Under the cover of night, Vinny slowly crept closer to the fortress.
These banditsâ vigilance couldnât even be called âbarely thereââit was practically nonexistent. Vinny deliberately chose a section where one watchtower had already collapsed and slipped in. As an extraordinary being in the Magus realm, he easily made it to a broken wall on the edge of an outer fort.
Vinny pressed his back to the shattered masonry and stole a glance inside. A patrol of bandits holding torches was making its rounds, passing not far from him.
What struck him as strange was that this groupâs style of clothing was completely different from the bandits heâd run into earlier. The previous group had all worn fur. These ones wore cloth armor, and there was none of that red paint on their faces. Their hair, though, was absurdly meticulousâeach of them looked like theyâd styled it for a spectacle, wearing it long and tied up high with rope so it stuck straight upward.
What kind of bizarre hairstyle was that?
...Wait. It looked kind of familiar.
Vinnyâs eyes narrowed slightly as he thought. Rightâheâd heard that a bandit gang that haunted some of the Tyrel Empireâs desolate backcountry, a group called the âFinal Burials,â dressed in exactly this kind of strange getup.
Supposedly, at the beginning theyâd only been one insignificant little crew among countless mountain bandits. But later they expanded, and because their methods were so vicious, the trouble they caused grew bigger and bigger, and their influence grew wider and widerâuntil it even reached the Imperial Capital. Once the Tyrel Emperor heard about it, he immediately ordered the local lords to assist the knight order he dispatched to wipe them out, slaughtering the entire bandit group. That was how it ended.
Only later... thanks to that so-called âcelebrity effect,â plenty of banditsâno one knew what their motives were, maybe to swell their numbers, maybe to intimidate villagers more effectively, or maybe just because they thought it sounded impressiveâstarted claiming they were the âFinal Burials.â
Because theyâd been personally crushed by cavalry from the Imperial Capital, the âFinal Burials,â a bandit group that shouldâve been erased, ârevivedâ again. After the real âFinal Burialsâ had been exterminated, any random mountain bandits crawling out of some backwater hole would claim they were remnants of the âFinal Burials,â rebuilding the group to attract recruits and support from others whoâd gone outlaw.
Then what about that fur-wearing group from earlier? Another bandit crew too?
Only in an empire like thisâold money of old moneyâwould even bandit gangs be so particular. Even going out to kill and burn, they still had to give their organization a loud, grand name.
But these âFinal Burialsâ were clearly not the same group as the bandits heâd killed at the foot of the mountain. And if you used even a little common senseâsure, they were all thieves, but bandits werenât some single solid lump. âSame trade, bitter enemiesâ applied in the bandit world too. If you did all the âbusiness,â what were the others supposed to do?
Smashing someoneâs livelihood was the same as killing their parents.
There was no need to say itâbandit groups definitely had disputes, even outright fights. The chance theyâd cooperate was extremely small.
If that was the case... why were these two groups choosing to work together?
Vinny couldnât make sense of it, but he didnât stop moving. He flipped up onto the broken wall, crawled along it to the battlements, and after he saw the torchlight from the patrol up there was far from him, he slipped toward the keepâs entrance. Light leaked through the crack in the door, and faint voices carried outâthere were people inside.
The voices were muted through the wood, but Vinny was an extraordinary being. His five senses were razor-sharp; he could make out what they were saying.
âThe âFur Foxesâ who went down the mountain to patrol today still havenât come back.â
âUseless. Canât accomplish anything, and they drag their feet even on little chores. Iâm telling youâwe never shouldâve pulled them in. We shouldâve worked alone from the start,â a rough male voice said.
âEnough. Youâve got extra cannon fodder and youâre still unhappy? Stop saying things like that. Weâre cooperating for now,â another, thinner voice advised.
Vinny hesitated, then kept listening.
