Chapter 539: Struck Diamond [GT chapter]
When Izan stepped into the apartment, the smell hit him first.
Warm, sharp, buttery.
He shut the door behind him and dropped his duffel bag by the wall, kicking off his slides before padding toward the kitchen.
Olivia stood barefoot at the stove, hair tied back, one hand flicking a wooden spoon through a pot of something creamy and steaming.
âYouâre home early,â she said, not turning around.
âArteta ended the session a little short. Tactical drills got cut. I think he wanted to reset the vibe.â
âMmm,â she murmured. âIâm guessing âthe vibeâ is code for âyou trying to take on five players again?'â
Izan snorted, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.
âHe talked to me. Not in a bad way. Just⊠honest. Said I was playing against ghosts last game.â
Olivia finally turned to him, her expression soft but expectant.
âWas he wrong?â
He didnât answer right away.
He just shrugged, leaning on the counter.
âI donât know. I was just a bit out of it.â
She handed him a spoonful of the sauce. âTaste.â
He blew on it, then tried it.
Tangy, buttery, and a little bit of chili at the end.
âYouâve outdone yourself.â
âI always do.â
He grinned as she smirked.
They ate at the islandâpasta al limĂłn with roasted garlic and shaved parmesan.
Simple, yet perfect.
The two talked, mostly Olivia while Izan just kept silent, nodding and speaking up when he wanted to give small input.
After their dinner, the apartment was quiet again, save for the low flicker of TV light and the distant hum of the dishwasher.
Olivia was curled up at the edge of the couch, half-wrapped in a blanket, remote on her stomach, eyes fluttering shut between scenes.
Izan was scrolling through his phone, thumb dragging lazily.
Notifications were stackingâmatch clips, quote tweets, side-by-side edits of his trivela goal next to some ridiculous Quaresma compilation.
He didnât read too much into it.
He rarely did anymore.
His muscles were still sore from the afternoon session, but it was a good kind of sore.
The kind that told you youâd put in the work without breaking something.
Then the phone lit up.
The same Unknown number from the evening before.
He stared at it for a second.
Second ring.
Third.
âYeah?â he said, sitting upright and answering.
âIzan,â came the voiceâclean, smooth, almost too polite.
âGlad you picked up. This is Laurent Virelli.â
He blinked once.
The name registered.
âRight. From yesterday.â
âApologies for calling so late,â Laurent said, not missing a beat.
âI imagine youâve had a long day. This wonât take much of your time.â
Olivia turned slightly, lifting her head from the blanket.
âWhoâs that?â
Izan covered the mic and mouthed, âThat guy.â
She raised her brows and nodded, sitting up a little straighter.
âIâll be direct,â Laurent said, voice cutting through with the efficiency of a surgeon.
âYouâre not just a player anymore, Izan. Youâre a brand and a player on a path to becoming an Icon. Think CR7 but bigger and better. You donât need people who manage your scheduleâyou need people who move you into rooms before your name even gets mentioned.â
Izan didnât reply.
âI understand loyalty,â Laurent continued, tone still composed.
âMirandaâs done well. Really. But I represent people who used to be where you areâand now they control the game. Youâre sixteen but now, you have more reach than some legends. But reach isnât direction. Thatâs where I come in.â
Izan leaned back, propping one ankle over his knee.
His face unreadable.
Olivia watched him from the side, expression curious but cautious.
âIâll keep this simple,â Laurent added.
âYou bring me on, I make things easier. Bigger. Cleaner. Sponsorships that donât just boost your walletâbut build a legacy,â he said, a bit softer.
âAnd before you askâyes, I take a cut. Itâs smaller than what Mirandaâs likely taking now. I donât bleed clients, I grow them.â
At that, Izan smiled.
And then he laughed.
A sudden, sharp, involuntary laugh escaped his chest like a punchline.
Olivia, startled, yelped and smacked his arm.
âAre you okay?â
âSorry,â Izan muttered, still grinning.
He brought the phone back to his ear.
âThatâs it?â
Laurentâs voice wavered slightly. âExcuse me?â
âI mean, is that it?â Izan said.
âBecause Miranda told me someone like you would call. Said youâd come with fireworks and smoke and mirrors. And you bring⊠lower commission?â
A long silence followed.
Izan kept going.
