Even though Liu Hai didnât really understand what was going on, or how it would endâhe still trusted Zhang Nu and Lin Xiao without hesitation.
âSo what do we do next? You donât even have a suspect yet,â Liu Hai asked. âAre we just going to keep staying here forever? How long do you think weâll be stuck?â
Hearing Liu Haiâs complaints, Zhang Nu and Lin Xiao both shook their heads. They didnât know how long theyâd have to stay either. At the very least, they wouldnât leave until they found out who, or whereâthe hidden YaoGuai was, or whether it was even an evil one to begin with.
âWe might have to stay a while longer,â Zhang Nu said. âIf the YaoGuai turns out to be harmless, then weâll leave right away. But if itâs dangerous⊠Weâll probably be tied up here a bit longer.â
Liu Hai nodded in agreement, but he was still restless. âThen we need to find it as soon as possible. If we drag this out any longer, something else might go wrong.â
His concern wasnât unreasonable, but without any clues, being worried wouldnât help.
âIn that case,â Zhang Nu said. âWhy donât we just tell Patron Fu directly? Tell him thereâs a YaoGuai in town and see how he reacts.â
But Zhao Yang quickly frowned. âWe canât do that. What if the YaoGuai really is here in the Fu household? If we say it outright, it might escape. And if Patron Fu finds out, heâll be scared half to death. Fear makes it even easier for YaoGuais to possess people. If that happens, weâll have an even bigger mess.â
Lin Xiao listened to Zhao Yangâs point and agreed he made sense, but didnât think it was enough to stop them.
âI think Zhang Nuâs right. We should tell Patron Fu directly. And we donât need to worry about him getting possessed. Weâll just give him a protective talisman to keep him safe.â
Zhao Yang thought it over. Lin Xiaoâs idea did sound reasonable. If they could protect Patron Fu, then telling him was fine.
âAlright, letâs go with Lin Xiaoâs plan then,â Zhao Yang said. âHe wouldnât steer us wrong.â
Once theyâd settled on this idea, everyone nodded. But right then, Lin Xiao hit them with another pointed question.
âDo any of you have a protective talisman to give him?â
Everyone turned to stare at Lin Xiao in complete silence, like theyâd all been struck dumb at the same time.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Liu Hai asked. âDonât tell me you donât have one?â
Lin Xiao nodded calmly. âWhere would I get something like that? Iâve spent my whole life in a tiny village. Where would I find a protective charm? Iâm just here to give you ideasâyouâre on your own for the rest.â
Zhang Nu pressed a hand to his forehead. Heâd actually been naĂŻve enough to assume Lin Xiao had it covered. The idea was solid, but if they couldnât back it up, then it was just a wish.
âIn that case, everyone should check their bags,â Zhang Nu sighed. âIf Lin Xiao doesnât have one, maybe we can scrape something together ourselves. Worst case, we can see if anyone knows how to draw a simple protection talisman for Patron Fu.â
Faced with that, the whole group could only nod helplessly. None of them had any better options. After all, theyâd barely left home before this. Most of them had never even stepped outside their villageâwhere would they have picked up something as rare as a protective charm?