âHah. Looks like there are plenty of vultures eyeing this piece of meat. When we ran into them here, we shouldâve just killed them on the spot. Now lookâonce the rite is over and we go in to grab the treasure, weâll have to carve out a share for them too?!â
âFuture problems can wait. Besidesâwho said weâre giving them anything?â
âThen what? Weâve already been driven out of the core area.â
âThat couldnât be helped. They came first. And that rite really does have some tricks. Itâs gotten us out of the empire soldiersâ encirclements more than once. If it were only me, I mightâve already fallen into their hands. Lookâweâre twisted into a single rope now. Thatâs the momentum you need to do big things.â
âTch. If it werenât for that, Iâd have quit a long damn time ago!â
A rite...?
A flicker of thought passed through Vinnyâs face. He wanted to keep listening, but the two inside stopped talking.
Waiting longer didnât look like it would produce anything useful.
Vinny pushed the door open.
âDamn itâdidnât I tell you? Knock! Are you deaf?! Didnât you hearââ Hearing the door, a bald, burly man sprang up from his stool. He was about to explode, but then he saw a blue-haired young man standing outsideâsomeone who clearly wasnât one of theirs.
âYouâ?!â The bald manâs eyes bulged. He didnât even get the âwho are youâ out before a cold flash wiped his throat. His head tilted, and he collapsed to the floor, eyes wide open, as if he still hadnât processed what had happened.
â?!â âBoss?!â The tall, skinny man saw the bald brute drop into a pool of blood without warning, completely motionless, and went pale with shock.
That bald brute wasnât weakâand he even had the strength of an Intermediate Apprentice-class. He was an extraordinary being with a Spirit Soul. And heâd been instantly killed just because someone opened a door?!
The skinny man stared at the blue-haired youth, his heart turning to ice. He didnât recognize the uniform Vinny wore, but he knew heâd run into something enormous.
âHonored Young Masterâthereâs room to talk!â the tall, skinny scar-faced man hurriedly dropped to his knees to beg, his expression changing like stage masks.
âCut the nonsense. I ask, you answer.â Vinny brought the butt of Frostfang down heavily on the floor.
BANG!
Stone dust exploded up. The impact alone sent chips flying. The skinny man didnât dare make a sound.
âWhy are you squatting here? Whatâs your purpose?â Vinnyâs voice was coldâcold as the gleam on his weaponâs tip.
âTh-That... obviously to find somewhere to make a living, Honored Young Master,â the skinny man forced a smile as he answered. But before he could say another word, the table beside him was sliced clean in half and toppled down beside him.
âY-YOW!â A lock of his hair was shaved off as well. His face went white.
At this point, even if he had no eyes, he could see itâthis blue-haired youth was anything but ordinary. Just from that long spear in his hand, flashing with icy light, you could tell it was a high-grade enchanted weapon heâd never even seen before.
Vinny didnât speak. He simply looked down at him. Those moon-blue eyes said everything.
This was the last chance heâd get. If he kept trying to fool him, Vinny would make him wish he were dead.
At the foot of the mountain, Vinny had already seen what these bandits did. Trash like thisâif you didnât eradicate them with thunderous decisivenessâwould keep harming good people.
Vinny never went soft on filth like this. He never showed mercy.
âW-We... weâre actually gathered here because we wanted to use this place as our base.â
âKeep going.â Vinny spoke each word slowly. The pressure in that tone crushed down on the banditâs ears. âI didnât tell you to stop.â
âA-And then... we actually found out thereâs treasure here, so we set up here to see if we could get a share,â the skinny man said, his eyes darting around nonstop.
âFriend, if youâre hoping those lackeys outside will save you, you might as well hope I grow a conscience.â Vinny saw through him at a glanceâhe was trying to call for help from his companions outside. âOr do you think losing a finger would make you more convincing?â
âNo, no! Young MasterâIâm telling the truth!â The skinny man stared at Frostfang Spear, shimmering with icy blue magic light, and hurriedly spoke. âThink about itâwhy would a group of bandits gather here if it wasnât for something like that?!â
âMm. At least you know what you are.â Vinnyâs gaze stayed fixed. âThen what? Why are you working with other bandit groups? Tell the truth.â
âIf I say it... can you spare my life?â the skinny man tested.
