Chapter 1184: Going Back To Guangcheng
Gu Zi choked back sobs as she listened to Li Huaâs situation over the phone. Her voice, usually steady, trembled with helplessness.
Thousands of miles away in a foreign land, she could do nothing but ache from afar. Even if she boarded a plane that very instant, it would be like pouring a cup of water onto a blazing infernoâutterly useless. The suffering Li Hua was enduring had to be borne alone, and Gu Ziâs heart twisted with pain. How could she not feel wretched?
Su Shen, too, understood that the situation had gone far beyond the mere issue of five thousand yuan. It was no longer just a matter of compensation. If this wasnât handled properly, it wouldnât be only Li Hua who would sufferâthe entire Sister Huaâs Gourmet Shop business the two women had built together was at stake. They couldnât allow themselves to be manipulated.
And so, before hanging up the phone, Su Shen gave Jin Long a clear instruction. âHold the situation down for nowâwhatever happens, donât admit weâre paying them a cent.â
Watching Gu Ziâs anguish, Su Shen felt as if a blade had been driven through his own chest. The pain in her eyes mirrored his own.
âGu Zi,â he said softly, âwe canât do anything from this far away. Thatâs probably exactly why the Gu family dared to go after Sister Huaâs Gourmet Shopâthey knew we werenât in Guangcheng. Iâm sorry to make you go through this, but I think we need to head back.â
Gu Zi was momentarily stunned.
âBut itâs such a long journey. By the time we get there, wouldnât it be too late? And what about the children?â she asked, worried.
âThe train would take too long, yes,â Su Shen replied calmly. âBut the plane wonât. We can take a flight back. As for the children, weâll ask Chen Yu and his wife to help look after them for a few days. That can be arranged. Right now, the most urgent thing is to deal with whatâs happening at Sister Huaâs Gourmet Shop.â
Suddenly, Gu Zi felt foolish. Of courseâthere were airplanes. In her distress, she had forgotten the obvious. Flying would eliminate both time and distance, and while plane tickets were pricey in this day and age, their finances could easily afford them now. Su Shen had his channels too.
As for the three children, the Gao family next door already had their hands full, and Gao Ming was practically living at the Su household. There was no way the Gaos had the bandwidth to help out. Entrusting the children to Sun Yi, howeverâthat was a decision she could be completely at ease with.
She nodded, determination returning to her eyes. âLetâs do it your way.â
Once their decision was made, Su Shen got to work immediately, taking care of the arrangements.
Gu Zi sat on the couch, forcing herself to calm down. Gradually, her racing thoughts settled. Looking back on the path that had led her here, she realized something important: the major turning points in the original storyâthose couldnât be changed. They were locked in by fate. But the smaller details, the texture of each moment, those were pliable. And now that she was here, an anomaly in this storyline, she could nudge things toward a better ending.
In the original plotline, Sister Huaâs Gourmet Shop had never existed. It was Gu Zi who had partnered with Li Hua to create it after crossing over. The accident that happened to Lin Chengâwhich had once crippled Lin Cheng in the original storyâhad been altered by her intervention. He hadnât lost the use of his legs, thanks to her help.
So now, the misfortune had been redirected to Sister Huaâs Gourmet Shop. One blow exchanged for another. If she had been able to change Lin Chengâs fate, then surely, by returning now, she could change this one too.
That afternoon, a black sedan from the Chen family arrived punctually outside their gate. Chen Xi climbed out of the passenger seat, dressed in the universityâs spring athletic uniformâa light gray jacket over a crisp white T-shirt, matching sneakers on his feet.
The outfit was nothing special, but a closer look revealed the details: imported sneakers, and a sleek mechanical watch gleaming on his wrist. It was the effortless swagger of someone born into wealthâa proper second-generation rich kid.
With long strides, he walked up to the door and knocked confidently. Gu Zi opened it and invited him in.
âGu Zi,â he said brightly, âI got called to the office before class even ended. Turns out my brother called the university himself, told me to get home right away. Thatâs when I found out you two are heading out of town. My brother asked me to bring the driver over and pick up the kids. As for Big Yellow, donât worryâweâll send someone over every day to take care of him. You two just go without a worry.â
Gu Zi blinked. The speed at which Su Shen and the Chen family had mobilized was impressive.
âThank you,â she said with genuine gratitude. âThis really was all very sudden.â
Chen Xi waved it off with a grin. âNo need to be polite! Youâve no idea how happy I was to hear the news. Ever since my brother pissed off my sister-in-law, the tension in our house has been unbearable. Iâve been the one getting the brunt of their moods every day. Now, with the kids staying at our place, they wonât dare argue in front of them. Theyâve even arranged for a nanny just to take care of the kids. Finally, I can enjoy a little peace and quiet!â
He shrugged dramatically, clearly relishing the reprieve. Sure, the kids were a bit rambunctiousâbut they were also genuinely adorable.
After spending time with the Su family children, Chen Xi found he no longer harbored his usual disdain for kids. In fact, little Su Leâthose big eyes, round cheeks, and milky white skinâlooked just like a sticky rice dumpling. She was so cute, it was almost dangerous.
Seeing how enthusiastic Chen Xi was about taking the children, Gu Zi felt reassured. She gave him a few last-minute reminders.
âI really appreciate all of this. Just a few things to keep in mindâSu Bing is incredibly capable, but his mood can swing like a pendulum. Make sure the nanny doesnât push him too hard or get too close. He can handle everything on his ownâcompletely self-sufficient.â
