Du Aâniang never expected Chen Changsheng to come back.
It had been a year since he left. Sheâd long thought he died in the Demon Realm.
She filled his Wine Gourd with Demon Gall Wine, then brought another pot.
The two of them sat chatting in the empty tavern.
âI heard from Woodcutter, that sword move on that day⊠was it from the sword?â she asked.
âWhat day?â Chen Changsheng asked.
âThe day you left,â Du Aâniang said.
âYes,â he replied.
âIt really was!â
Du Aâniang looked astonished. âNo wonder Woodcutter always calls you Senior!â
Chen Changsheng laughed helplessly. âWhy would I look like a Senior?â
Du Aâniang said, âWell, thereâs a saying: the more skilled someone is, the simpler they look.â
âIs that soâŠâ
Chen Changsheng chatted with her off and on. Du Aâniang wasnât shouting and cursing in front of him, probably because they werenât that close yet, still a bit awkward.
Du Aâniang suddenly spoke again. âHey, why donât you teach me?â
Chen Changsheng paused. âTeach what?â
âThat sword move.â
Du Aâniang continued, âIâve actually always wanted to learn something. Look around this city â Iâm the only one who knows nothing. Woodcutter wonât let me learn, the others donât dare teach me. They all just say, let me run the tavern properly. None of them have brains in their heads!â
Chen Changsheng chuckled. âThe Divine Domain canât do without you. After learning the sword, do you want to leave the city and kill demons?â
Du Aâniang narrowed her eyes, smiling. âJust a tiny bit will do.â
Chen Changsheng suddenly felt interested. He put down the wine pot and casually picked up a chopstick.
âLook.â
Du Aâniangâs gaze fixed on Chen Changshengâs hand.
Chen Changsheng held the chopstick between his fingers, then raised his hand and gave a slight chop.
A fine strand of Sword Qi shot out, nicking a small groove into the corner of the table.
Du Aâniang looked at the little groove. âAh!â she exclaimed. âIt is different from Woodcutterâs!â
She turned to Chen Changsheng. âTeach me? I wonât charge you.â
Chen Changsheng smiled. âIâve already taught you.â
Du Aâniang paused. âAlready taught me?â
Chen Changsheng nodded.
Du Aâniang said, âBut I havenât learned it yet! So, that doesnât count as teaching. No, no, I have to charge you!â
Chen Changsheng smiled. âFine.â
Just as they were talking, a shout came from outside.
âOld widow! More wine!â
Du Aâniangâs expression changed instantly upon hearing the voice.
She put her hands on her hips and yelled towards the door. âWoodcutter! Your ancestors for eight generations! Canât you see Iâm busy?!?â
ââŠâŠâ
Chen Changsheng was both amused and exasperated. A womanâs mood sure changes fast, he thought to himself.
Song Gudao walked in. âHa! What could you possibly be busyâŠ?â
He suddenly froze when he saw the figure sitting with its back to him at the table.
âŠâŠ
Du Aâniang brought them two plates of snacks to go with the drinks, then went and sat at a nearby table to study the sword groove.
Chen Changsheng and Song Gudao sat facing each other.
When Chen Changsheng left, it was Huai Xu. Now, in the blink of an eye, it was Huai Xu once again.
âItâs been a year, Elder Chen. Have you been well?â Song Gudao asked.
Chen Changsheng replied, âWell enough. Saw quite a lot of sights in the Demon Realm.â
âTruly different,â Song Gudao said with a laugh. âSomeone like me enters the Demon Realm at great risk, yet Senior can come and go freely.â
Chen Changsheng offered a slight smile and moved on. âI take it nothing much happened outside the city walls this year?â
Song Gudao nodded. âExactly. No demons came. Standing guard on the wall day after day, weâve all got really bored!â
âIsnât that good? Should you hope for a fight?â Chen Changsheng asked.
Song Gudao sighed heavily. âPeace is definitely best.â
Their talk was mostly polite chit-chat. Song Gudao couldnât recall many interesting events; the Divine Domain was a boring place, extremely so.
