After the Dungeon Boss died, the cleanup moved fast. There were already a lot of casualties, so we couldnât afford to waste more time here.
I brought out the two bodies that had been lying on the floor and handed them off to the on-site management staff stationed outside.
âHow are they?â
âLooks like they passed. If theyâre not breathing.â
I was running on empty. Iâd scraped together what little magical power I had left, then spent it, and on top of that Iâd moved two corpses. I cracked open two magical power recovery potions and drank them, then tore open an energy bar from the communal pile and chewed like my life depended on it to satisfy the insane hunger.
Once the urgent cleanup wrapped up, reporters naturally pushed their way in.
âCan you describe what it was like inside the Dungeon?â
âYouâre an SH Hunter, right? Is this your first Gate since your rank correctionâand it was an S-rank Gate?â
âDo you know how Guild Master Song Hwayoung is doing?â
With shutters flashing like crazy in my face, I finished chewing and swallowed the energy bar.
âI was out of my mind too, so. If you go over there, Hunters who are in better shape than me can answer you.â
âYouâre Hunter Seo Jehyun, right?â
âYes.â
The instant I answered, more questions flooded in. I ignored them as needed, opened and ate another energy bar, and only then pushed through the crowd and started walking.
âComing through.â
âUgh, what theâ?â
âDonât shove!â
I went over to So Yeji, whoâd been with Song Hwayoung the whole time, and greeted her.
âHello.â
â...Hello. Youâre Hunter Seo.â
âYes. Want a business card?â
I pulled out my wallet and handed over a card. So Yeji took it with an awkward expression.
âThank you. I donât have one.â
âHonestly, I shouldnât have one either.â
Yeah. Itâs not like there are that many lunatics who walk into a Dungeon carrying a wallet instead of gear. If it hadnât been for Im Haekyung, I wouldâve been stretched out in a warm room right now instead of dealing with thisâso yeah, fuck this.
âWhereâs the Guild Master?â
âI handed her over to the medical unit for now. But... a lot of time passed after she got hurt, so itâs....â
â.......â
âGo check her condition.â
âYes.â
After finishing my light conversation with So Yeji, I moved away from the people still shouting questions and headed somewhere relatively less crowded.
And there, I met a familiar face.
âKwon Taehan.â
Noâcan I even call it a familiar face? I donât know how many times Iâve actually faced him, but as I am right now, isnât this no different from meeting Kwon Taehan for the first time?
Even if I know everything about him.
Meeting someone for the first time while knowing everything about them really did hit different.
How heâd lived, what he pitied, what he feared. What his weaknesses were, how he overcame them. Even the life he would live from here on out.
Of course, I wasnât his acquaintance, and I didnât have some shaman-like ability to see the future. Iâd just read the novel he was in.
It wasnât a novel Iâd read because I wanted to, but with things turning out like this, it was surprisingly pretty fun.
â...Seo Jehyun.â
A voice sunk deep with anger. I knew exactly how I was supposed to react here.
âWho are you?â
***
When I casually asked Kwon Taehan who he was, his answer was pretty intense.
âHe said heâd kill me?â
Itâs not like I did anything wrong inside the Dungeon. Was this rage about the past few lives?
Well, Kwon Taehan had started his fifth life pissed off out of his mind to begin with. It was also the timing where his resentment toward me wouldâve been at its peak.
Even soâbecause I interfered, Song Hwayoung was still clinging to life, wasnât she?
I fastened the shirt button Kwon Taehan had grabbed and got into Im Haekyungâs car. While waiting for Im Haekyung to return, I contacted the people Iâd lost signal with while I was inside the Dungeon, one by one.
âYehyun.â
-Hyung.
The last thing Iâd told Do Yehyun was to stay inside the Dungeon, but the connection wasnât cutting out, so it seemed heâd already gone in and come back out.
âYou been good?â
-...Where are you?
âGood question.... Busan?â
-You told me to take you with me. Iâm... Iâm fine even if you get hurt. But you have to be next to me....
Do Yehyun stopped once mid-sentence, then [N O V E L I G H T] spoke like he was chewing each syllable.
-I can save you, hyung.
âI didnât go in by choice. Im Haekyung shoved me in.â
-Why would they?
