âB-but, Lord Sub-Priest, sheâsheâs a foreign woman of unknown origin???â
The Marsmo soldier still hadnât recovered, eyes blank.
âWhatâs wrong with that? So what if I take what I fancy, huh??? Itâs not likeââ
He broke off, then jabbed a finger at that Marsmo soldier.
âAnd âunknown originâ? Who said sheâs of unknown origin? Is that what you think???â
âAhâno, no, noânothing of the sort! Since sheâs your fiancĂ©e, then this is all a misunderstanding.â The squad leader forced a tight smile.
After all, he had truly never seen any Sub-Priest actually take a foreign woman as wife. It was something rare to the point of unheard-of. In Marsmo, no Marsmo would do something so beneath their status.
âIn that case, we wonât disturb you and your fiancĂ©e. Since youâve done this, you must have your reasons. Youâre a lord of the Sub-PriesthoodâSub-Priests do as they please. For this to pass smoothly and not bring trouble on us is already as good as it gets!â
So the squad leader hurried to have his men stand down and get back to their dutiesâresume patrol.
These Marsmo soldiers clearly meant to do just that. A Sub-Priest was not someone grunts could afford to provoke. Who would go looking for bad luck at a time like this??
Move alongâdonât risk your posts over this.
Vinny looked toward the temple under construction in the distance. Marsmo soldiers in golden armor barked at the slaves, ordering them not to slack.
Vinny clicked his tongue inwardly. A civilization like this, a country like thisâits fall was indeed a boon to the world.
âHey! You mangy slaveâwhere do you think youâre going?!â
Seeing a slave tip off his stone slab and turn to run, the Marsmo soldiers roared and sprinted after him.
A slave who couldnât even fill his belly couldnât match soldiers in stamina; he didnât get far before he was pinned and dragged back.
When it came to runaway slaves, Marsmo had plenty of tormentsâenough to make them remember forever what the consequences were.
AlrightâVinny knew these were all people long dead. What surfaced before his eyes were replays of what had happened. He and Isatia now stood within a domain governed by a new Divine Authority born of
Eternity and Continuance, each split off in small part and fused together.
This domain had its own set of rulesârules that could not be violated.
Just like how the word âfiancĂ©eâ had slipped inexplicably out of his mouth, and how the Marsmo soldiers recognized the plaque but not the personâ
âall of it showed the status quo of the deep-buried secret realm could not be easily broken.
Vinny guessed that if he tried to beat these Marsmo soldiers,
he might trigger some sort of loopâand these soldiers would be absolutely unkillable.
âUm, Isatiaâare you... alright?â Vinny walked to Isatiaâs side. Feeling that anything else would be inappropriate, he hesitated a moment before forcing the question out.
â...I-Iâm fine, Vinny.â
With effort she lifted her gaze and looked at him in silence.
âAhâabout what I said just nowâdonât take it to heart. Th-this might sound unbelievable, but that sentence just slipped out. I didnât meanââ
âI know.â Isatia cut in coldly before he could finish.
âAhâah?â
âYou came in for that reason too, didnât you?â Isatia continued, âThe names engraved on those bricks are all recorded by âfamilyâ unit. In other words, so long as a slave still has family, that family memberâs name will appear together with theirs on the same brick.â
âYeah. Thatâs right. Exactly that.â
No wonder people preferred talking to the smart onesâyou didnât need to explain a thing. One glance and theyâd grasp seventy or eighty percent of itâand this was while Isatia was in a weakened state.
âThe reason is, uh... I think you know, right? For certain reasons everyone knows.â
Vinny sneaked a glance at Isatia.
He meant, of course, the betrothal set by the last Saintess and the Tyrel Emperor.
A betrothal that formalârequiring certification by both Church and Empireâif that didnât count as formal, then thereâd be no such thing as a formal betrothal in this world.
And in terms of meaning, a betrothal is also a kind of âcontract.â The people of Marsmo took betrothal with utmost solemnityâritual and contractâiron law under Marsmo code.
