Chen Changsheng and Ying Tianze left the wine tavern together.
Only the drunken manager was left at the table, along with an empty wine jar and the skeleton of a red tilapia someone had eaten clean.
The manager, who once dreamed of distant places in his youth, fell into another Great Dream. But this time, instead of wandering lands far away,
He saw peach blossoms falling in a little courtyard, with his wife and child beside him. His life felt round and full.
âŠ
Before them stretched the majestic Tongtian River.
A riverside breeze tugged at the strands of hair by Chen Changshengâs temples. He gazed out. Compared to the last time he saw it, the Tongtian River seemed strangely quieter now.
Ying Tianze stood beside him and asked, âI heard of Cultivators who train within the Mortal World. Seeking self-understanding to grasp the Great Dao. Is that your path?â
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment, then shook his head. âI walk the Mortal World sometimes, often not. I merely enjoy its bustle. It isnât for my Cultivation.â
Ying Tianze gave a slight nod. âIndeed different from ordinary Cultivators. Shows my eye is sharp as ever.â
âOne shouldnât boast like that,â Chen Changsheng chuckled.
Ying Tianze grinned back. âThatâs just how I am.â
âFree-spirited is good,â Chen Changsheng said.
Ying Tianze shook his head. âNot good.â
âFreedom makes deep understanding hard. True insight needs understanding, training, and method â all three. I was too loose for too long. Let my younger brothers catch up.â
Chen Changsheng said, âSo, you are the eldest?â
Ying Tianze glanced at him. âYou knew already. Why ask?â
âI really didnât know,â Chen Changsheng laughed.
Ying Tianze rolled his eyes. âYou. You knew and pretended not to. Anyone can see you overthink things.â
Chen Changsheng replied, âIf I truly overthought things, I wouldnât have said that.â
Ying Tianze considered this. âHmm. That⊠actually makes some sense.â
He shook his head, dropping the thought, and asked instead, âHave you heard of the River and Sea Grand Banquet?â
Chen Changsheng thought for a bit. âVaguely. Water Demons from everywhere came to the Dragon Palace today. Is that it?â
âExactly.â
Ying Tianze said, âAre you afraid? If not, I could take you. Might be fun.â
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng smiled faintly. âI rather would like to see it.â
âGood!â
Ying Tianze laughed, a hint of relief in his voice. âDonât worry. Iâll keep you safe.â
Chen Changsheng rubbed his chin. âPerhaps⊠that wonât be necessary.â
Ying Tianze blinked, then chuckled. âYou underestimate it. These Water Demons have all kinds of temperaments. Thereâs always a few troublemakers. Youâre human. Stirring trouble could be hard to shake off.â
âReally?â
Chen Changsheng blinked slowly. He thought it unlikely anyone would be foolish enough to bother him.
Ying Tianze urged, âWe must hurry. The feast will start soon.â
âFollow me.â
âGladly.â
Chen Changsheng followed Ying Tianze into the waters of the Tongtian River.
Trailing behind, he wondered if Ying Tianze truly didnât know who he was, or if it was an act.
Though⊠this one was surely him. The Eldest Prince.
Hard to believe the Old Dragon King had such a son. So different. Reserved, quiet⊠surprisingly without temper.
The two arrived at the riverbed.
The sounds of gongs and drums reached them well before the Dragon Palace came into view.
Ying Tianze muttered, âNuts. Weâre late. Wonât get in the front gate now.â
âWhat then?â Chen Changsheng asked.
âJust follow me.â
Ying Tianze declared, âGrew up here. Know a few secret ways.â
Ying Tianze led Chen Changsheng through a dense coral grove. There, a tiny opening forced them to cast small Arcane Spells, turning into small fish to slip through.
Weaving through many twists and turns, they finally entered the Dragon Palace.
They had snuck in.
Chen Changsheng recalled the twisting path. If I ever needed to sneak back to steal treasuresâŠ
This Ying Tianze is rather naive.
Once inside, Ying Tianze pointed. âThis is the Dragon Palace Coral Garden. Stick close. We sneak into the banquet.â
âAlright.â
It had to be said. Ying Tianze truly held little status within the Dragon Palace.
The Second Prince Yingyuan, years prior, gained enlightenment on the Dragon Heart thanks to guidance from an Immortal. The Dragon Princess began overseeing the worship rites of the Tongtian River. Now, she was the Goddess of Tianjiang, her Dragon Ascension drawing near.
Though Ying Tianze was the eldest Dragon Prince, beside the Second Prince and the Dragon Princess, he faded into the background.
Ying Tianze didnât head for the main seats. Instead, he found the most obscure corner among the many feast tables and settled in.
Chen Changsheng asked, âArenât you a prince? Why sit among the guests?â
Ying Tianze took a swig of wine. âYou wouldnât get it. Sitting inside? Iâd face endless mockery today. Father compares me endlessly to Second Brother and Third Sister. Canât win? Then I avoid.â
Chen Changsheng smiled. âYou reign as the crown prince is rather lowly.â
âSee? You did know,â Ying Tianze retorted.
Chen Changsheng glanced at the surrounding Water Demons. âSitting here⊠arenât you afraid theyâll recognize you?â
Ying Tianze waved dismissively. âNo. Few have seen me. Most donât even know the Dragon Palace has an Eldest Prince.â
He looked at Chen Changsheng. âWhy stand idle? This spread shouldnât go to waste. Iâm bored of it, but you might find it new.â
Chen Changsheng looked at the table. âThen I wonât hold back.â
He truly meant it.
He ate whatever was there. The wine flowed freely, cup after cup, without pause.
âŠ
Inside the Dragon Palace main hall.
The Old Dragon King sat stern on his crystal throne. His gaze swept the room. He raised a hand. âRare gathering tonight. I wonât speak long. Eat well! Drink well! We can catch up properly later.â
âDragon Lord, please!â the guests chorused.
âLetâs feast.â
This table hosted the most renowned Great Demons. To the Old Dragon Kingâs left sat the Second Prince, Yingyuan, and the Dragon Princess, Ying Youen.
Other familiar faces were present.
Moyuan was also at the table, with Taoâer beside him. On his other side sat a man whose expression was surprisingly gentle.
âHow did you get here?â Moyuan asked, slightly incredulous.
Hu Junhan looked back calmly. âI couldnât come?â
Moyuan opened his mouth to speak.
Hu Junhan cut in smoothly. âWant to say enemies often cross paths?â
âYou stole my line!â Moyuan blinked.
Hu Junhan offered a serene smile and ignored him.
Predictable. The guy never held back a barb.
Moyuan gave a light snort, feigning indifference. He turned and said, dripping with sarcasm, âHuh? Years without seeing you⊠seems you havenât grown much.â
Hu Junhan softly snorted. âHave you?â
Moyuan deliberately conjured a wisp of Samadhi True Flame, flaunting it lightly.
âHmph. Not bad,â Hu Junhan conceded. âSo⊠you think you can take me now?â
Moyuan coughed lightly, staying silent.
Hu Junhan spoke calmly. âBefore, you couldnât beat me. Now? Still canât. Meaning, no growth worth the name. So?â
âOf course there is.â
âI think not.â
ââŠâŠâ
Moyuan waved a hand impatiently. âAhhh, forget it. Not talking to you.â
âJust outwitted.â