âI expected something. I donât knowâbig. Maybe a pitch about changing the sport. Revolutionizing my image. But this? This is the most boring attempt at poaching Iâve ever seen.â
Olivia blinked and covered her mouth, stifling a laugh.
âIzan, Iâm offering you real elevation,â Laurent said, this time his voice slightly sharper.
âYouâre at a crossroads, and Iâm showing you the fast lane.â
âYou donât know where Iâm headed, plus I like to take things slow. For a 16-year-old like myself, things are moving too fast already.â Izan replied.
âAnd Mirandaâs commission? Way lower than what you just pitched. So, like, donât flatter yourself thinking this was a bargain.â
âYouâre young,â Laurent said.
âBut not stupid. So Iâll give it to you straightâMiranda is holding you back. The deals sheâs sitting on? The brands sheâs been slow-walking? You think Aston Martinâs gonna wait forever?â
Izanâs eyes narrowed slightly.
âWhat did you say?â
âThey approached me,â Laurent said.
âThe campaignâs ready. The boardâs aligned. But they wonât close unless Iâm your point of contact. You want that deal? Iâm the guy who delivers it.â
Izan exhaled slowly.
He didnât speak right away.
He didnât need to.
Olivia leaned closer. âWhat is it?â
He muted the call for a second.
âItâs some deal involving Aston Martin,â he said quietly.
âI guess that was the one Miranda said she was saving for my birthday.â
Oliviaâs mouth dropped open slightly.
âWait, that guy just exposed her surprise?â
âYeah.â
He unmuted.
âYou done now?â he said into the phone.
âIzan, Iâm being transparent,â Laurent said.
âIâm not your enemy. But I am the guy who knows how this game is played. You can either get there the hard wayâor let me drive.â
Izan smiled again, but this one had a colder edge to it.
âI think Iâll walk,â he said.
âThanks for the call.â
And with that, he ended the call.
He tossed the phone onto the couch cushion beside him and leaned back, running a hand over his face.
Olivia let out a breath.
âThat was messy.â
âThat was pathetic,â Izan said.
âAre you okay?â
He looked over at her.
âYeah,â he said.
âHeâs just one of those people who thinks if he says it with a good enough accent, youâll stop thinking.â
Olivia laughed, leaned in, and rested her head on his shoulder.
âYou know,â she said after a beat, âyou scare people like that.â
âI hope so.â
âŠâŠ
Miranda on her side, had just ended the call with a soft tap, setting her phone down as she walked to the kitchen island with a little smirk tugging at the corner of her lips before taking out a bottle of water.
She exhaled through her nose and leaned back in her chair, arms folding as he gulped down the water.
âWe might have lost gold,â she murmured to herself, still smiling, âbut we struck diamond.â
It had been a productive hour.
Bellaniâsmooth, efficient, and maybe a little too fond of cryptic phrasingâhad just confirmed the next step in a major campaign.
Bigger than Aston Martin. Bolder.
And Izan wouldnât just be in itâheâd be the face.
Miranda reached for her glass of water when her phone buzzed again.
Izan.
She answered immediately.
âWell, well,â she said, her tone playfully suspicious.
âCalling me? Should I be worried?â
Izanâs voice came through, low and amused.
âI figured youâd want to knowâyour, best friend Virelli just called.â
Miranda rolled her eyes so hard she nearly tipped backward.
âHe really did it, huh?â
âYup,â Izan said.
âSaid you were âcapableâ but that he worked in rooms you hadnât yet stepped into. Then tried to sell me on a âlower percentage.'â
Miranda laughed out loud.
âOh, heâs still using that line? Youâd think after ratting his plans out to me, heâd come up with a new pitch but he didnât even put in the effort.â
Izan chuckled.
âHe also said Aston Martin would only close the deal with him.â
Her voice softened, but only slightly. âI figured heâd say that. Same thing he said to me too, about cooperation. I was even hoping to surprise you with it this week.â
âI guessed as much,â Izan said.
âHe kind of ruined the party.â
âNot entirely,â Miranda replied.
âItâs still coming. And something better might be coming with it.â
There was a beat of quiet on the line.
Then: âThanks,â she said, voice real now. No wit. No polish.
âFor trusting me.â
Izan replied without hesitation.
âIâm good at football. But Iâm not bad at reading people either.â
Miranda smiled, brushing a strand of hair back from her forehead.
âThen maybe we both chose the right careers,â she said.