âWeâve both been affected by Divine Authority,â Isatia said softly after a momentâs thought.
âYes. I think so too.â Vinny agreed. If she understood, all the better.
âI may have... talked myself too tired.â
âEh??â Vinny blinked. That sounded like an apologyâa thought he truly had trouble picturing from someone as forceful as Isatia.
âAre you mocking me for admitting it on my own?â
Isatia pursed her blue-tinted lips and glanced at him. âOne acknowledges objective facts. Whatâs wrong with saying so?â
âNothing at all.â Vinny shook his head.
âEither wayâyou didnât do it on purpose, and itâs already happened. Saying more is pointless. Letâs focus on solving this.â
Vinny looked around and caught sight of a Marsmo city-state rising in the distance.
Because Marsmo civilization stood in the desert, even the city-states were ocher. Domes were gilded, gleaming under reflected sun.
Mm. Though Marsmo were burrowing moles by habit, they were particular about city-state construction.
While Vinny was surveying the surroundings, he noticed Isatia studying him and couldnât help but be puzzled.
âWhat is it?â
âNothing.â Isatia shook her head and withdrew her gaze.
She had thought that a man like Vinny, blundering into an unknown domain, would surely panicâlose his headâor else act on his own and refuse counsel.
Yet once they were actually inside, the one telling her âitâs fine,â âdonât worry,â was him. First she was surprisedâthen she began to reappraise who Vinny was.
âShould we head into the city first and think of a plan there?â Vinny suggested.
âMm.â Isatia didnât objectâor rather, that had been her intention from the start.
But at this rateâan awkward question came up again.
âDo you still have medicine?â Isatia asked.
âAhâare you out?â Vinny finally recalled the many empty vials by Isatiaâs feet back in the shallow layer. So this time, sheâd already drunk all the stimulant elixirs heâd sold her.
No wonder the bouts had put Isatia down againâsheâd fallen back into a sluggish weakness.
Vinny didnât press about the nature of her condition.
It was far too privateâand not something he needed to pry into.
âYouâre curious, arenât you?â Isatia read his face in a glance and knew what he was thinking.
âA bit. But if itâs inconvenient, I wonât ask.â Vinny looked toward the Marsmo city-state in the distance.
Isatia said nothing.
âCan you stand?â Vinny asked.
Isatia did not answer. Her actions told him plainly: right now, even sitting up was difficult. The slightest attempt to brace herself slipped away.
âAlrightâlooks like you canât.â Vinny shook his head.
âThenâare we still going to the city-state?â
âGo.â Isatiaâs voice was clearly lacking in breath, softâbut the backbone and bearing remained, firm as ever.
âOkay. ButâI canât get you there without touching you at all.â Vinny spread his hands.
âNo problem.â Isatia, too, understood. After a momentâs thought, she enunciated each word.
Now was not the time to mind such small details.
âGot it.â Vinny turned his back to her and crouched, slid his hands under her smooth, delicate thighs to lift, guided her arms around his neck, and, with the motion, shouldered her up.
âMm. Weight-wiseâjust a touch heavier than Aesphyra. Not by muchâabout the same.â
With Vinnyâs current build, carrying a girl of her frame was nothing.
Because there was that awkward betrothal issue between them, Vinny usually kept a careful distance from Isatia to avoid gossipâafraid of any physical contact at all.
Why was he moving so fast now? Because Vinny knew the order of priorities. This was no time to split hairs. They were in a Divine Authority domainâif Divine Authority had a will and wanted them dead, it could take them in minutes.
At a crisis point, when your lifeâs on the line, Vinnyâs wits took the high ground.
âBrooding over this now would be pure stupidity, right? Even Isatia isnât hung up on it. If I, a grown man, get hung upâhow am I supposed to act?â
âMm.â Once pressed close, their warmths and heartbeats were palpable. A girlâs fragrance and softness flowed in an instant across Vinnyâs back and arms.
