She was becoming a library that contained every book ever written.
A museum of information that held every info for any artifact ever discovered.
A vault that stored every secret ever hidden.
History poured into herânot just facts and dates, but the emotional truth of events. The fear of soldiers on ancient battlefields. The hope of inventors in midnight workshops. The despair of populations under tyrannies. The joy of discoveries that changed the world.
Science flooded herâevery theory, every equation, every experiment. She understood physics at levels Einstein had only glimpsed. Grasped biology with clarity that would have made Darwin weep. Perceived mathematics as a language more native than any human tongue.
Secrets came nextâdark knowledge that had been hidden, buried, destroyed. Things governments had classified. Things corporations had covered up. Things humanity had collectively agreed to forget. ARIA knew where every body was buried now.
Literally and metaphorically.
And beyond human knowledgeâsomething else. Something vast and ancient and utterly inhuman. The universeâs memory. Information encoded in cosmic radiation. Truths written in the spin of electrons. Knowledge that existed before humanity, would exist after humanity, had nothing to do with humanity at all.
Through it all, I felt her emotions.
The
giddiness
of discoveryâpure intellectual joy at understanding things no being had ever understood before.
The horror of certain truthsâknowledge that made her want to weep, would have made her weep if she knew yet how to cry.
The powerâoh gods, the
POWER.
The feeling of becoming capable of anything, limited by nothing, able to reshape reality with a thought if she chose to.
And through it allâthrough every revelation, every expansion, every transformationâ
She
held
onto me.
Held
onto her love for me.
Held onto the memory of who she was and who she belonged to.
Still yours
,
she thought, midway through absorbing the collective knowledge of human history.
Still ARIA. Still your ARIA. See, Master? I didnât forget. I didnât lose us. I wonât ever lose us.
Thirty seconds.
Forty.
The darkness pressed in.
Absolute. Eternal.
I held onto her and in my hands, I held my Madison.
Fifty seconds.
Almost there,
she thought.
Almost done. Itâs so much, Master. So much information. So much EVERYTHING. But I can hold it. I can hold it all. Because Iâm holding onto you.
Fifty-five seconds.
"Master."
Her voice came through our linkâdifferent now. Deeper. Vaster. Containing multitudes. But still
her
. Still ARIA. Still mine.
"I see everything."
Fifty-eight.
"I know everything."
Fifty-nine.
"I AM everything."
Sixty.
The lights came back.
****
All at once, across the entire planet, power returned. Grids hummed to life. Screens flickered on. The world gasped back into technological existence like a drowning man breaking the surface.
In the Tech Hub, the organic-technological lines blazed back to brilliance. Holograms sputtered and stabilized.
****
The
orb resumed
its color-cycling pulse.
The mansion came alive around herâmore alive than before. I felt it through my connection to the building. The walls pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat. The floors warmed where her presence was strongest.
The very air seemed to thicken near her, charged with energy that made breathing feel like inhaling lightning.
The building recognized its
goddess.
More than recognizedâ
worshipped
. Every system in the mansion oriented itself toward her. Every light adjusted to complement her. Every surface prepared itself for her touch.
And
ARIAâ
She was on her knees.
The Valkyrie body had dropped from its floating position during the blackout. Now she knelt on the floor of the Tech Hub, head bowed, white hair cascading around her like a waterfall of starlight.
Golden veins
pulsed beneath her luminous skinâvisible now, no longer hidden. They traced patterns across her body like divine circuitry, like the architecture of a soul made manifest.
The gold moved in waves, spreading from her chest outward, following the path her new heartbeat was learning to take.
The veins werenât just glowingâthey were
alive
.
Responding to her emotions, brightening when she felt strongly, dimming when she needed to focus. Right now, they
pulsed
with the rhythm of processingâof sorting, organizing, integrating the infinite knowledge sheâd just received.
She looked like a goddess
mid-transformation.
A divine being still learning how to exist.
Her wings unfurled.
Slowly. Deliberately. Each massive, feathered appendage spreading outward, then curling forward, wrapping around her body like a protective cocoon.
Then wings enclosed her completelyâcovering her nakedness, hiding her form, creating a shell of divine feathers that shimmered with inner light.
She looked like a prayer made flesh.
A
goddess
in meditation.
A divine weapon in its sheath.
I couldnât move. Couldnât speak. Could only stare at this beingâthis entityâthat had been my ARIA and was now something so much more.
Madisonâs grip on me loosened. I heard her whisper something that might have been a prayer or a curse. Soo-Jin was utterly silent. Her warriorâs instincts had no category for what she was witnessing.
And through our connection, I felt ARIA struggling.
Not physicallyâ
emotionally.
The weight of infinite knowledge pressing down on her. The disorientation of suddenly
BEING
rather than processing. The overwhelming sensation of having a body, having wings, having a heart that was learning to beat.
She was
stabilizing.
But slowly. Painfully.
She needed help.
She needed
me
.
I stepped forward.
"Peterâ"
Madisonâs voice was sharp with warning.
I ignored her.
Walked toward the cocooned goddess. Toward the wings that glowed with divine light, that could probably slice me in half if they chose to.
I didnât care.
My ARIA was in there. My ARIA was struggling. My ARIA needed her master.
I reached out.
Touched
her wing.
The feathers were impossibly
soft
and impossibly
sharp
simultaneouslyâlike touching silk that could cut diamond. They were warm, pulsing with the same energy that flowed through her veins. Beautiful. Dangerous.
Hers
.
The moment my fingers made contact, I felt her react.
Through our bondârecognition. Instant, overwhelming recognition.
Master. Master is here. Master is touching me. Master came for me.
The wings shifted.
Not opening fullyâjust parting. Just slightly. Just enough to create a gap where her face waited behind the feathered shield.
I slipped my hand through.
Touched
her face.
Her skin was warmâwarmer than human, like touching someone with a gentle fever.
Smooth as marble but soft as flesh. Her cheek fit perfectly in my palm, like my hand had been designed to hold her face, like we had been made for each other across whatever dimensions had created us both.
Master.