âExactly. Want to go scold them for me?â
I shifted my gaze toward the bastard visible beyond the car window.
Thenâclunkâthe door opened, and Im Haekyung slid into the passenger seat.
âJehyun, arenât you a little too naturally parked in my car?â
âHello, Guild Master.â
-Hyung.
Sitting down, Im Haekyung quickly took off their outerwear and tossed it into the back seat, then removed what looked like gearâgloves and a thick belt cinched tight around their waistâone after another and threw them back as well. Loosening the buttons that were fastened up to their neck, Im Haekyung looked my way and asked.
âYouâre on a call?â
âYes.â
âSeowon?â
âYehyun.â
Before I could even finish answering, Do Yehyunâs voiceâpretty damn viciousâstabbed into my ear.
-Youâre next to them?
âYeah. Iâll raise hell on my end first. Letâs meet up when I get back, Yehyun.â
The moment I ended the call, Do Yehyun immediately called again. I simply ignored it and started the car.
âWhat kind of hell are you going to raise on your end?â
âThereâs someone who gets in a bad mood if I go into a Dungeon without bringing them.â
âYehyun? He doesnât seem like that kind of character. Heâs nice.â
âNice people go into Dungeons to get their dopamine fix and shit.â
â.......â
There were quite a few people gathered around the car. I turned the wheel and asked half-assedly,
âIs it okay if it gets scratched up a bit?â
âThe car? Or the people?â
âWhy did you bring the car all the way here?â
âFor my gear. And if I take a train in this situation, every step of my movement gets broadcast, right? And I had something to say to Hunter Tae on the way.â
âWhat?â
âNot to enter the Dungeon. Ahâcan you drive to Seoul right now?â
Could I drive to Seoul in my current condition? I glanced at Im Haekyungâs nonsense once, then looked away.
âFine. Iâll switch with you halfway.â
I laid on the horn mercilessly at the crowd, then threw it into reverse and peeled out of there in one go. Im Haekyung looked at me like they had a lot to say, but in the end they just leaned the seat back without a word.
As soon as we got onto the highway for real, Im Haekyungâs voice came again.
âYou went to see Guild Master Songâs condition?â
âYes.â
âDo you think sheâll be okay?â
âNo.â
At my short answer, Im Haekyung went quiet again for a long while.
âDo you think sheâll die?â
âCould.â
âHer recovery... should be fast.â
âHer magical power is unstable. Her recovery wonât be that smooth.â
On top of that, now that Kwon Taehan had appeared, Song Hwayoung being alive wasnât exactly a good sign if the Dungeon was going to maintain that so-called plausibility. With a strange feeling, I glanced down at the hand gripping the steering wheel.
I remembered the pain from when Iâd pressed on her bleeding wound to stop it for a moment.
âIt went against plausibility.â
This wasnât even comparable to tossing out a few spoilers. It was a massive plausibility deviation. Had I wanted to break it?
âWhat about the other Hunters?â
âBoth Haeseong Hunters are fine. One has internal injuries and will probably need treatment. The Hunter from Damyeon... doesnât look so good. Among the ones still alive.â
âDamyeonâs Guild Master didnât come as support, right?â
âNo. Because I went.â
I nodded at Im Haekyungâs words. Im Haekyung checked my reaction briefly, then suddenly asked something else.
âThat Hunter who came as support earlierâdid you recognize them?â
âNo.â
âYou both acted like you knew each other....â
âMe?â
âBoth of you.â
Kwon Taehan acted like he knew me? Well, he grabbed someone by the collar out of nowhere at the scene, so anyone who saw wouldâve seen. Instead of giving some proper reaction, I just shrugged slightly.
âThat Hunter is S-rank.â
While we were speeding down the highway, Im Haekyung suddenly threw out another random line.
âWho?â
âThe Hunter who came as support earlier. I donât know their face... and if theyâre that strong, they mustâve awakened recently....â
â.......â
âItâs going to get loud.â
That last part was almost a mutter to themself.
An S-rank Dungeon that appeared out of nowhere, and an S-rank Hunter who also appeared out of nowhere. Excluding the other injured... and the dead, those two issues alone were enough to set public opinion on fire for a while.
And after that day, public opinion really was loud.
Just... not in the way Iâd expected.
