Upon hearing Lin Xiaoâs indifferent response, Ling Xi became visibly frustrated.
âIf I had known youâd treat me like this, I wouldnât have bothered saving you!â she huffed. âDo you have any idea what wouldâve happened if I hadnât stepped in? Youâd all be dead by now! And instead of showing a little gratitude, you act like I owe you something?â
Zhang Nu and the others could see how upset she was. Ling Xi still didnât understand Lin Xiaoâs condition, and they knew they had to explain.
âLing Xi, donât take it personally,â Zhang Nu said gently. âLin Xiao isnât trying to be rude. He was born with an emotional detachment.â
âThere are things we understand instinctively, but he doesnât. He doesnât feel emotions the way we do.â
Ling Xiâs anger wavered as she turned to Lin Xiao, a hint of pity in her gaze. She had always assumed that everyone experienced emotions the same wayâthat everyone could. But it turned out that there were people who couldnât.
âWait⊠really?â she muttered. âThatâs⊠thatâs kind of sad.â
She let out a small sigh. âFine, I wonât hold it against him.â
Zhang Nu smiled at her understanding. Ling Xi was a rare kind of spirit, kind, and compassionate. If there were more like her, the world would be a better place.
The four of them followed Ling Xi back to her dwelling. The place was tranquil, eerily soâit was as if she lived entirely alone. Zhang Nu, observing her youthful appearance, suddenly realized something.
âLing Xi, where are your parents?â he asked. âWe havenât seen any sign of them since we arrived.â
At his words, Ling Xiâs expression dimmed. Zhang Nu immediately regretted asking.
âThey disappeared when I was very young,â she admitted, her voice softened. âIâve been looking for them ever since⊠but⊠Iâm too much of a coward to leave this place.â
Zhang Nuâs heart clenched.
Coward? Was she joking? If not for Ling Xi, they would have died back there. She was anything but a coward.
âYouâre stronger than you think,â he told her. âIf not for you, we wouldnât have escaped today.â
Then, after a pause, he added, âIf you want, you could come with us. Weâll help you find your parents.â
Ling Xiâs eyes widened. She hesitated, unsure if Zhang Nu was serious.
âYou⊠really mean that?â she asked, her voice wavering. âI could⊠leave with you? But Iâm not as strong as you guysâŠâ
âThat doesnât matter.â Zhang Nu shook his head. âStrength isnât the only thing that counts. We all started somewhere. If you want to come with us, weâll grow stronger together.â
For a moment, Ling Xi actually considered it. But before she could give her answer, Lin Xiao suddenly spoke.
âAre you sure about this?â he asked flatly, turning to Zhang Nu. âWeâre struggling enough as it is. Now you want to bring along another burden?â
Silence fell. Ling Xiâs eyes instantly welled with tears. She knew she wasnât strong, but to hear it so bluntlyâŠ
Liu Hai, noticing her reaction, quickly stepped in.
âLing Xi, donât take it the wrong way,â he said. âLin Xiao isnât looking down on you.â
âHeâs worried. None of us are strong enough right now, and if we run into danger, we might not be able to protect you.â
âIn fact, he thinks of himself as a burden, too.â
Ling Xi clenched her fists, forcing back her tears. She wanted to believe Liu Hai. And deep down, she did believe him. Zhang Nu and the others werenât bad people. If she doesnât go with them now, she will never meet people like them again.
ââŠI get it,â she murmured. âI wonât hold it against him.â
âBut I wonât stay weak. Iâll work to get stronger. One day, Iâll be strong enough to protect you guys.â
Zhang Nu, Liu Hai, and even Lin Xiao couldnât help but smile.
âJust focus on protecting yourself for now,â Zhang Nu said. âWeâll handle the rest.â
âAlright,â he added, stretching his arms. âLetâs get some rest. Tomorrow⊠we hunt.â
