Xaviera Evans looked at Cory Hughes with interest, eager to see his shocked and regretful expression of knowing the truth. What would his reaction be when he learned that the mastermind behind all of this was Zora Hughes, and that the one who disgraced the Hughes family was his most beloved granddaughter?
Shortly after, Jonas Hughes sent someone to bring over a delicate sandalwood box. Just by looking at the box, one could tell the item inside was of great value. The bodyguard handled it with extreme care, fearing that he might damage the precious object inside.
Zora Hughes flashed a sweet smile, took the microphone and spoke softly, "Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the delay and for the unpleasant scenes youâve witnessed. At the moment, we donât have Mr. Heningerâs porcelain carving, but we do have a rare artifact handcrafted by the head of the Heninger family."
She then shyly turned to Xaviera Evans and smiled, "Xaviera, Iâm sorry. I donât want to embarrass you, but we canât offend the Heninger Family. Iâm the one who has to present this porcelain carving now. I hope you donât blame me."
Zora Hughes stared intensely at Xavieraâs eyes, trying to detect a hint of anger. But Xavieraâs gaze remained calm throughout, as if all this had nothing to do with her. She even cracked a smile, "Of course, I wonât."
Xaviera looked up, meeting Zoraâs gaze, a glint of mockery flashing in her eyes. Zora shivered, wondering why Xaviera could remain so indifferent.
Cory Hughes spoke up discontentedly, "Zora, what do you have to apologize for? If she hadnât messed up, would you have needed to clean up her mess? What right does she have to blame you? Whether she blames you or not, sheâs no longer a part of the Hughes family anyway!"
Zora calmly reasoned, "Grandfather, donât speak of Xaviera like that. She probably didnât mean to do what she did, and there must be a reason behind it. Xaviera, even though you made a mistake today, youâre still part of the Hughes family. We will keep this incident under wraps and we hope everyone present can give her another chance. Sheâs young and will surely not make the same blunder again."
Her kindness and tolerance were unmatchable. Not only did she console her grandfather, but she also defended Xaviera. She was admired for her magnanimity worthy of the Hughes familyâs daughter, who although snatched from her position of responsibility by Xaviera, held no resentment and instead, consistently covered up for Xaviera. She even persuaded everyone to keep the incident confidential so that Xavieraâs reputation would not be affected.
Seeing that Xaviera remained silent, Zora gently asked, "Xaviera, promise me, will you stop doing foolish things?"
Xaviera slightly raised her eyes, the coldness in her gaze made Zora feel that Xaviera was not taking her seriously at all. No matter how much Zora performed in front of everyone, how much she slandered, Xaviera simply didnât care.
Impulsively, Zora pressed her teeth together and asked, "Xaviera, donât you have anything to say?"
All eyes turned to Xaviera, the woman who had ruined the Hughes Groupâs grand opening ceremony by bringing a fake. At this point, she could only plead for mercy.
Just then, Xaviera smiled lazily, "No."
Zoraâs facial expression stiffened, attempting to look helpless, she reasoned, "Xaviera, I know you may be angry that I have taken your place today, but I had no choice..."
"Miss Hughes," Xaviera cut her off, raising an eyebrow, "I never said I blamed you. I really have nothing to say."
Xaviera genuinely had nothing to say. She only wanted to see the reaction of the Hughes family when they learned the truth. Moreover, she wanted to know whether Nidya Hughes, the woman whom she had severed her mother-daughter bond with, would still have the audacity to seek her out.
Zora, feeling somewhat wronged, stated, "Since Xaviera doesnât want to speak, letâs not waste any more time. After all, today is the inauguration of the New City Plaza."
She then straightened her back and raised her voice, "Now I will present to you all the masterpiece of the head of the Heninger family!"
Zora gave an embarrassed smile, "This collaboration is very important to the Hughes Group. Xaviera is still young and has never managed a cooperation project before, which is why she went astray. As her sister, I should bear the responsibility for her. Please do not blame her."
Having said this, Zora opened the box, revealing an exquisitely made rose porcelain carving that glowed differently under the sunlight.
Seeing that porcelain carving, a hint of mockery appeared on Xavieraâs face.
