The city apartment.
"Kelly, I did it! I got accepted!"
Daniel pushed the door open and could not wait to tell Kelly the good news.
Kelly burst into tears of joy, her vision blurring.
She choked out,
"You did it!"
"From the very first moment I met you, I knew that no chains could ever bind your wings."
Daniel smiled and pulled her into his arms.
"Kelly, once I make something of myself, weāll move into a bigger house. Itāll face the sea. Weāll be able to hear the waves singing as they strike the reefs, and see the first flower of spring bloom before the window."
"Mm!"
Kelly nodded heavily. Tears were still flowing, yet the corners of her mouth had already curved into a crescent moon.
"However, I need to go to the company headquarters for a six-month internship. After six months, Iāll return to your side."
"Iāll stay here and wait for your return."
Kelly paused, then asked worriedly,
"But... do you still have enough money?"
Daniel gave a bitter smile, his eyes filled with helplessness and self-reproach.
"Donāt worry. Take all the money at home with you. Iāll take good care of myself."
Kelly spoke gently, without the slightest hesitation in her voice.
The day after Daniel left, Kelly quit her original job.
Because that job took up too much of her time.
She wanted to take on more part-time jobs and turn every minute into shining bills.
During the day, she worked as a server at a church, carrying plates, pouring water, and greeting people with a smile.
As dusk approached, she shuttled through streets and alleys, delivering steaming meal boxes to strangersā doors.
Late at night, she worked as a waitress in a tavern, cleaning cups and plates amid the noise of voices and the smell of alcohol.
Three part-time jobs in a single day.
She was like a tireless spinning top, turning beneath the whip of fate.
"With all three jobs together, I can probably make eight or nine thousand a month. I should be able to save over eight thousand."
Kelly calculated silently in her heart, remembering every account clearly.
"Daniel is an employee of a big company now. I canāt let his coworkers look down on him. I need to buy him a few decent sets of clothes."
"He probably wonāt eat well out there either. And there are those social gatherings with colleagues... How can a man manage outside if his pockets are empty?"
"If Iām frugal, a few hundred should be enough for me. Iāll send him the rest."
...
Half a year passed quietly, leaving no trace behind.
Because of his outstanding performance, Daniel received a company award.
Yvette was also among those awarded!
Because they had spent half a year together on a business trip at headquarters, the two of them had already become as familiar as old friends.
Nurentin Airport.
"Daniel, a car will be coming to pick me up in a moment. Shall I give you a ride?"
A trace of expectation that was difficult to detect hid in Yvetteās gaze.
"Thank you for your kindness, but my wife will be coming to pick me up. Thereās no need to trouble yourself."
Daniel politely declined, his tone courteous yet distant.
"Oh? The airport is so far from the city, yet your wife is personally driving here to pick you up?"
Yvetteās eyes flickered, and she was secretly surprised.
As the two spoke, a black luxury sedan slowly stopped by the roadside, its body reflecting a cold gleam beneath the sunlight.
A driver wearing white gloves respectfully opened the door.
"Miss, please get in."
Yvette was unwilling to give up and asked for the third time,
"Are you sure you donāt need a ride?"
Daniel was just about to speak when he suddenly saw a battered little electric scooter hurriedly approaching from the distance.
The figure on the scooter trembled slightly in the cold wind, like a stubborn withered leaf refusing to fall.
"No need. My wife has already arrived."
Warmth suddenly entered his voice.
Yvette followed his gaze and saw that simple little scooter. An indescribable shock rose in her heart.
She nodded, then turned and got into the black luxury car.
The airport was so far from the city. Would she have to ride for two hours...
This Mrs. Daniel was truly trying too hard!
Daniel and Kelly embraced tightly, as though they had been separated for an entire century, and yet as though they had never parted at all.
"Get on."
Daniel climbed onto the little electric scooter and motioned for Kelly to sit behind him.
"Mm!"
Kelly wrapped both arms around his waist, pressing her cheek against his broad back.
The cold wind cut across their faces, icy and biting.
But in both their chests, a fire was burning, warm and bright.
Within that cold wind, there seemed to be a honey-like sweetness that seeped into the heart.
...
Nurentin Company.
Danielās superior called him into the office. As soon as they met, he smiled and said,
"Congratulations, Daniel."
Daniel asked blankly,
"Congratulations for what? I donāt remember buying a lottery ticket."
"Hahaha... The bossās daughter has taken a liking to you."
There was a hint of ambiguity and amusement in his superiorās eyes.
"Youāre a lucky boy. As long as you agree to divorce your wife and marry Miss Yvette, your position will rise several levels in a row. Youāll directly sit in the department managerās chair, and youāll even step across the threshold of the board of directors."
"A single step to the heavens is right before your eyes!"
His superior paused, his gaze sharpening.
"However... if you refuse..."
...
"Good day, miss. This is the meal you ordered."
Kelly handed the meal box in her hand to the elegant, noble-looking woman before her.
Yvette did not reach out to take it. She merely glanced at it indifferently, a faint smile rising at the corner of her lips.
"This meal was ordered for you."
"What?"
Kelly froze.
"Iām Danielās colleague, and also the daughter of the owner of the company he works for."
Yvetteās lips curved upward.
"Tell me, do you think Daniel would be happier spending his life with someone like you, or with me?"
"If you are a smart person, then let him go. That would also be letting yourself go."
Kelly was speechless for a moment.
Her gaze fell on the oil-stained work uniform she was wearing.
She looked at the woman before herāyoung, noble, born into a prestigious family.
And herself?
She was wearing coarse work clothes, and in a little while, she still had to rush to the tavern to carry plates.
Her grandmother had long since passed away as well...
Indeed, she did not have any impressive cards to put on the table.
"Why arenāt you saying anything?"
Yvetteās laughter was crisp yet cold.
"You only need to agree to dissolve your marriage with Daniel, and I will give you thirty million!"
"That is thirty million. You would never need to run around for a living again!"
"I believe you are a smart person. Smart people know what they should do."
...
The city apartment.
"Kelly, Iām back."
Daniel pushed open the door and walked into the familiar room.
"Go wash your hands first. Dinner is ready."
Kelly answered with a smile, her voice as gentle as ever.
After dinner,
"Kelly, I resigned from that job."
Daniel suddenly spoke, his tone calm.
Kellyās eyes instantly grew wet, tears circling in them.
"Itās okay. I believe in you. I have believed in you from beginning to end."
"You are the best person in this world. You always have been."
Daniel gently wiped away the tears sliding down her cheeks and sighed softly.
"Stop crying. Iāll take you to see fireworks."
"Itās not a festival. Where would there be fireworks?"
"Beautiful things never need to wait, just as stars will shine when it is time for them to shine!"
...
Daniel found another job.
Five years later, he became an executive of a chamber of commerce and bought a spacious manor.
Kelly gave birth to a pair of twins for him, and the children were already several years old.
They walked hand in hand through decades of life, until both of them eventually lived in the same clinic.
"By the way... did Yvette ever say something to you?"
Daniel asked casually.
"Thatās right!"
Kelly smiled, her wrinkled eyes filled with tenderness.
"She even said she would give me thirty million if I divorced you."
"Then why didnāt you agree? Back then, you were working yourself half to death, and your monthly salary was still less than ten thousand, wasnāt it?"
"Then why did you resign from that job?"
Kelly rolled her eyes and asked him back.
The two looked at each other, then suddenly burst into laughter.
"Idiot."
Daniel scolded her with a smile, though his voice was full of affection.
"Youāre not much better."
Kelly smiled too, smiling just like the girl who had handed over a few copper coins at the carriage station all those years ago.
