Chapter 1043: Chapter 1043: His Face is Thicker Than the City Wall
Everyone was stunned for a few seconds; the upper class people here were not short of money, and all they sought was fame and power. They could now meet Manning Warwick at the apprenticeship banquet, even personally introduced by Zora Hughes. This was a golden opportunity, so why would Xaviera Evans refuse it?
"Sir Hughes, didnât you say your granddaughter didnât want to attend? But..." the speaker pointed at a woman not far away, "isnât that..."
He had seen Xaviera before and knew she was Cory Hughesâ granddaughter. Finding her at Cloud House now, he couldnât help but be surprised.
As Cory turned around and saw her, the smile on his face almost froze.
Xaviera? How did she get here?
After a moment of silence, he suddenly realized that Xaviera had turned down the invitation earlier just because she was embarrassed. However, she later decided she couldnât miss out, so she sneaked into Cloud House by claiming that she was part of the Hughes family, hoping to approach Manning Warwick.
Cory snorted coldly and quickly went up to question her. Hearing Coryâs voice, Xaviera calmly turned around.
The atmosphere became awkward in an instant. She hesitated for a few seconds, then, with indifference, turned away, as if these people did not exist at all.
Coryâs face darkened; Xaviera wanted to get closer to Manning Warwick through Zoraâs connections but still showed no respect to the Hughes family? Did she really think that entering Cloud House would earn her Manning Warwickâs appreciation? Without Zoraâs introduction, how could Manning Warwick possibly pay attention to her!
Xaviera was humiliating him in front of everyone. Frustrated, he blurted out, "Xaviera, how could you ignore your elders?"
Xaviera paused and a mocking smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Cory could hardly suppress his anger, but he couldnât make a scene in front of so many guests. Holding back his rage, he pretended to be gentle and said, "Xaviera, didnât you turn down Zoraâs invitation earlier? What made you change your mind? Did you deceive the staff to sneak in here?"
Upon hearing this, everyoneâs eyes were filled with ridicule and disdain. Zora had invited Xaviera long ago, but she had clearly refused. Now she came here after deceiving the staff. What was she up to?
In the end, she was just jealous that Zora could become Manning Warwickâs apprentice and didnât want to be overshadowed by her, but she also didnât want to miss the chance to meet Manning Warwick.
Cory glanced at her condescendingly, his eyes full of contempt, and began to lecture: "Xaviera, you turned down Zora before, and she was upset for a long time. Now that youâve entered Cloud House only thanks to Zora, shouldnât you express your gratitude to her? I know no one has taught you before about propriety, justice, integrity, and honor, but now that you are a part of the Hughes family, I have to teach you how to be a person!"
Xaviera frowned, looking at Cory with puzzlement in her eyes. She wondered how Cory had the nerve to say these things. His face must be thicker than a city wall!
She entered Cloud House thanks to Zoraâs influence? How ridiculous!
Seeing the situation, the attendant nearby knew that Cory was misunderstanding and quickly stepped forward to explain: "Mr. Hughes, itâs not like that. Actually, Miss Evans came here to..."
However, Cory interrupted him, "Shut up! Youâre just a servant. This is our family business; itâs not your place to interfere! Xaviera, you hurt Zora before. Even if you donât thank her, you should apologize! You canât be as willful as before, your grandfather is only thinking for your own good."
Xaviera didnât even lift her eyelids, scoffing, "I apologize to her?"
"Xaviera, weâre all family. Zora is magnanimous, and she wonât hold a grudge over such a trivial matter, but I canât let you continue acting so recklessly. If the family can tolerate your behavior, will you also behave like this outside? Hurry up and apologize to Zora!" Cory ordered.
Xaviera quietly stared at Coryâs pretentious demeanor and suddenly felt curious. How would he feel if he knew that the Russell family was also hosting a banquet here today?
Xaviera blinked and spoke in an indifferent tone, "Sir Hughes, how are you so sure that I entered Cloud House because of Zoraâs apprenticeship banquet?"
Cory sneered, "Xaviera, everyone who can enter Cloud House needs to make a reservation. Today, Iâve booked the entire first floor of Cloud House. If youâre not here on the pretext of attending the apprenticeship banquet, then what else could it be? Even if you made a last-minute reservation, it would be too late!"
The anxious attendant tried to explain, "Mr. Hughes, Miss Evans did indeed have a reservation, and it has nothing to do with the Hughes family. She is here to..."
"Heh! How much money did Xaviera give you to defend her so eagerly?" Cory coldly said, his eyes filled with derision.
