"Alright... thatâs enough," Sofiaâs voice slipped in with controlled calm, but there was a firmness beneath it that hadnât been there before, and as she stepped forward, she didnât hesitate this time, gently but decisively placing her hands between them and separating Maria from Razeal, her movement smooth yet deliberate, as if she had already decided that this boundary needed to be drawn, and the moment she did, she felt it how much resistance there was, how tightly Maria had been holding on, how much force it actually took to pull her back and that alone sent a quiet alarm through her mind, That wasnât normal... her eyes narrowed just slightly, not outwardly aggressive but observant now, That wasnât just affection... that was... something else...?
Razeal, however, didnât immediately register that layer, his brows knitting faintly as he watched Sofia separate them, confusion flickering across his expression, "What happened?" he asked, his tone casual but genuinely questioning, as if he didnât see the necessity of what she had just done.
Maria, on the other hand, reacted instantly though not with resistance this time, but with a soft click of her tongue, her head tilting slightly as she cast a sideways glance toward Sofia, her expression carrying a faint, almost amused edge, and then, as if nothing had happened, she turned back toward Razeal with a small, composed smile, her tone light, almost playful..
"Maybe your wife is a little jealous of me... being close to you," she said, her eyes lingering on him just a fraction longer than necessary, "But donât worry... I know itâs not you."
The words were soft but sharp underneath.
And then
She turned toward Sofia.
"Sorry... if I made you feel insecure," Maria added, her expression shifting into something that resembled guilt, though the subtle curve at the corner of her lips made it difficult to tell how genuine it actually was.
Sofiaâs reaction was immediate.
"You.." her eyes widened slightly, more in disbelief than anger at first, before narrowing quickly, her gaze sharpening as she looked directly at Maria, her expression turning dangerous in a way that wasnât loud but precise, controlled, Insecure? the word echoed in her mind, irritation flaring, Sheâs the one crossing lines... and now sheâs framing it like that?
"Sofia?" Razealâs voice cut in again, noticing the shift in tension now, his gaze moving between them, "You alright?" he asked, his tone still neutral, though there was a hint of curiosity now and little understanding too.. as ofcourse he would feel it too.. Its natural and very normal thing to feel.. So he looked at her with that gaze.
Sofia held Mariaâs gaze for a second longer.
Then exhaled softly.
"Nothing... itâs fine," she said, her voice flattening intentionally, pulling herself back from reacting further, her head shaking slightly as if dismissing the entire thing, "I just thought she was..." she paused, cutting herself off mid-thought, "...never mind. Itâs not important."
But inside
It wasnât nothing.
Somethingâs off with her... Sofia thought quietly, her eyes flickering briefly back to Maria, That definitely wasnât normal as the fucking way she held him... and the way she looked.. She mightve licked his neck.. as from the look she was giving her.
But again Sofia stopped herself. If I say something now itâll just sound like jealousy... exactly what she implied... her jaw tightened slightly, And I donât even have proof... just a feeling..
So she let it go.
For now that is.. But shell keep eye on her.
Razeal, seeing her step back from it, didnât press further, simply nodding faintly, "Hmm... alright then," he said, shrugging lightly, clearly not interested in digging deeper into what he considered unnecessary tension, his focus already moving past it.
But Maria
Saw everything.
And as Sofia pulled back, choosing silence
A faint, almost imperceptible sly smile appeared on Mariaâs lips.
And Sofia caught it Immediately.
Her eyes narrowed again, sharper this time, suspicion replacing irritation, That smile... her gaze lingered, She knows what sheâs doing
And when Maria noticed that Sofia had caught it
Her smile widened.
Just slightly enough to confirm it.
Sofiaâs lips parted as if to speak, ready this time to call it out, to say something..
But before she could
Maria moved first.
"So," she said smoothly, turning her attention back to Razeal as if the tension had never existed, her tone shifting back to composed curiosity, "Whatâs the plan?" her eyes fixed on him, "Where do we start... and when?"
The shift was so clean
That it forced Sofia to swallow her words.
Literally.
Her focus redirected.. Unwillingly so.
Sheâs avoiding it... Sofia realized, her gaze tightening, No... sheâs trying to controll the flow...
But even so
She didnât interrupt again as her attention moved to Razeal as well.
And Razeal
Answered without hesitation.
"Tomorrow." And as he said it, he snapped his fingers lightly, pointing toward Maria as if locking the decision in place, "We start tomorrow," he repeated, his tone carrying no room for delay.
Sofia blinked.
"...Tomorrow?" she echoed, her surprise immediate this time, "Isnt that too fast?"
