Tong Zhihuan stayed at home, while Miss Taoâer was escorted back to the Flowing Cloud Temple by the two elderly folks.
This was the older generationâs custom. Since the wedding date was set, the two couldnât meet until the big day itself.
That very afternoon, Tong Caizheng went to invite a matchmaker, set the date, inquired about the necessary families, and wrote out invitation cards. All who should be invited were included.
News of Tong Zhihuanâs wedding spread among the people of Autumn Moon Market within days, even reaching neighboring districts and towns.
âPhysician Tongâs getting married!â
âOh my, I must go!â
âDad, didnât Physician Tong marry long ago?â
âItâs his son, Little Miracle Doctor Tong. Donât you remember? When you were little, you had a serious illness. Doctors from all over couldnât help. Little Miracle Doctor Tong was the one who finally cured you. Otherwise, youâd have lost your life.â
âI remember now!â
âWe should go then.â
âBut we havenât received an invitation. Wouldnât it be rude to just show up?â
âJust leave a gift. We wonât impose.â
âAlright, that sounds fine.â
âŠ
When Moyuan saw Miss Taoâer return, he was overjoyed. Before, he could only chat with Zhang Xiaoliu now and then, but that became dull over time.
Now, at last, he had someone to relieve his boredom.
As soon as Taoâer returned to the temple, Moyuanâs mouth didnât stop moving.
Taoâer rubbed her forehead helplessly. âAfter so many years, how are you still this talkative?â
Moyuan grinned. âHeh, all of you went out to have fun, leaving me stuck here guarding the temple. Itâs boring! Anyone I catch now will have to do.â
Chenghuang descended from the rooftop.
Having just ended his meditation retreat, he saw a guest in the temple.
Taoâer looked at Chenghuang. âThis isâŠâ
âMy little brother,â Moyuan said. âHe was taken in by Mr. Chen and cultivates here.â
Moyuan then introduced Taoâer to Chenghuang. âThis is Miss Taoâer. The peach tree in the courtyard once held her true form.â
Understanding dawned on Chenghuang. It seemed Miss Taoâer arrived long before him.
Chenghuang clasped his hands respectfully. âChenghuang pays his respects to Senior Taoâer.â
âNo, no.â Taoâer waved her hands quickly. âIâm not a senior. I just sweep the yard.â
Chenghuang froze, thoroughly confused.
Moyuan said, âJust call her Miss Taoâer.â
He then asked about Tong Zhihuan. âWhereâs the kid? Didnât he come back with you?â
Only then did Taoâer explain why sheâd returned to the temple alone.
Moyuan reacted with utter shock.
âWhat?!â
Moyuan shot to his feet. âYou two are getting married?!â
Miss Taoâer nodded. âNext month, on the second day.â
âGoodnessâŠâ Moyuan smacked his lips and shook his head. âNo way, you twoâŠâ
Miss Taoâer teased him. âFollowing the mortal customs, you folks will count as my family now.â
Moyuan opened his mouth, then sat back down.
âDo his parents know?â Moyuan asked.
Miss Taoâer shook her head. âNot yet. Zhihuan didnât want me to tell them. He doesnât want them to worry.â
Moyuan nodded. âThatâs wise. Best they donât know.â
Taoâer sighed. âMy only worry now is the ceremony itself. The vow-paying during the weddingâŠâ
âWhatâs there toâŠâ Moyuan began but then paused. He pondered a moment. âAh, right. According to mortal wedding rites, you must pay homage to Heaven and Earth. Doing that might anger themâŠâ
âExactly.â
Taoâer exhaled slowly. âBut I hope itâll be fine. Heaven and Earth surely wonât hold it against a small monster like me.â
Chenghuang looked puzzled. âWhy would paying homage anger the Heavenly Dao?â
Moyuan answered, âSheâs marrying.â
âI know that,â Chenghuang blinked, still confused.
âSimpleton,â Moyuan said. âMarrying a human, understand? Sheâs a monster!â
Chenghuangâs pupils shrank. He froze, then his gaze towards Miss Taoâer changed completely.
Moyuan explained, âThis brother of mine has always been a bit slow on the uptake.â
Taoâer couldnât help laughing. âHeâs quite the opposite of you.â
Chenghuang spoke up, âWhat Miss Taoâer mentionedâŠ. she should probably take seriously. I once saw a marriage between a human and a monster myself. On the day they bowed to Heaven and Earth, thunder crackled outside. A thread of Heavenly Daoâs Misfortune fell upon them. Within a year, the mortal woman passed away tragically.â
Miss Taoâer gasped. âIs that true?â
Chenghuang nodded gravely. âThings like that⊠Iâve seen more than once.â
Miss Taoâer frowned. âIf thatâs the case, am I not bringing harm to him?â
Moyuan thought for a moment, then suddenly brightened up, slapping his thigh. âItâs simple then!â
âWeâll just ask Mr. Chen to preside over the wedding!â
Taoâer snapped out of her thoughts. âIf itâs Mr. ChenâŠâ
Perhaps⊠it really could work.
Chenghuang, however, seemed obtuse. âExactly how profound is Mr. Chenâs cultivation?â
Moyuan looked at him and chuckled. âEven Heaven and Earth grant Mr. Chen some respect. For a single marriage? Should be easy enough.â
Chenghuang stared blankly. He just couldnât reconcile Moyuanâs words with that calm, gentle Mr. Chen he knew.
âŠ
Tang Manor, Yan County.
âGloop gloopâŠâ
Bubbles rose continuously in the water vat. A red fish swam happily within.
A young woman in green robes walked down the covered corridor.
She carried an invitation card to the vat and observed the motionless red fish at the bottom.
Yun Xiang lifted an eyebrow. âYu Hongjin!â
The red fish startled awake at the bottom.
âPlop!â With a splash, the red fish leaped out, transforming into a little girl in red robes.
âIâm here!â Yu Hongjin wobbled, taking half a moment to steady herself.
Yun Xiang scolded her. âHave you been stealing wine again?â
âI havenât!â
Yu Hongjin puffed out her round little belly. As she spoke, she burped.
The pungent smell of alcohol filled the air.
Yun Xiang sighed, rubbing her forehead. âLook at you. What little girl behaves like this? No proper little girl is a drunkard like you!â
Yu Hongjin blinked. âSister Yun, Iâm not a little girl. Iâm a monster!â
Yun Xiang didnât know whether to laugh or cry. She continued, âNext month, on the second day. Miss Taoâer of the Flowing Cloud Temple is getting married. She invited us for the wedding wine.â
âWhoâs Miss Taoâer?â
âFlowing Cloud Temple⊠hmm⊠does that have anything to do with Mr. Chen?â Yu Hongjin rattled off before adding, âSister Yun, are you really just going for the wine?â
Yun Xiangâs face instantly flushed red.
âWhat are you talking about!â
Yu Hongjin giggled slyly. âI knew it! Sister Yun just wants to see her old flame.â
Yun Xiang stiffened. âWho taught you things like that?â
Yu Hongjin planted her hands on her hips. âSister Yun, I am NOT a little girl!!â
Yun Xiang covered her mouth, laughing. âFine, youâre a big girl then. Alright?â
âAhh, Iâm not! Iâm a GREAT DEMON!â
âMore like a big drunkard.â
