Chen Yu shrank back, humiliated, and tried to defend himself. âHoney, I was only trying to be helpful! I just donât want them to regret not having a son when theyâre older.â
But even Gu Zi was running out of patience. Her smile faded a little as she replied coolly, âChen Yu, it doesnât matter if itâs a boy or a girl. As long as itâs our child, weâll never regret it.â
That shut him up. Cold sweat formed on Chen Yuâs forehead as he realized no one at the table was on his side. He looked around awkwardlyâthankfully, salvation came in the form of a knock at the door.
Chen Xi, who was sitting closest, got up to open it. âItâs Assistant Chen here to deliver New Yearâs greetings,â he announced.
All eyes turned as Chen Ting swept in behind him, arms laden with festive gifts. She smiled brightly as she made her way around the room, offering greetings to each person. When she reached Su Shen, she handed him a beautifully packaged bundle and said with practiced sweetness, âHappy New Year, President Su. These are for the babyâjust a little token, I hope you donât mind.â
Gu Ziâs gaze swept over the woman. It was freezing outside, and yet Chen Ting had chosen to wear a plunging V-neck under a fitted coat, paired with sheer black tights and a tight pencil skirt that hugged her curves in all the right places. The outfit emphasized her tiny waist and accentuated every curveâsubtle but unmistakable. Her chest, noticeably prominent, seemed almost to lean toward Su Shen as she offered the gift.
There was something about her whole demeanor that rubbed Gu Zi the wrong way. It wasnât overt, but she couldnât shake the feeling that Chen Ting was trying to draw a very deliberate contrast between herself and Gu Ziâs current, visibly pregnant form.
Technically speaking, there was nothing wrong with what she was doingâjust an employee coming by to pay respects to her boss. But the styling⊠the careful effort to look demure and sexy at the same time? It reeked of calculation. Gu Zi didnât need anyone to spell it out. A womanâs sixth sense never lied.
A quick glance at Sun Yi confirmed itâshe, too, was watching Chen Ting with a face full of thinly veiled disdain. So it wasnât just in Gu Ziâs head.
Su Shen, to his credit, didnât accept the gift. He was about to politely decline when Chen Yuâoblivious as everâhappily stepped forward to take it on his behalf.
âYou didnât have to bring anything! Itâs great just having you here,â he said cheerfully. âHave you had lunch? Want to sit down and have some fruit?â