Maria, in contrast
Didnât react with hesitation.
She simply nodded once.
As if just trying to show fully Supportive rather being questioning.. as how sofia was doing
As if she had already aligned herself with whatever speed he chose.
"Kingdom of Denvaar," Razeal continued, his voice steady as he named it, his gaze shifting slightly as if already thinking ahead.
Maria tilted her head slightly at that, her curiosity surfacing again, though this time it was more focused, more analytical, "Denvaar?" she repeated, her brows knitting faintly, "Why there specifically?" her eyes searched his, "Is there a reason youâre starting from that kingdom?"
"Because itâs already in a war," Razeal answered simply, as if stating something obvious, his tone steady and unbothered by the weight of what he was revealing, "And Iâm going to step in as a protector... save it... earn the trust of its people," he continued, his gaze shifting briefly between both of them, "Win their favor through that," a faint smile forming on his lips as he added almost casually, "And while doing that... weâll also take control of it," he shrugged lightly, "but by their permission." His voice carried a strange calm certainty, as if the contradiction in those ideas didnât exist to him at all.
"Wait... what?" she said, her voice sharp with disbelief, taking a small step forward, "Itâs in war? Since when?" her mind immediately began running through everything she knew, everything she had studied, everything she had been taught about the political and military structure of the region as obiously she had gone through precie training as a Heir of Pillar family.
"I thought there was no war anywhere near here," she continued, her tone growing more analytical, more grounded in logic as she tried to dismantle the inconsistency, "As far as I know... within at least three thousand kilometers around the Empire of Aetherion? This empire.. there hasnât been a single major conflict in decades.. Like forever ever.." she emphasized, gesturing slightly as she spoke, her confidence stemming from knowledge rather than assumption, "And the Kingdom of Denvaar isnât even that far... itâs just three or four kingdoms away," her eyes narrowed slightly, "Which means it falls under imperial jurisdiction... directly or indirectly under the Empressâs authority," she concluded, her voice tightening, "And Iâm absolutely sure she would never allow a war to exist within her sphere of influence," she said firmly, because that wasnât speculation that was fact, "So what youâre saying... it doesnât make sense,"
Razeal though didnât reacted much.
"But the war is happening," he said again, simply.
No elaboration, no justification Just certainty.
Maria stared at him.. And despite everything in her knowledge telling her otherwise
She believed him.
Not because it made sense.. But because he said it anyways.. Like yeah who cares about coomon semse and knowledge.
"...Alright," she exhaled faintly, forcing her thoughts to adjust, even if reluctantly, "Letâs assume thatâs true," she said, her tone shifting into something more focused, more strategic, "Then who are they fighting?" she asked quickly, her mind already moving forward, "If weâre stepping into this... we need to understand the sides, the dynamics, the structure of the conflict," her lips curved slightly into a faint, confident smilezz
"And you are lucky ive studied most of the political and military relations across half this continent," she added, a hint of pride slipping into her tone, "I can help you plan this properly." Her eyes flickered toward him briefly, something warmer passing through them, Heâll need me now... Iâll be useful... Iâll be the one standing beside him
"Itâs against the Empire of Aetherion." Razeal said without hesitate.
The words dropped and everything for Maria just seems to have Stopped.
Maria didnât react immediately because her mind just didnât accept it.
Not at first and not at all..
"...What?" she whispered faintly, her voice losing all structure for a second, her expression blank as if the information simply refused to settle into place, and then she shook her head slowly, once, then again, as if trying to physically reject the idea.
"This... empire?" she repeated, her tone rising, confusion turning into disbelief, "A small kingdom like Denvaar... barely holding any supreme-level powerhouses... is at war with this empire? Like literally going against the strongest empire in the world?" Her eyes widened slightly, her voice gaining sharpness now.
"Do you even understand what youâre saying?" she asked, stepping slightly closer, "An empire where supremes are practically sitting under every random tree.. Like literally everywhere in corners no one can expect," her hand lifted slightly as she gestured in frustration, "The empire where Seven of the top ten strongest supremes in the entire world ranking belong to?" her breath quickened slightly..
"Are you even hearing what youâre saying? Because from everything I know... this doesnât just sound unlikely.. it sounds impossible."
She paused briefly, but the more she thought about it, the more absurd it became, her expression tightening with a mix of confusion and frustration. "Not to mention... they wouldnât even need to mobilize the empire itself," she went on, her tone turning sharper, more insistent. "They wouldnât need a high-ranking family... No.. Scratch that.. not even that." She let out a dry, humorless breath. "Send a random shop or a restaurant in the middle of the imperial capital. Iâm sure even they would have enough connections to wipe that kingdom off the map in less than a day." Her eyes lifted back to him then, searching, demanding answers that would somehow reconcile this madness.
