Chapter 1210: I Want My Mommy
Chen Xi eyed the suspicious-looking bowl placed before him, his brows furrowing in mild horror. âSu Bing, is this the so-called delicacy you made from the grass we yanked up earlier today? It looks⊠dubious at best. Black and slimyâand youâre calling this delicious? Iâm not even sure itâs edible!â
Before Su Bing could retort, Su Li jumped in with solemn, almost ceremonial formality. âUncle Chen Yu, Auntie Sun Yi, Big Brother Chen Xiâour brother told us that in your home, we must be polite. When it comes to meals, we wait for the elders to take the first bite before we start. This is something Brother made especially for youâitâs really good! Back home, whenever our mom had time, sheâd make this for us. You should all try it!â
For all his mischief, Su Li did tend to listen to Su Bingâespecially when it came to rules of etiquette. And if Su Bing said they must wait for the adults to eat first, then so be it. Even if his stomach was growling like a tiger in the zoo, he wasnât going to sneak a bite. But heavens help him if they didnât dig in soonâhe was practically drooling already.
Sun Yi looked at the three children, touched by their well-mannered restraint. She offered them a warm smile. âYouâre all at home here, sweethearts. Donât fuss about who eats first. Chen Xi, donât be so picky. If you donât want to eat it, fineâbut donât go criticizing something Su Bing made with so much care before youâve even tried it. Personally, I think it looks rather refreshing. Just looking at it gives me a sense of cool reliefâperfect for hot summer days.â
With that, she picked up her spoon, scooped half a mouthful of the mysterious concoction, and took a bite. The moment it touched her tongue, a delicate herbal fragrance burst across her taste buds, layered with the rich, velvety creaminess of the milk. The black jelly, unassuming in appearance, was bouncy and wonderfully smooth. She swallowed and sighed, eyes lighting up. âOh my, this is divine. Absolutely delicious.â
Chen Yu, watching his wife rave, assumed she was just playing along to keep the kids happy. Still, he scooped a spoonful himselfâhalf-distracted, expecting little. But one bite in and his eyes widened. âIâve traveled far and wide, eaten delicacies from every corner of the country, and yet Iâve never tasted this! Itâs refreshing, soothing, and utterly delightful!â
Both husband and wife dove back in with enthusiasm, spoon after spoon disappearing like magic. Meanwhile, Chen Xi looked between them, suspicious. Was this some coordinated act to please the kids? He eyed the black jelly again. Su Bing had gone to great lengths to make it⊠maybe heâd just give it a try, out of courtesy.đ§đłđŠâŻđđŠđ·đŻđđŁđŠđ.đžđ°đ
Tentatively, he took a bite.
To his surprise, the dessert was cold, herbaceous, sweet, and unlike anything heâd tasted before. Somehow, impossibly, it was good. Refreshing, even. Who knew eating grass could be⊠enjoyable?
The kids needed no further invitation. They began wolfing theirs down with glee. Only Su Le, the youngest, took her time, nibbling with ladylike precision. Everyone else finished their first bowls in a flash. And once they learned there was more chilling in the kitchen, they each asked for secondsâstomachs full, but spirits insatiable.
Chen Xi let out a satisfied burp. He was officially converted. Su Bingâs wild culinary experiment had somehow become a mealtime revelation.
From that night on, every meal Chen Xi ate at home became an event to look forward to. He began turning down invitations from friends to dine at fancy restaurants. After all, nothing they served compared to Su Bingâs down-to-earth, unexpectedly divine dishes.
Initially, chauffeuring the children back and forth had felt like an exhausting chore. But as the days passed, Chen Xi found himself growing oddly attached to the little rascals. A week in, and he couldnât imagine the house without them. Worse yet, if Su Bing returned to the Su household⊠who would cook for him then?
That worry became a reality the next day.
Su Shen arrived at the Chen residence carrying gifts from their hometownâa variety of rustic specialties, the kind of items that screamed heritage with heart. His mission, however, was clear: it was time to bring the children home. Now that he was back, there was no longer any reason for the kids to stay at the Chen residence.
Chen Xi had just returned with the trio when he heard the news. His throat tightened, words catching like burrs. Su Bing had promised to make ice cream today, and now it looked like heâd miss out.
He couldnât even find a respectable excuse to delay their departure. How was he supposed to say: Su Shen, would you mind letting your son stay the night just to make me dessert?
Chen Xi was supposed to be the adult. The responsible one. And yet somehow, heâd been the one looked after and pampered. Su Bing had utterly spoiled himâhis taste buds were ruined, his waistline expanding dangerously.
Just then, Su Le, upon seeing her father, squealed in delight. She bounded toward him, wrapping her tiny arms around his leg and scanning him head to toe like a pint-sized investigator.
âDaddy, whereâs Mommy? Youâre hiding her somewhere, arenât you? Lele wants Mommy!â
That pulled both Su Bing and Su Liâs attention. They turned toward their father, expressions filled with questions they hadnât dared voice until now. Su Bing spoke first, cautiously. âDaddy⊠Mom didnât come to get us. Is she at home resting?â
Su Li, as always, cut straight to the point. âDaddy, did you make Mommy mad? Did she dump you and send you back alone? Iâm saying this nowâif you two split up, Iâm choosing to live with Mommy!â