Vinny didnât answer. He simply raised the spear again and slammed it down.
BANG!
Stone chips sprayed up, slicing the skinny manâs cheek and carving a bloody line into his face.
âI-I understand! Itâs like thisâwe found out there were valuables here, so we came. Then we ran into some other bandit groups.â
âFound out?â Vinny frowned. âHow did you find out? Be specific.â
Vinny didnât believe these uneducated bastards had the ability to âdiscoverâ treasure. If they had that kind of skill, would they need to take the risk of becoming bandits in the first place?
âWe... uh... we donât really understand ourselves.â The skinny man looked baffled. âBack then, when we passed through, we didnât know why, but we just felt like there was treasure on this mountain. So we came up. After we got up here, we saw other bandits already squatting here.â
âAnd then?â
âAnd then... you know how it is. People in the same trade donât get along. Especially us. Ahem. So we were thinking weâd grab our weapons and fight them... but in the end, we didnât.â
âWhy didnât you fight?â
âBack then, someone in a black robe came out and stopped the conflict. That guy claimed he was some kind of priestâhis outfit was really strange,â the skinny man said.
âHow was it strange? What did he look like?â
âI didnât see. His whole face was hidden in the robe. Ohâmost noticeable was that there was a symbol on the hood, something like a red eyeball. That red eyeball was surrounded by all kinds of carvingsâlike it was growing out of the top of his head.â
âHe said we were all warriors gathered here by a summons, and that we were family.â
âAnd you just... stopped fighting?â Vinnyâs brow furrowed.
âI donât know! Back then, I just... felt like what he said made a lot of sense. I donât know why. But he really does have some ability. Weâve slipped out of the empire armyâs encirclements more than once because of him,â the skinny man confessed.
âThen what? Did he order you to disguise yourselves as robbers and collect travelersâ organs?â Vinny asked.
âY-You... how did you know?!â the skinny manâs eyes went wide.
âWhat did he have you collect them for?â Vinny didnât answer his question and kept pressing.
âThat... we donât know.â The skinny man shook his head. âWhen it was our turn, we went down the mountain to gather the âmaterialsâ and hand them over. Theyâre stationed in the central fort. As for what they do inside with those âmaterialsâ... we donât know anything.â
âHow many bandit groups have gathered here?â
âCounting us, three groups total. Usâthe âFinal Burials.â The âFur Foxes.â And the âInterpreters.ââ
âInterpreters?â The ones wearing fur with red paint on their faces were obviously the âFur Foxes.â But Vinny had never heard of the âInterpreters,â let alone seen them.
âTheyâre one of the bandit groups here. Their origins are unknownâa very mysterious organization. Rumor says most of them are poachers. You see them in all kinds of forests. Before this, Iâd only heard of them,â the skinny man explained. âTheir look is weird too. They dress like savages, most of them have tattoos, and they wear antler crowns made from tamed deer antlers. Most of them are equipped with hunting bows.â
âInterpreters...â These bandits really were something. Doing wicked things all day long, yet they still had to pick a name that sounded cool.
Vinny fell silent for a moment, looking like he was about to speakâ
Then, before the skinny man could even react, Vinny swung the spear and split his skull off-center.
The skinny man didnât even get a sound out before his breathing stopped.
These criminals were steeped in evil. Vinny was never going to let them go. Sparing even one would be an enormous sin.
With the information he wanted in hand, Vinny kicked the door open and looked down at the remaining âFinal Burialsâ patrolâstill circling, still unaware.
An ice chain slipped out from his palm, pulling him down.
âMmâ?!â By the time the patrol bandits reacted, the icy spearhead was only inches from their skulls.
Frostfang Spear swept back and forth through the crowd like an ice flower blooming in wild abandonâpainting with blood.
There were more than twenty of them, yet they didnât even get a scream out. Like chopping melons and slicing vegetables, they were hacked apart, scattered in pieces.