But then again she stopped herself mid-thought, her lips pressing together as a new realization struck her, her gaze shifting slightly as she reconsidered everything. "No... leave that aside," she muttered, almost to herself, before looking back at him with renewed intensity. "Even if somehow there is a war going on, and that kingdom hasnât already been erased because of some ridiculous oversight or mistake..." Her voice grew firmer, more serious, her eyes locking onto his. "Why would you ever think itâs a good idea to take that kingdomâs side?"
Her disbelief deepened, turning into something heavier something closer to genuine concern mixed with exasperation. "Because that doesnât just mean supporting them," she continued, each word deliberate, pressing. "That means youâre willingly choosing to stand against that empire." She gestured faintly, as if the sheer scale of it couldnât even be contained in words. "And do you understand what that implies?"
she added quietly, because from her perspective, it was the equivalent of challenging the final enemy before even beginning the journey
She stared at him, almost at a loss. "Instead of slowly getting stronger, facing bigger opponents as you grow... youâre going straight for the very final An very ultimate impossible opponent from the very beginning." Her voice dropped slightly, incredulous. "Youâre basically choosing to fight the final boss at the start of the story."
And yet
"Donât worry," Razeal said, his voice calm, almost casual, as if he were talking about something trivial rather than a war that could decide the fate of nations. "Itâs not as serious as you think it is. Iâll win this war in less than ten days."
For a moment, there was silence.
She seriously doesnât know where his confidence was coming from
"Ohhh, really?" Maria replied, drawing the words out slowly, her tone dripping with disbelief. Her expression made it painfully clear she didnât believe a single word of it. It wasnât that she wasnât on his side she would follow him into whatever madness he chose but that didnât mean she would blindly accept something so utterly absurd. Her eyes studied him, searching for even the slightest hint that he was joking, exaggerating, anything that would make this sound less insane. But there was none.
She shook her head faintly, almost helplessly, her gaze wavering as if trying to process him rather than his words.
And then something shifted.
It was subtle, barely noticeable at first. A flicker in his expression. A certain calmness. A confidence that wasnât loud or boastful but quiet, absolute.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Wait...
Her thoughts stilled, a new possibility forming one so absurd it made everything else seem almost reasonable in comparison. Her gaze sharpened as she looked at him again, this time more carefully, as if trying to read what lay beneath the surface.
"...Does the Empress know about the ongoing war?" she asked slowly, her tone changing, carrying a hint of something deeper suspicion, realization, perhaps even unease.
There was a brief pause.
Amd.. Just Razeal smiled.
"No."
"Yeah... I figured," Maria exhaled slowly, her earlier confusion settling into something sharper, more structured, as her mind aligned the pieces one by one, her gaze lifting back toward Razeal with a new kind of clarity, "Thereâs no way something like this could exist openly... not under her empire," she continued, her tone now calm but analytical.
"If the Empire of Aetherion actually knew one of its territories was in active war, it wouldâve been crushed instantly... erased before it could even escalate." She paused slightly, her eyes narrowing as she refined the thought further, "So the only logical explanation..." her voice lowered just a fraction, "...is that no one important knows about it." Her gaze sharpened, locking onto him..
"Let me guess... the Duke families donât know either?" she added, her brows lifting faintly as she continued piecing it together, "And this whole thing probably started from maybe during all this chaos with portals and rifts opening everywhere and all being busy at that? So no one just knows?" she tilted her head slightly, watching him closely now, "Am I right?"
For the first time
Razeal looked genuinely surprised.
Not shocked.
But kinda impressed.
His eyes lingered on her for a moment longer than usual, as if reassessing something, She figured that out... that fast? the thought passed silently through his mind, though his expression didnât fully betray it.
Maria caught it immediately.
"What?" she said, her tone shifting into mild disbelief, almost offended, her lips parting slightly, "Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked, her brows furrowing, "Like I just did something impossible?" she shook her head faintly, exhaling through her nose.
"This isnât hard to figure out," she continued, her tone firm, grounded in logic, "Itâs far more believable that a war is happening unnoticed... than believing some random small kingdom is openly fighting the strongest empire in the world and still standing," her gaze didnât leave his, "Wars donât exist because theyâre declared... they exist because theyâre unseen long enough to grow." She crossed her arms lightly, her posture settling, "As long as the empire doesnât know... the war can exist."
Razeal shrugged slightly.
