Wenren Suo looked at the young man sitting on the other meditation cushion nearby, his expression clearly unhappy.
âGrandpa, why did you let him come here?â he asked.
âTianming had some questions about martial arts and came to ask me. Whatâs wrong with that?â Wenren Jingshi replied calmly.
âThere are so many instructors in the manor. Why didnât he ask them? Why does he have to come to you?â Wenren Suo said with dissatisfaction.
âI think he just wants to show off in front of you.â
âEnough,â Wenren Jingshi snorted coldly. âI know what Iâm doing with Tianming. His cultivation issues canât be solved by just anyone. Youâre all part of the same clan. You need to learn to get along. If anyone dares start in-fighting, I wonât show mercy. This kind of precedent cannot be set!â
Hearing this, Wenren Suo pouted but didnât argue further.
Grandpaâs words were absolute law in the Wenren Clan. He also knew his grandfather was very strict about certain matters.
Xu Zimo glanced at the youth named Wenren Tianming. He hadnât spoken a word this entire time and hadnât even looked at Wenren Suo, as if completely ignoring him.
In his past life, Xu Zimo hadnât paid much attention to his motherâs side of the Clan, so he didnât know much about them.
âMomo, since youâre here, enjoy your time,â Wenren Jingshi turned and smiled at Xu Zimo.
âWeâre all Clan, so I wonât say much. If anything comes up, talk to your cousin Suo. If youâre still unhappy, come straight to Grandpa.â
Xu Zimo nodded.
Seeing Wenren Suo still looking like he wanted to say something, he quickly pulled him out of the room.
After they left the Serenity Pavilion, Wenren Suo still seemed upset.
âCousin, whyâd you stop me just now? That Wenren Tianming is just a branch descendant. Does Grandpa really think heâs more important than his own grandson?â
âCut the nonsense. Just tell me, whatâs the deal with this Wenren Tianming?â Xu Zimo asked.
âWhat else? Heâs from a side branch but has good talent, so Grandpa kept him close,â Wenren Suo said with frustration.
âWhatâs that got to do with you? You act like you two are sworn enemies,â Xu Zimo laughed.
âNot enemies⊠I just canât stand the guy,â Wenren Suo muttered.
Xu Zimo smiled, seeing through him. There was clearly a grudge there, but since Wenren Suo didnât want to explain, Xu Zimo didnât push it.
...
Wenren Suoâs residence had several rooms. He arranged for Xu Zimo to stay next door.
The courtyard was large, surrounded by lush trees that blocked off the outer wall from view.
Several rare spirit trees grew within the courtyard.
After preparing the room, Wenren Suo grinned mischievously and said, âCousin, Iâll take you to a nice place. Youâve finally made it to Phoenix Wing City. I canât let you leave without having some fun.â
Xu Zimo nodded. He had nothing else to do anyway, so he didnât mind.
The two left the Wenren residence and headed north along the main street of the eastern district. Phoenix Wing City truly lived up to its name as one of the great cities of the Northern Continent.
Never mind the size, the prosperity alone surpassed most other cities.
After walking for about ten minutes, they reached a large plaza.
Flowers and fountains decorated its perimeter, and in the center stood a statue.
The statue was of a man, carved with striking realism.
At a glance, he appeared to shoulder the heavens, with an awe-inspiring presence like the sea.
He wore a purple robe, and his eyes were piercing. Even as a statue, one could feel as though he saw through your soul.
People passed by from time to time, bowing to the statue with respect and reverence.
âWho is that?â Xu Zimo asked curiously.
Wenren Suo was silent for a moment, then answered, âThe Heaven Prison Emperor, the founder of the Wan Clan.â
Xu Zimo had heard of him. He was an ancient emperor who bore the Heavenâs Will even earlier than Grand Emperor San Dao.
Though the Wan Clan was an imperial lineage, their Grand Emperor had appeared long ago, and in recent generations, their descendants lacked strength.
No new emperor had risen, and the lineage had declined.
Otherwise, even the Wenren Clan wouldnât dare confront them directly.
It was said the founding of the Phoenix Perch Empire owed much to the Wan Clan.
Thatâs why statues of the Heaven Prison Emperor were erected in all four corners of Phoenix Wing City.
Xu Zimo looked at the statue deeply, then continued walking with Wenren Suo.
They passed through several narrow alleys and eventually came to a quiet street.
Shops lined both sides, but the area felt out of place with the rest of the bustling city.
âThis is Heaven-Jade Street,â Wenren Suo explained with a smile, seeing Xu Zimoâs confused look.
âThe shops here sell high-end goods. Ordinary people canât afford them, which is why itâs so quiet. Basically, itâs a street for the wealthy.â
âThen why bring me here?â Xu Zimo asked.
âJust follow me,â Wenren Suo laughed slyly and headed down the street.
Xu Zimo followed, glancing at the shops. They sold all kinds of rare goods, elixirs, weapons, even secret techniques and manuals.
Judging from the decoration alone, these were all top-tier items.
When they reached the middle of the street, Wenren Suo stopped.
He tilted his head toward a nearby pavilion.
Xu Zimo looked over and saw the sign that read âFeather Porch Pavilion.â
The calligraphy was graceful and elegant, evoking a sense of floating mist.
âWhatâs this place?â Xu Zimo asked.
âWhat do you think?â Wenren Suo grinned, giving that classic look every man understands.
âThis isnât a brothel, is it?â Xu Zimo asked, speechless.
âCan you not make it sound so vulgar?â Wenren Suo replied. âPeople have emotions and desires, itâs normal. Donât act all saintly with me.â
âIâm really not into that,â Xu Zimo said, shaking his head.
âWhat do you mean âthatâ? This is just a relaxed place to enjoy music and food. Donât overthink it,â Wenren Suo threw his arm around Xu Zimoâs shoulder and dragged him inside.
He added with a sly smile, âBut if you do have other needs, theyâll take care of them too.â
Xu Zimo glared at him but didnât argue.
âYou got money?â Wenren Suo asked.
Xu Zimo looked at him in disbelief and said, âDonât tell me the great young master of the Wenren clan doesnât even have money for a meal.
And Iâm the guest, should I really be treating you?â
âFamilyâs strict,â Wenren Suo chuckled. âNext time itâs on me. I promise.â
The two laughed and walked into Feather Porch Pavilion together.
