Chapter 1165: Chapter 1163: Medicine Worth a Daughter
Seeing Old Mr. Mengâs carriage enter the Meng Family Mansion, Wufuâs carriage only then departed.
"Miss, it seems youâre not very eager to become a disciple of that old gentleman. Why is that? The Meng family indeed holds a notable position in Nanyue, and though there arenât many currently serving in the court, this old gentlemanâs family has produced four successful imperial examination candidates, which is quite prestigious," Jadeite asked curiously.
"You know, the Meng family is a scholarly family in Nanyue; their status and power should not be underestimated. But have you not considered that one day Nanyue will inevitably come up against Beiyan?" Wufu leaned on the welcoming pillow and spoke calmly.
Jadeite was stunned for a moment; she was also a wise person and immediately understood the meaning of Wufuâs words.
Unless Wufu doesnât end up with Ah Jiu, if the two really get married and Wufu becomes Ah Jiuâs Princess Consort, she will be considered Beiyan people. And Beiyanâs goal to reclaim Nanyue is only a matter of time, thus they would be opposed.
"Miss, are you worried about standing along with that old gentleman on opposite sides serving different masters?"
Wufu nodded.
Jadeite sighed lightly, "Miss is kind-hearted, thinking so far ahead."
"Itâs not about being kind-hearted, but after spending a long time together, feelings deepen, and in future dealings, one often becomes soft-hearted, Iâm merely trying to avoid such situations," Wufu said.
"That is in itself kindness," Jadeite said with a smile.
Mo Lan sat cross-legged to the side and spoke, "All under heaven unite and divide, divide and unite; if Nanyue had a wise ruler, it wouldnât face destruction. Even if overrun, Beiyan wouldnât slaughter endlessly. Miss, donât worry."
"Hmm. Iâm being sentimental," Wufu lay down and said, "Enough about that, the old man asked me to carve a small seal. There seems to be no good jade at home; letâs go to Auspicious Pavilion and see if we can find some fine Shoushan Jade for carving a small seal."
...
Old Mr. Meng was accustomed to his own ways. Although he was an old man, he didnât like to be disturbed by the younger generation. He lived alone in a small courtyard and often stayed in his residence outside the city â Songguan Residence.
It was the occasion of the Eight Immortals Celebrating Longevity that brought him to reside in the city mansion for a while, but even then, he didnât like the younger generation coming to pay respects, finding it bothersome and a mere formality.
Returning to his small courtyard and receiving the warm handkerchief from the servant to freshen his hands and face, he instructed Zhu Zhi to fetch a clean small porcelain bottle. He then took a pill from the bottle Wufu had given him and put it in the clean bottle before calling his trusted steward.
"Old He, take this to Imperial Doctor Li and have him see what this medicine is all about,"
The steward called Old He promptly accepted the task and left.
After he left, Zhu Zhi served a cup of tea and asked softly, "Does the old master suspect thereâs a problem with the medicine?"
"What could be the problem, just curious about the contents. That girl surely wouldnât give me a bottle of poison," Old Mr. Meng said irritably.
Zhu Zhi replied with a smile, "Of course, anyone noticed by the old master must have some exceptional qualities."
Old Mr. Meng sipped his tea and said, "Speaking of exceptional qualities, itâs hard to distinguish just yet. She merely caught my eye."
"Being favored by the old master is a fortune for Miss Wu, truly living up to her name, possessing all five fortunes,"
Old Mr. Meng chuckled. Being old, he spoke for a while before resting again. When he awoke, Old He had returned, and alongside him was the shameless old Imperial Doctor Li, relentlessly inquiring about the source of the pill while extolling the precious herbs within. Though it wouldnât resurrect the dead, it could sustain a life until a doctor intervened, and he shamelessly pleaded to procure one, valuing it as a daughterâs worth.
"Looks like the disciple banquetâs specifications shouldnât be modest," Old Mr. Meng murmured while touching the porcelain bottle.
