Hong Jin saw Chen Changsheng walk into the night, and she secretly sighed with relief.
When she looked up, she saw Yun Xiang still staring at the corner of the alley, even though Chen Changshengâs figure was gone; she kept staring.
Hong Jin said, âHe left, are you still looking?â
Yun Xiang came to her senses and pulled her gaze from the corner of the alley.
She held Hong Jinâs hand and said, âLetâs go backâŠâ
Hong Jin looked at her and asked, âDo you like him?â
Yun Xiang paused at those words, she shook her head, but gave no explanation.
âNot like?â Hong Jin asked.
Yun Xiang thought about it; she wasnât sure what she really felt about Mr. Chen, but it was definitely different from ordinary liking.
She touched Hong Jinâs head and said, âWhatâs a child asking these things for?â
Hong Jin narrowed her eyes and just stared at Yun Xiang, but did not argue back.
Yun Xiang held her hand and led her back to Tang Manor.
Hong Jin loved good wine; she thought she wouldnât drink today, but unexpectedly, after returning, Miss Yun got very drunk, and Hong Jin managed to get a few fine sips of wine.
The drunk Yun Xiang didnât say a word, she just slept on the stone table.
Hong Jin wondered, muttering to herself: âDrunk and not speaking at allâŠâ
âHow can someone be this quiet.â
She shook her head and looked at the wine on the table; what was left was naturally hers to finish.
âŠ
Chen Changsheng used Sword Flight to head back. He told Fox Sovereign it would take one day, but he got delayed.
He looked back at the huge lotus pond outside Lotus Root Lane, thinking he would visit again someday; the pond never got old.
Donât miss it, donât think about it; since fate couldnât be broken, it ended here. It wasnât perfect, but it left some thoughts behind.
Chen Changsheng took a big mouthful from the wine gourd, wine spilling from the corner of his mouth under the bright moon.
It was like the meaning of âfree and easyâ felt incomplete.
âWhy think so muchâŠâ
Chen Changsheng sighed, shook his head, and used Sword Flight to head back to Autumn Moon Market.
As he flew forward, his gaze suddenly shifted, and he saw behind him from the corner of his eye.
âHuh?â
Chen Changsheng smiled and said, âThe courage is truly bold.â
He just pretended he hadnât noticed and returned to Flowing Cloud Temple outside Autumn Moon Market.
The night was misty, with thin fog rising from the mountain.
The sounds of insects and birds in the mountain were gone now, messed up by Moyuan and Su Junhan, so it was strangely quiet.
Chen Changsheng pushed the door open and instantly heard the True Dragon and Fox Sovereign arguing loudly by the stone table.
When they saw Mr. Chen return, they fell silent immediately.
Moyuan glared at Su Junhan and said, âMr. Chen is back, Iâll argue with you later!â
Su Junhan glanced at him icily, not bothering with him at all.
Su Junhan went to greet Mr. Chen and said, âDid Mr. Chen find what he wanted?â
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and said, âGot to crash a wedding feast, does that count?â
âIt must have been exciting.â
âIt was indeed.â
Chen Changsheng nodded, then said, âIs Fox Sovereign in a rush? How about we start for Yuan Mountain after tonight?â
âNo rush.â
Su Junhan smiled and said, âThe trip might be tiring, Mr. Chen should rest.â
After a few words, Chen Changsheng went to the Library Pavilion.
Su Junhan lowered his hand and turned to look at Moyuan.
Moyuan rolled his eyes and said, âPretending to be nice and acting noble, you think Mr. Chen canât see your real self?â
Su Junhan said, âHumans and monsters both have two sides, because the world hates the word âtruthâ.â
Moyuan frowned and said, âIâm âtrueâ, and the world hasnât shut me out.â
âReally?â Su Junhan smiled knowingly.
Moyuan thought again and said, âOkay, not all âtrueâ, but if it were ten parts, Iâm at least nine. You, Su Junhan, arenât even half.â
âYouâre too kind.â
âThat wasnât a compliment.â
âWhat matters is that my feelings seem more important.â
Moyuan paused; whenever Su Junhan talked like this, it annoyed him.
He shook his head and couldnât explain it, âNot arguing with you.â
Su Junhan nodded; he wanted to rest too.
But soon after they sat down, an aura appeared at the foot of the mountain.
Moyuan and Su Junhan exchanged a look, then turned their eyes to the temple door.
Su Junhan said, âThis late, and thereâs still a visitor.â
âNot holding stillâŠâ
Moyuan sighed and said, âMaybe here to see Mr. Chen?â
âLetâs go check outside,â Su Junhan said.
The two âDoor Godsâ went to the temple gate and gazed down the stairs.
The one climbing the mountain wasnât human; it was a monster.
This monster wore white clothes and looked neat, but its aura was shaky, like it was still hurt from a big injury.
It had followed Chen Changsheng all the way here. Before, it got hit by a Thunder Technique. If not for a Talisman, it would have died in Western Xiao.
The white-clad monster knew it was weak but still followed.
When it came into view, Moyuan and Su Junhan saw two pairs of horns hidden on its back.
Moyuan frowned and whispered, âWhatâs this monster?â
âHorns like a deer, mounted on the backâŠâ
Su Junhan had seen more; a green light flashed in his eyes, and he recognized the climbing monster.
âItâs a ChenghuangâŠâ
Su Junhan looked at the monster and frowned: âI thought they were all gone.â
âAll gone? What do you mean?â Moyuan asked.
Su Junhan answered: âWay back in Ancient Times, the world had monsters called Chenghuang. Stories say they look like foxes with horns on their backs; riding them adds two thousand years to your life.â
Moyuan didnât believe it: âThat sounds fake.â
âAdding two thousand years is indeed fake.â
Su Junhan explained: âI saw in the Fox Clan records that riding does add life: a mortal gains one sexagenary cycle; a weak Cultivator also gains years, but the Chenghuang loses some of its demonic power and lifespan too.â
âBecause of that, mortals and Cultivators hunted Chenghuang everywhere for longer lives. After just seven sexagenary cycles, Chenghuang were no more than stories.â
Moyuan scowled: âWiped out?â
Su Junhan nodded: âMany beasts from Ancient Times died out this way.â
Moyuan opened his mouth but couldnât find words.
The Chenghuang walked up the stairs; its gaze met the two monsters at the gate.
Just the sight made it hard to breathe.
It wanted to run away but still took a step up.
âYou twoâŠâ The Chenghuang stuttered, sweating inside.
âLooking for Mr. Chen?â Moyuan asked.
The Chenghuang recalled and nodded: âThe master who just went into the temple, I need⊠his help.â
The Chenghuang felt the huge demonic power of the pair and got scared.
âDare I ask who you Demon Kings areâŠ?â
Moyuan said calmly: âBibo Lake, Moyuan.â
Su Junhan spoke: âYuan Mountain, Su Junhan.â
Chenghuang froze, thinking over the names. Suddenly, it shook.
Could it beâŠ
Its legs began to tremble, and sweat dripped from its forehead.
Moyuan smiled lightly: âSeems youâve heard of us.â
The words confirmed it.
Shivering, Chenghuang said: âSmall monster⊠afraid! Sorry I didnât know it was True Dragon and Fox Sovereign!â
Moyuan waved it off: âNo need for that.â
Chenghuang gasped and asked softly: âWhy⊠are you two here?â
Moyuan thought and replied:
âGuarding the door.â
