Chapter 1175: Extreme Care
Gu Zi pounded softly on his chest, tears spilling from her eyes as her voice broke. āSu Shen, do you not want me anymore? Do you think Iām fat now? Ugly? You donāt even hold me, donāt come close to me⦠If you didnāt want me, why did you get me pregnant in the first place? Why, Su Shen?ā
For a moment, Su Shen stood frozenāthen realization dawned. She wasnāt unwell in the physical senseāthis was emotional. Hormonal. Psychological. And the panic that rose in his chest was swift and fierce.
He reached out immediately, his voice gentler than silk. āGu Zi⦠how could I possibly dislike you? Youāre still my girl. My gorgeous, beautiful girl. Youāre not fat! Youāre glowing. Please donāt cry, darling⦠donāt cry.ā
As he spoke, he carefully wiped away her tears, his fingertips barely brushing her delicate skin, terrified that the calluses on his hands might hurt her.
She didnāt know it, but every tear that rolled down her cheek felt like a dagger to his chest. And he blamed himself. The doctor had warned him about mood swingsāhow pregnancy hormones could send emotions into chaos. But still, he hadnāt been thoughtful enough. Hadnāt noticed early enough. Hadnāt cared for her heart the way he should have.
Gu Zi, observing the tenderness in his eyes, the guilt swimming just beneath his gaze, softened a little. It didnāt seem like he was lying. So she looked up at him with a pout and asked, āThen why havenāt you been holding me when we sleep?ā
Ah. So that was it.
Su Shen sighed, somewhere between amusement and helplessness. āMy darling girl⦠Iām still a man. When Iām that close to you, Iām afraid I might not be able to control myself. And believe meāyou havenāt gotten ugly. Not one bit. Your skin is glowing. Youāre breathtaking.ā
She narrowed her eyes, still not entirely convinced. Looping her arms around his neck, she leaned in and murmured coyly, āI donāt believe you⦠unless you kiss me. Right now.ā
Su Shen chuckled, the deep affection in his eyes unmistakable. He tilted her chin up and kissed herāsoftly at first, as if afraid she might shatter in his hands. But desire, long restrained, had a way of warming even the most careful lips. His kiss deepened, wandering from her lips to her slender neck, his hands instinctively drawn to the softness of her body, now fuller, more voluptuous.
Even then, he held back, mindful of her condition, yet unable to ignore the heat coiling inside him.
āGu Zi,ā he whispered, voice thick, āI kissed you⦠now sleep, alright?ā
But Gu Zi, already flushed, whispered back, āThe doctor said itās safe in the second trimester. We can⦠tonight.ā
Her words hit him like a switch thrown in the darkāan invitation he had no will to refuse. Still, his movements remained deliberate, reverent. He helped her out of her sleepwear, carefully avoiding the gentle swell of her belly, touching her as though she were made of glass.
He kissed her again, this time letting his lips linger longer, breathing in the scent of her skin, now subtly tinged with that warm, almost maternal sweetness that drove him half-mad with tenderness.
She welcomed his touch, the pleasure returning to her body like a long-lost friend. She sighed softly, her limbs relaxing under his fingers, her trust in him complete.
He continued with utmost care, never once forgetting the life growing within her. Every movement was an act of devotionāmeasured, protective, restrained. And when her body trembled with release and her fingers curled into the sheets, he held her through it, guiding her gently through every wave.
Afterward, he cleaned her up meticulously, dabbing away the sweat from her brow, pulling the blankets up to her chin, then drawing her close to him. One arm tucked behind her head, the other rhythmically patting her back, as if soothing both her and their unborn child to sleep.
Gu Zi was already drifting off, exhaustion pulling her into slumber, though somewhere in the back of her mind she knew: Su Shen hadnāt let himself finish. Heād stoppedāfor her. Just like always.
And in that moment, she felt safer than she ever had.
Later that night, she dreamed.
In her dream, she stood on the edge of a high cliff, the wind cold against her skin. A large truck came careening down a slope below, speeding faster and faster before crashing violently into a massive boulder. It flipped onto its side, crumpling like paper. From inside, someone was screamingācalling for help. But no matter how hard she looked, she couldnāt make out who it was.