As if to say
Good. You understand.
He didnât elaborate further or correct her.
But yeah.. He Didnât deny it.
And that was confirmation enough.
"So..." Maria continued after a brief pause, her tone shifting back to focused curiosity, "Who exactly are they fighting?" she asked, her mind already moving ahead into strategy again, "If weâre stepping into this... I need to know the opposing side, the structure, the scale.."
"Youâll know when we get there," Razeal cut in calmly, his voice carrying a quiet finality that made it clear he wasnât interested in explaining further right now, "Donât worry about it for now."
Maria blinked.
"...But I have to worry about it," she replied almost immediately, her tone tightening again, frustration slipping through despite her attempts to stay composed, "You might not think it matters, but it does," she continued, her voice steady but firm, "Even if everything you said is true... even if the empire doesnât know yet... choosing that kingdom is still a terrible starting point," her eyes locked onto his again, serious now, "Youâre stepping into a situation that will inevitably escalate," she added, "Because the moment this war becomes visible... the moment it reaches the Empress..." her voice lowered slightly, "...there wonât be negotiation."
She paused.
Then said it plainly.
"Youâll be forced to accept defeat." Her words werenât emotional.
They were factual.
"She doesnât tolerate the concept of losing," Maria continued, her tone almost detached now, as if stating a universal law, "So your idea of creating an independent kingdom... under her authority?" she shook her head faintly, "Thatâs not something sheâll allows to exist." Her gaze softened just slightly not in doubt, but in concern, "Itâs not about whether youâre strong or not... itâs about the system itself."
For a brief moment
Silence hung between them.
Then
"Sheâll have to."
Razealâs voice cut through it.
Calm and Certain and totally Unshaken.
Maria looked at him.
And he smiled.
Not arrogantly.. But with a quiet, unwavering confidence that didnât try to prove itself Because it didnât feel the need to.
"Iâll make it possible," he added simply.
And that.. Was what made it unsettling.
Maria held his gaze for a few seconds longer, searching, analyzing, trying to find doubt, hesitation, something
But there was none.
And that made her uneasy.
"...Thereâs no need to take this kind of risk," she said again, though this time her voice had softened slightly, less confrontational, more persuasive, "You donât have to start here," she continued, her tone shifting into something more strategic again, "If you really want to build power... then start somewhere else.. another continent.. far from the imperial capital," she gestured slightly as she spoke, "Distance gives you time... safety... And room to grow.. Which
You do need no matter how much you try not to admit.." her eyes met his again, "Itâll take longer, yes... but itâs stable. Controlled. You wonât be walking straight into the center of danger."
For a moment It almost sounded reasonable.
Even Sofiaâs expression reflected that thought.
But Razeal didnât respond with discussion this time he simply looked at her, his expression neutral, his tone direct, "Are you coming with me... or not?" the question cut through everything, clean and simple, leaving no room for further argument. "Because I am going... regardless," and that was it that was the line, and Maria froze for just a second, her thoughts clashing internally, logic against emotion, reason against attachment, because she knew she knew he was walking into something overwhelmingly dangerous, something she was almost certain he couldnât win, and yet...
"I will... I will," she said quickly, her voice firm despite the conflict inside her, shaking her head slightly as if dismissing her own earlier objections, "I was wrong to suggest otherwise," she added, almost forcing the words out, "Iâll go wherever you go," and for just a brief moment, something flickered in her eyes a faint trace of instability, of obsession, of something deeper and darker but it vanished just as quickly as it appeared.
"Good," Razeal nodded, satisfied, "And trust me... Iâll win," he added, his tone carrying that same unshakable confidence, "I donât make plans that fail," he said simply, "I know exactly what Iâm doing,"
And Maria nodded in return, though deep down, she didnât believe it not fully, not logically
âHeâs going to lose... thereâs no way this worksâ the thought lingered in the back of her mind, heavy and undeniable, But it doesnât matter, she told herself, Iâll go with him anyway, because at this point, persuasion was meaningless she had already realized that nothing she said would change his path
So sheâll stay... no matter what, she had decided that her resolve settling into something absolute, Even if this leads to death... sheâll be there, and if she couldnât protect him? If everything fell apart? She didnât have an answer for that but it didnât matter right now, because all that mattered was staying by his side, even if it meant stepping into a battle she was certain they couldnât win..
"Iâm with you too," Sofiaâs voice came from the side, calm but firm, her earlier tension replaced by quiet resolve
Razeal nodded again, "Good," he said, as if everything had fallen exactly into place, as if the path ahead no matter how dangerous, no matter how impossible was already decided.
