Chapter 1990: Chapter 1990: Gan Yujingâs Explanation
Shu Yu was still a bit puzzled. Yesterday, the incident with Cheng Jiatong was resolved behind closed doors in the Cheng family, and it was already evening when it was settled. How could the Gan family be so well-informed that they got the news early this morning?
While she was wondering, Gan Yujing explained.
It turns out that after Gan Yujing left the tavern yesterday, she went directly back to her motherâs house. She waited until Sister-in-law Ms. Liao returned and couldnât help but question her about Gan Ruiâs matchmaking.
Gan Yujing had always been dissatisfied with Ms. Liao, fundamentally due to the incident years ago when Gan Rui was almost harmed by Eldest Ganâs concubine. At that time, Gan Yujing had just married, and after her motherâs death, family affairs fell on Ms. Liaoâs shoulders, and as a result, her most beloved fourth brother nearly died under Ms. Liaoâs management.
Because of this incident, Gan Yujing not only doubted Ms. Liaoâs ability but also resented her own elder brother deeply. She even felt that they intended to harm her fourth brother to seize the Gan familyâs assets.
However, over the years, Gan Yujingâs view of Ms. Liao somewhat changed, and their relationship slightly eased.
Yet last year, this relationship took a sharp downturn because Gan Ruiâs previous fiancĂ©e was introduced by Gan Yujing, and the other party was still a relative of her husbandâs family.
As a result, the fiancĂ©e passed away, and the other party spread rumors everywhere that Gan Rui was cursed to cause his wifeâs death, leading to a falling out between the two families.
As the intermediary, Gan Yujing found herself unwelcome on both sides, becoming the target of criticism.
Thus, Gan Yujing had a discord with her elder brother and sister-in-law. Seeing Ms. Liao was finding a girl from a county town for Gan Rui in a hurry, she suspected it was aimed at her.
Luckily, she remained calm and did not directly barge into the box when seeing Ms. Liao and Shu Yu together.
After returning to her parental home, she inquired about the girlâs identity, only to be informed that Meng Han was not sought by Ms. Liao, but chosen by Gan Rui himself.
Gan Yujing was greatly surprised.
Moreover, the girl from the Meng family is not some obscure girl from a small family. This year, the Meng family received an imperial plaque, now grandly hanging at the entrance of the Meng familyâs escort agency.
In this aspect, the Gan family cannot compare.
Not to mention, Meng Hanâs cousin was Scholar Meng, who last year topped the county examinations, and his future sister-in-law is the currently renowned Wenâan County Lord.
Though the Gan family is wealthy, and Gan Rui is a scholar, a prominent family in this prefecture, when it comes to background, it might not necessarily surpass the current Meng family.
Added to this, Gan Rui and Meng Han were mutually fond of each other, and Gan Rui also confided in Gan Yujing that he would marry none but her. Naturally, Gan Yujing could not oppose.
Although she was dissatisfied with her elder brother and sister-in-law, she truly cared for Gan Rui. The girl she herself fancied had no faults, so why would she oppose?
Gan Yujing immediately discarded her prejudices, and harmoniously discussed with Ms. Liao about hosting the Meng family and proposing marriage to the Meng family.
Originally everything went smoothly, but unexpectedly after Gan Yujing returned to her room, she noticed the old womanâs strange demeanor, occasionally mentioning Cheng Jiatong.
Gan Yujing felt odd, and after several questions, she noticed a strange bracelet on the old womanâs wrist, which made her eyelids twitch fiercely.
Under her threatening interrogation, the old woman tearfully confessed everything, admitting she had been bribed by Cheng Jiatong and had not only leaked Gan Yujingâs whereabouts but also deliberately sowed discord between Gan Yujing and Ms. Liao, all to make Gan Ruiâs marriage handled by Gan Yujing.