After a slightly awkward silence fell between them.
Song Gudao spoke up again. âBy the way, Elder Chen⊠do you know how Gouâer is faring these days?â
Chen Changsheng said, âHimâŠâ
Seeing Chen Changsheng hesitate, Song Gudao pressed, âHas something happened to him?â
âNo, not exactly.â
Chen Changsheng continued, âHeâs not dead. Not only is he alive, heâs actually entered the Thirty-Six Caves.â
Song Gudao visibly froze. âThat quickly!?â
Chen Changsheng nodded. âHe had an unusual opportunity.â
Song Gudao smiled. âThat puts my mind at ease.â
Chen Changsheng looked at him. âYouâre scared that if he died, youâd have another regret weighing on your heart.â
Song Gudao waved a hand dismissively but didnât answer.
Chen Changsheng had indeed hit the nail on the head.
But Chen Changsheng didnât tell him how Gouâer had managed to enter the Thirty-Six Caves. In Chen Changshengâs view, Song Gudao might not truly want to know what happened.
The thing is, regrets piling up inside a person⊠sooner or later, it makes them sick.
Donât let Song Gudaoâs daily bickering with Du Aâniang fool you â he was already dangerously ill inside.
Song Gudao then turned to asking about the Demon Realm.
Chen Changsheng said, âGreat changes have happened in the Demon Realm. For the next few years, they likely wonât trouble the Divine Domain again.â
Song Gudao was stunned. âGreat changes? What kind?â
Chen Changsheng replied, âIf a battle was fought right here, outside this city, with both sides going all out⊠your chances of winning are very high.â
Song Gudao visibly swayed in his seat.
His breathing became noticeably heavier.
But then he seemed to suddenly calm down, frowning in thought.
After a moment of silence.
Song Gudao lifted his head. âBut if we charged into the Demon Realm⊠the outcome would be different, right?â
Chen Changsheng nodded. âThe Demon Realmâs terrain is complex. The Thirty-Six Caves are especially easy to defend but hard to attack. With only several hundred men, entering the Demon Realm would mean facing tens of thousands of demons. You might be able to defeat an Eighth-Realm Great Demon. But if just thousands, even at the Fourth or Fifth Realm, swarmed you⊠even if you alone could kill a thousand, youâd still get exhausted and die in the end.â
After grasping this, Song Gudao let out a long, relieved breath.
He smiled wryly. âEven if the chance came⊠itâs useless⊠sighâŠâ
âYou need to wait,â Chen Changsheng said.
Song Gudao agreed, nodding. âMissing just one chance, one opportunity⊠though I wish that chance would come soon.â
Chen Changsheng suddenly looked directly at him.
Song Gudao met his gaze. A faint, strange smile suddenly appeared on his face.
Chen Changsheng said, âSome things⊠one shouldnât gamble on.â
Song Gudao just nodded slightly. It didnât seem heâd really heeded Chen Changshengâs words.
This drinking session didnât last much longer. Chen Changsheng didnât stay in the Divine Domain. But he didnât return to the Demon Realm either. He thought about wandering the Mortal World instead.
The tavern grew quiet once more.
Du Aâniang was unusually silent today. She kept staring intently at the sword groove on the table, as if she could see something within it.
Song Gudao asked, âWhat are you staring at, old widow?â
âLearning the sword,â Du Aâniang replied.
Song Gudao glanced at the sword groove on the table and understood instantly.
âYou?â Song Gudao scoffed.
âLooking down on me?â Du Aâniang retorted. âWoodcutter, just wait until I learn it! The first thing Iâll do is chop you up!â
Song Gudao burst out laughing.
âYou could stare at it for eight hundred years and still learn nothing.â
Worn out from trading barbs with her, Song Gudao found a seat and started drinking on his own.
As he drank, the topic of the Demon Realm resurfaced in his mind.
âOne chanceâŠâ
He seemed to be contemplating a plan, but hesitated, unable to decide.
