Chapter 1632: Chapter 1632: Parting on Bad Terms
Upon arrival at Maple House, Xaviera Evans was about to go upstairs to take a bath, but was embraced by Caleb Mamet and led to the backyard of Maple House. In a small pavilion, there were two lounge chairs, a table with hot coffee, and exquisite pastries.
"The moon is so round tonight, itâs the perfect time to enjoy the moonlight with you," Caleb said with a light sigh.
A gust of autumn wind blew by, causing Xaviera to shiver. Enjoying the moon outside in the middle of the night?
It seemed that Caleb noticed her shivering, as he undid the buttons on his coat and wrapped her petite body directly in his embrace. His voice, filled with amusement, reached her ears: "Youâre wearing so little. Are you cold?"
"Girls love to look pretty!" Xaviera sniffed.
Xaviera leaned in Calebâs embrace, her whole body warm. Yet she couldnât help but feel puzzled. Why had Caleb suddenly brought her to enjoy the moon? Was today some special day?
Before Xaviera could ask, Calebâs deep voice sounded, "Do you know why Todd Reiser came to find me?"
Xavieraâs face was full of confusion: "Whatâs the matter?"
A hint of mockery appeared at the corner of Calebâs mouth, "He really just wanted to reminisce. I had someone follow Todd Reiser and saw him going to the Mamet Old Mansion alone. He didnât bring anything with him and didnât contact anyone else."
"Todd Reiser hasnât been staying at the Reiser Villa recently and hasnât contacted Fiona Reiser either. It seems that the incident where Fiona impersonated you and falsely accused you has dealt a major blow to him, and he couldnât face Fiona for the time being."
Xaviera wondered, "Does he really not know about the Reiser familyâs actions? Did he really just come to reminisce with you?"
Caleb was silent for a moment before saying indifferently, "He is indeed a bit foolish, but he truly is different from the rest of the Reiser family. He is a kind-hearted person. When he came to see me today, he had no ill intentions."
But Xaviera shook her head, "Even if heâs kind-hearted, he should know that five years ago, Wayne Reiser abandoned you to go abroad, and your relationship with the Reiser family is already severed. Isnât it strange for him to try to reconnect with you now?"
Upon hearing her words, Caleb abruptly raised his eyes. His gaze held a trace of coldness, "Xaviera, heâs my friend. I hope you can trust him."
Xavieraâs body stiffened as she awkwardly pushed Caleb away, "But Iâm worried about you too. I think he has malicious intentions."
"You donât need to worry about my affairs," Caleb said indifferently. "Todd Reiser is my friend, and I have the right to decide whether to associate with him. Xaviera, you shouldnât meddle in this."
Xavieraâs heart plummeted instantly, an intense sourness filling her nostrils. She stood up abruptly, her face somewhat pale. This was the first time Caleb had ever spoken to her like this.
Caleb could sense the low atmospheric pressure emanating from her, and it made his heart tremble.
Xaviera put some distance between them, her voice cold, "Fine, since youâve already said that, from now on, I wonât bother with your business."
With Calebâs words echoing in her ears and her heart heavy, she turned around and said, "Iâm tired."
She left the backyard alone and entered the bathroom with her pajamas.
Caleb watched her leave, his lips pressed together. An hour later, he returned to the bedroom. Xaviera was already asleep, her small body curled up, pressing close to the inner side of the bed.
He wanted to reach out and hold her, but just as he was about to touch her, he noticed her tightly furrowed brows and rigid body. He immediately got up and left.
The next day.
When Xaviera woke up, the man beside her had already left. This made her even more depressed.
As she was about to go downstairs after washing up, she heard a voice from below, "Caleb, you finally agreed to see me!"
Todd Reiserâs voice carried a touch of guilt, "I trusted Fiona too much before, so I offended your wife. Is she still angry with me?"
"Perhaps." Calebâs voice was indifferent.
"Then Iâll go and apologize to her!"
Xaviera had originally wanted to have a good talk with Caleb, but her mood fell to rock bottom again at this moment. Caleb didnât care about her feelings at all. They had parted in disharmony over Todd Reiser the day before, and today he had invited Todd as a guest to their home. It was as if she meant nothing to him!
She loathed the Reiser family, loathed Todd Reiser, and she had an intuition that Todd Reiserâs visit to Caleb must be for some ulterior motive. Yet, Caleb still refused to listen to her.
Xavieraâs face darkened, and she lost her appetite for breakfast. She went back to the bedroom, changed her clothes, put on makeup, and carried her bag downstairs.
"Madam, breakfast is ready," Lucy said in a hurry.
Xaviera coldly replied, "I donât want to eat."
"But..." Lucy looked at Caleb, whose eyebrows were lowered, and he said nonchalantly, "If she doesnât want to eat, let it be. She can eat out."
"Mm, all right," Lucy walked out with a furrowed brow, feeling that the atmosphere today was strange.