This should have been Isatiaâs first time being this close to a non-kin male. But Vinny figured she probably felt nothingâshe was a glacier in matters of the heart.
It was also Vinnyâs first time in this sort of contact with such a beautiful girlâespecially her body.
Heâd had closer contact with Aesphyra and with Mirexia; he wasnât as fazed by such things anymore.
Isatia had no reaction at all.
It was her first time slack and helpless in someoneâs armsâand that someone was a male classmate not close to her. It meant her safety was placed in anotherâs hands. It meant she could only rely on him.
By rights, Isatia would never like such a feeling. She traced her outlook to herself: only the strong can control their fate; only the weak have their fate controlled by another.
Mmâbut that was in principle.
For some reason, after entering the deep-buried secret realm, she suddenly felt a faint dependence on the man carrying her.
Even Isatia herself might not have sensed this intangible reliance.
The rules of the Divine Authority domain affected more than just Vinny.
[Virtue +30.]
[Current Virtue: 2714.]
For her, this was also her only chance so far.
It was to solve the problem of her bloodline that she had taken this enormous risk to come hereâonly to collapse, powerless, right by the exit.
Though Isatia wasnât heavy and Vinny could shoulder her easily, the city-state was still too far. By the time he reached it, he was panting.
âAhâahâsure, this is a secret realm made by Divine Authorityâbut who knows how big it is?? Donât tell me itâs as big as Marsmo itselfâ??â Vinny groused.
âAm I very heavy?â Isatia asked, out of nowhere.
A chill ran through Vinny. For some reason, this felt like a death question.
Even with zero dating experience, instinct told him that much.
âAhâno, not heavy, not heavyâjust a bit of a long walk.â
Vinny laughed it off.
âYou could have just said it. Only the inwardly weak deliberately avoid objective facts.â
Isatiaâs tone didnât ripple a hair.
â...Alright. Compared to Aesphyraâyes, a bit heavier.â
Which made perfect sense. Vinny knew why Isatia weighed more than Aesphyra. First, Isatia was taller. Secondâ
That old, oft-visited subject: even just carrying her, he could feel, on his back, the two soft mounds that belonged to a girl.
He hadnât figured why she weighed more than Aesphyra?
Wellâsome parts had far more fat than Aesphyraâs. How could she not be heavier??
âMmâmaybe compared to the people Iâve carried before, yes, heavier.â
Vinny said it straight. Only when he saw no change in [Virtue] did he exhale in relief.
Isatia truly had no emotional fluctuation over it. She wasnât interested in men to begin withâwhy would she care about a manâs opinion?
They reached the city-state. Two Marsmo soldiers blocked their way, glaring at their outlandish clothes and unfamiliar faces.
After Vinny presented his pass, the two soldiersâ attitudes flipped to deference and they let them through at once.
âYouâve carried other girls?â Isatia asked.
âYeah.â Vinny didnât mind. What was said was said.
âIsatia, I donât know what trouble youâre facing nowâbut I figure you came for the two Divine Authorities of Continuance and Eternity, right? To cure your illness?â
Vinny ventured.
âYouâre about thirty percent right.â Isatia didnât hide itâshe said it outright.
âAh?? Thirty percentâdonât you think thatâs a bit too precise???â
âVinny, take me aroundâthrough the Marsmo city.â
Isatiaâs voice was serious.
âAh? Ohâokay.â Isatia wouldnât do anything pointlessâespecially now. Trapped in the deep-buried secret realm, she couldnât just be here to sightsee, right???
âRelax. Since you brought me in, Iâll show you how to get out.â
As Vinny was thinking, Isatia spoke suddenly from his back. Exhaustion edged her words, yet the tone still landed with the abundant confidence that belonged to a princess of the Tyrel Empire.
Vinny fell silent.
If Isatia had calculated she would enter the deep-buried secret realm, then she surely had a way out.
It was justâwould developments truly proceed according to her plan?
