Chapter 995: Chapter 995: The Hughes Familyâs Secret
Caleb Mametâs gaze was sharp, filled with intense killing intent. His voice was deep and hoarse, âShe doesnât want to be exposed yet, I can cooperate with her, butâŠâ
He could not tolerate Xaviera Evans being in danger alone, nor could he imagine what was happening at the Hughes Villa at the moment. The agony of not being able to contact her was too unbearable.
Cory Hughes returned to the villa and watched Calebâs car leave through the surveillance system, finally letting out a sigh of relief. Unbeknownst to him, the car stopped after getting out of the surveillance range, and Caleb swiftly got out.
On the other hand, Mrs. Hughes had to leave the guest room out of fear of being discovered. Cory probably thought that even if the antidote worked, Xaviera wouldnât wake up so quickly, so he didnât bother guarding her.
Xaviera quickly unlocked the door and headed towards Nidya Hughesâ room, where Mrs. Hughes had said her motherâs belongings were stored. If she had enough time, she would also search Coryâs study, perhaps finding unexpected treasures.
Xaviera moved lightly and nimbly, avoiding several servants. She quickly found Nidyaâs room and the door was conveniently unlocked. The luxurious room made it evident that the Hughes family truly cherished their daughter.
Once inside, she went straight for the dressing table, where several jewelry boxes were displayed. The word âAutumnâ was engraved on each piece of jewelryâher motherâs belongings. How could Nidya hoard these valuable belongings without feeling any shame?
Xaviera found a large leather bag in the room and put all the jewelry in it. Suddenly-
Her body tensed up. She clearly sensed someone behind her, and the light, expert breathing indicated it might be a skilled individual. Her eyes turned cold, and she slowly bent down to take a dagger from her boot.
Just as she was about to turn around and counterattack, the person grabbed her wrist. The dagger fell to the carpet, and she stumbled into a familiar, warm embrace. The familiar scent of sandalwood wafted around her, and she realized who it was.
The man had been watching her rummaging around for quite a while and now spoke with amusement in his voice. âMrs. Mamet, canât your family afford you anymore, so youâve come to steal from the Hughes family?â
Xaviera looked surprised, only now wondering how Caleb entered Nidyaâs room.
Caleb gently pinched her soft cheek, gazing at her adoringly. He seemed to enjoy her surprised expression, reminiscent of a small hamster.
âMrs. Mamet.â
With a whisper imbued with huskiness and allure, Xaviera suddenly raised her eyes. The manâs cool lips gently kissed her forehead before he whispered teasingly in her ear, âIt took you so long to find this place, Mrs. Mamet? You havenât even been to Coryâs study yet. Are you sure you donât need my help?â
Xaviera widened her eyes, then furrowed her brow. So Caleb had purposely crawled in through the window just to taunt her a few times?
She had been planning to seek help, but the cunning old fox Cory had blocked the signal. Unable to contact Caleb, Xaviera had no choice but to carry out the mission alone. Wouldnât it be humiliating to admit she needed Calebâs help at this point?
Xaviera pondered for a moment, then said with determination, âNo need, youâre quite busy, arenât you? You donât need to bother with such trivial matters!â
Seeing her stubbornness, Calebâs lips quirked up into a smile, and he lightly asked, âAre you sure?â
His voice carried an undertone of mockery that Xaviera saw as blatant ridicule. She couldnât possibly oblige him, so she nodded vigorously, âYes, I donât need your help!â
Caleb stroked his chin with his long fingers, his voice filled with clear amusement, âWell, if Mrs. Mamet doesnât need me, Iâll just leave. I was planning to accompany you in finding the Hughes familyâs secret.â
The Hughes familyâs secret?
Xavieraâs eyes widened in an instant, realizing that Caleb must have found clues regarding the matter. Otherwise, he wouldnât have come through the window, indicating that this matter was of great importance.
âMrs. Mamet must be very interested in this secret because it has something to do with Mrs. Hughes.â
Xavieraâs curiosity was suddenly piqued. She wanted to investigate Mrs. Hughes not because she had saved her life, but because her Black Tide account mysteriously failed to yield any useful information on Mrs. Hughes. All she could find was that Mrs. Hughes was a daughter of an ordinary family before marrying into the Hughes family. After her marriage, the entire family had perished, leaving no trace.
Such an identity might very well be fabricated, with all relatives dead as a deliberate means to thwart investigation and cover up Mrs. Hughesâ true identity.
