He sat on the chapel roof, staring at the eastern mountains. The construct's words echoed in his mind.

Seris climbed up beside him.
"You're brooding."
"I'm thinking."
"Same thing."
She sat down.
"Dorian's birds saw something last night. After the construct left."
"What?"
"A figure. In the forest. Watching. Didn't approach. Didn't leave a trace. Just... watched."
"Harvester?"
"No. Different. No frost. No Chaos signature." Seris paused. "Something else."
[γECHOγ: Unknown observer detected. No hostile intent measured. Identity: unknown. Recommendation: caution.]
"One of Umbra's spies," Varyan said.
"House Umbra? The hidden house?"
"They're real. And they're watching."
"How do you know?"
"Because the construct's visit would have been noticed. Anyone with the ability to detect cosmic energy would have felt it. And House Umbra has been watching fragment-bearers for three thousand years."
Seris was quiet.
"That's... unsettling."
"It's reality. We're not the only players in this game. We're not even the most important ones."
"Then what are we?"
Varyan looked at the stars.
"Survivors. That's all we've ever been."
They sat in silence.
In the forest below, the figure watched.
They didn't move. Didn't blink. Didn't breathe.
They just watched.
And when dawn broke, they vanished.

House Umbra's Closed Eye (the spymaster) has dispatched someone to watch the academy. Not to attack. Not to interfere. Just to watch.
Varyan senses something is wrong. He doesn't know who. He doesn't know why.
That's the point. Umbra operates in shadows. You don't see them until they want to be seen.
