Chapter 1225: Keep Your Voices Down
Su Shenâs expression had softened considerably. His gaze drifted once more to the hospital bed, where Gu Zi lay resting in peaceful slumber.
The exhaustion of childbirth still lingered faintly in her features, but sleep was gently smoothing away the strain. A delicate smile curled at the corners of her lips, as if she were dreaming of something tender and warm.
A subtle ache stirred in Su Shenâs chest. For a long time, he had carried a gnawing sense of guilt, but now, seeing her like this, some of that weight began to lift. His beloved wife had endured the harrowing pain of labor to bring their child into the worldâfor him. Such unwavering devotion, such selfless love⊠It humbled him.
In that quiet moment, Su Shen made a silent vow: for the rest of his life, he would cherish and protect her with every ounce of strength he had. Whatever peace and happiness she had now, he would ensure it never left her again.
Su Li and little Lele, their manners uncannily mature for their age, sat quietly by Gu Ziâs bedside. Neither of them spoke, nor did they make a fuss. They simply watched her, their wide eyes filled with quiet reverence.
To them, this was their motherânot just in name, but in spirit. Without her, their young lives would never have known the warmth, love, and happiness they now took for granted. She was even more precious to them than a birth mother.
A few moments later, Su Bing and Su Jing returned with bags of food. But when they saw Gu Zi fast asleep, they instinctively lowered their voices and tiptoed inside. The entire room had settled into a hush.
Su Shen turned to them and said calmly, âSu Jing, take the kids home first. Bring back some clean clothes and wash the ones Gu Zi changed out of. Iâll stay and watch over her.â
Su Jing nodded without question. She set the bags down quietly, then shepherded the children out one by one. The door clicked shut behind them. Silence fell like a blanket.
Now, it was just Su Shen, the woman he loved, and their newborn. He eased into the chair by the bed, his gaze never leaving them. Time passed slowly in that golden hush. He could have sat there forever.
But as all tranquility tends to do in real life, it didnât last.

A few minutes later, the door burst open as another mother was wheeled into the room. She had also just given birth, but unlike Su Ziâs peaceful arrival, this one brought an entourageâa loud, insufferably noisy entourage. The moment they entered, the atmosphere shattered.
Su Shenâs eyes darkened as he watched Gu Ziâs previously relaxed brow begin to furrow. She shifted slightly in her sleep, clearly disturbed by the rising cacophony of chatter. She was still resisting wakefulness, clinging to her dreams, but it was obvious she was being dragged back to reality.
His gaze shifted to the other bed. The new arrival, a young woman with a ghostly pallor, sat propped against the pillows, her newborn swaddled in her arms. Around her hovered a chorus of older relatives, who immediately launched into a tirade of complaints, as if the poor girl had committed an unforgivable sin.
âAnother daughter?!â a middle-aged woman barked. âHow are we going to explain this to your in-laws? That family isnât some small-time clanâtheyâve been master brewers for generations! The craft passes from father to son, not daughter to daughter. If you canât give them a son, your mother-in-lawâs going to send you straight back here!â
âAnd donât forget,â another aunt chimed in bitterly, âthey probably already have another woman lined up for your husband. You think youâre irreplaceable? If you canât bear a son, there are plenty of women out there who can! Didnât I give you all those herbal remedies and folk prescriptions to help with conceiving a boy? Worked for everyone else. But youâuseless! Still gave birth to a money-losing girl!â
A young man leaning against the window lit a cigarette and puffed moodily, clearly enjoying the spotlight. âSis, if your husbandâs family asks for the dowry back, you better figure out how to pay it. Donât even think about my apartment. That money was for my wedding, remember? My fiancĂ©eâs not just anyoneâyou know what kind of family she comes from.â
The woman on the bed said nothing. Her face was drained of color, her eyes hollow and unfocused as she listened to the relentless barrage from her family. Whatever she was thinking, she kept it locked tightly inside. But Su Shen didnât care about her inner turmoil. All he knew was that this raucous mob was disturbing his wifeâs hard-earned rest.
He stood up, his voice suddenly cutting through the noise like a sword through silk. âThis is a hospital room,â he said coldly. âPlease keep your voices down. My wife is resting. And no smoking in here.â
The family, already in a foul mood over the gender of the newborn, instantly bristled. The middle-aged woman turned on him with a sneer. âWho do you think you are, telling us how to speak? You think you bought the whole ward? We can say whatever we like.â
The young man, now clearly feeling provoked, took a long drag from his cigarette and spat, âWho the hell do you think you are? Trying to play the big man? Do you even know who my future father-in-law is? I tell you, just hearing his name would scare the crap out of you.â
But Su Shen wasnât interested in hearing names. He crossed the room in three strides, grabbed the man by the collar, and dragged himâphysicallyâout of the room.
The cigarette flared and hit the manâs lip, scalding it, and he yelped in pain. He opened his mouth, about to unleash a string of curses, but the moment he met Su Shenâs icy gaze, he froze.
That lookâit was the kind of glare that could slice through steel.
Su Shenâs voice was low, but every syllable carried lethal weight. âI donât care who your future father-in-law is. Smoke outside. And if you dare wake my wife again, try me.â
The young man went completely silent, all his bravado crumbling into dust.
Just then, the middle-aged woman rushed out after them, clawing at Su Shenâs sleeve and howling like a banshee. âYou brute! What kind of man puts his hands on someone over a few words? This is a law-abiding country! Iâll call the policeâI will! Let go of my son right now!â
