Chapter 2
A crack appeared on Alexanderâs usually stoic face. After a moment, he asked with a teasing tone, âLittle girl, are you telling me this because you want to be responsible?â
Emily urgently signaled her brother with her eyes, suggesting he shouldnât be too particular about this. After all, Elizabeth came from the countryside. She wouldnât know that he was a formidable figure in Metro City who commanded fear and respect. It was only natural for her not to know the rules.
Elizabeth thought seriously for a moment and corrected him, âLegally speaking, Iâm already 18 and not a âlittle girl.ââ
Alexander was speechless.
âAlso, Iâm not yet of legal age to marry. What youâre doing could be considered sexual harassment.â
Alexander saw that Elizabeth was making a stern face and appeared to be quite serious. A trace of speechlessness flickered in his eyes.
Do people from the countryside all speak so bluntly?
To prevent Elizabeth from saying anything that might sound too outrageous, Emily took Elizabethâs luggage and guided her into the car.
âAlright, itâs getting late. Letâs talk in the car.â
Emily first put Elizabethâs luggage in the trunk. Once in the car, she noticed Elizabeth casually examining the interior, and her vanity immediately inflated.
âCool, right? This is the latest smart sports car. It can drive itself and even go underwater. Only five have been made worldwide. Do you know how much it costs?â
Emily held up a finger, âAlmost a hundred million dollars. Youâve never seen so much money in your life, have you?â
Elizabeth silently recalled her account balance and generously nodded.
Seeing Elizabeth playing along, Emilyâs eyes filled with admiration, âIt makes sense that itâs expensive. After all, the smart system was developed by Mr. Lawrence Research. Isnât it awesome?â
Elizabeth paused for a moment, the corner of her mouth slightly curved up, âYeah.â
âYou wouldnât understand anyway.â
The pampered Emily assumed that Elizabeth must be spending her days farming in the countryside after school and probably didnât have time to understand these matters.
âBy the way, I forgot to tell you. Your parents had some things to take care of, so they couldnât come to pick you up.â
Elizabeth didnât even lift her eyelids as she gave a nonchalant acknowledgment.
Emily suddenly became interested, âWhy donât you ask me whatâs going on?â
Elizabeth wasnât interested, but seeing Emily staring at her expectantly, she hesitated before asking, âWhat is it?â
Emily looked at her mockingly, âYour half-sister, apparently. I heard she was hospitalized with a fever yesterday and was clinging to your mom, refusing to let her leave. My mom heard about it and asked me to pick you up. Oh, by the way, my mom and your mom were elementary school classmates.â
The kind of classmates who wouldnât contact each other for a year; Elizabeth wondered why they were suddenly so eager to help this time.
Elizabeth Lawrence replied indifferently, âI see.â
âArenât you angry?â
Emily found Elizabethâs reaction abnormal. Wouldnât most people feel disappointed if their biological parents didnât pick them up but instead took care of a non-biological child?
âDo I need to be angry?â Elizabeth was puzzled.
Emily Williams was silent.
She felt something was off yet also right.
Elizabeth really wasnât angry. Although she was biologically related to the Wilson family, they had lost contact after she was kidnapped at the age of three.
Alexander glanced at Elizabeth through the rearview mirror.
Her porcelain-like face was half-shaded, and her eyes were void of any emotion.
She truly wasnât angry.
Emily thought that this was Elizabethâs first time in the city and she must be curious about the outside world, so she started to describe the scenery.
âSee that skyscraper? Itâs the new headquarters of Fortune Law Group which was just completed this year. Impressive, isnât it? The only company that can compete with Fortune Law Group in Austria is Williams Enterprises.â
Elizabethâs dark eyes looked at the towering skyscraper and she made little reaction without a trace of envy.
Just then, Elizabethâs phone vibrated.
Her slender fingers tapped to check the message.
âIâve heard that youâre back in Metro City. When are you coming to the group?â
Elizabeth lowered her eyes and tapped on her phone, âIâm already here.â
âWhere are you? Why didnât you tell me earlier? I could have arranged a welcome ceremony for you.â
Elizabeth, âDriving by.â
There was a pause before the other side replied some periods meaning nothing.
Elizabeth typed earnestly, âThe newly built building is so ugly. It looks like a large vest.â
âYou call the building that cost ten billion dollars a âlarge vestâ? I have something on my mind, but Iâm not sure if I should say it!â
Elizabeth replied indifferently, âHold it in.â
After a while, the person sent over a sad emoji.
Emily Williams talked for quite some time and, seeing no response from Elizabeth, thought she might not be used to the big city. She changed the topic, âBy the way, now that youâre back in Metro City, youâve transferred your school registration, right?â
Elizabeth put away her phone and replied lazily, âYeah.â
Emily nodded, âThatâs good. The resources in Metro City are definitely better than the countryside. As long as you study hard, youâre bound to make a name for yourself.â
Elizabeth looked up, her gaze implying something unsaid, but in the end, she remained silent.
When they reached their destination, Emily leaned out, waving her phone, âLetâs exchange contact info. After all, weâve shared an unexpected encounter. You can reach out if you need anything.â
Mainly because her parents had repeatedly mentioned that Elizabeth Lawrence was to be pitied and that she should take care of her.
A slight brightness flashed in Elizabethâs eyes.
The first step in making friends: exchanging contact information.
Alexanderâs distinct knuckles tapped on the steering wheel. His wandering eyes paused upon seeing Elizabethâs phone.
This was a mobile phone from Fortune Law Groupâs subsidiary, jointly developed with the country, selling at a high price, equipped with the most advanced chip. It was hugely sought after upon its release.
Even if the Wilson family was wealthy, they probably wouldnât buy such an expensive phone for her.
A playful glint crossed Alexander Williamsâ eyes, he asked casually, âLittle girl, did the Wilson family buy you that phone?â
Elizabeth lifted her fair face.
